The shower, I find, is the best place to cry. The water covers the sound of my sadness, while washing away any evidence of my pain. I shower after the kids have gone to bed; it's the only time I can be alone.
I always did my best to protect my two children from my tears. If I needed to cry, I cried by myself. Yet, I encourage my two boys to cry. My 7-year-old prides himself on never crying at school. "Oh, but you must cry," I insist, "Crying is good. It gets the sadness out. Never hold back your tears."
But then I did just that. What might it do to them to see their mother upset? Then my father died, and there was no way I could schedule my grief and keep my feelings inside. I tried to get on with things, but the sadness still came. The realization that my dad was actually gone hit me with an intensity(紧张) that was impossible to cover up. To my surprise, my boys didn't seem too alarmed. Later, they found me hiding in the bedroom one afternoon, weeping. "It's OK, mommies get sad too," I told them, smiling through my tears. "Don't be sad, Mommy. Granddad is coming back as a baby," my 7-year-old said, his tiny arm stretched across my shoulders. "Think about love," he went on. "Think about all the people who love you."
I realized that in hiding my pain, I was only denying what it means to be human. I felt as if I had led my sons to believe that "negative" emotions are only a concept, and not something they should possess. It's one thing to tell my children it's OK to cry. It's another to show them how it's done. We owe that to our children, according to social researcher and author Brene Brown. During her TED talk, Brown said, "It's necessary we let ourselves be seen—deeply seen."
"Our job is not to protect our children, to keep them perfect," said Brown, "Our job is to look and say, 'you're imperfect, and you're made for struggles, but you are worthy of love and belonging'."

22、SAN FRANCISCO(AP)-Samsung says new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones will be available in U.S. stones starting Wednesday to replace about 1 million devices that are being recalled because their batteries can catch fire. The South Korean company has been scrambling to fix problems caused by faulty batteries in the latest version of its top of the line smartphone which first went on sale last month.
When it first offered on Sept. 2 to replace the affected Note 7 phones Samsung said it would swap them for models of its other phones such as the Galaxy S7 until supplies of replacement Note 7 devices became available.
Samsung followed up last week by announcing that U.S. consumers who had purchased one of the recalled phones could choose between a replacement or a refund fro the device which sells for about $850. That offer was jointly announced with officials at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after Samsung was criticized for not coordinating more closely with the commission.
Safety officials have urged Note 7 owners to turn off their phones and return them immediately. They cited reports of Note 7 batteries overheating in the United States including 26 instances where individuals were burned and 55 that caused property damage.
The problem doesn’t affect all Note 7 phones because Samsung uses batteries from different suppliers. But the company has said about 2.5 million devices may be affected worldwide including 1 million sold in the United States.
Samsung also said it’s pushing out two software updates through wireless carriers. One will show a green battery icon to confirm that a Note 7 device is a new one that doesn’t have the battery problem. The other will display a short notice to owners of older phones covered by the recall telling them to turn off their device and take it in for a replacement.
About a quarter of affected phones had been exchanged in the United States by Tuesday According to a spokeswoman for Samsung’s U.S. subsidiary. She was unable to say how many Note 7 buyers sought refunds but said “the vast majority” received a different Samsung phone as a replacement.

23、An old man in a faded yellow shirt sat in a windowless room on a raised concrete form. The only source of heat came from somewhere beneath the plastic mattress and the rough blanket the blank-faced police woman had handed him after taking his thumb prints. He heard voices and metallic clang as the cell door swung open.
At the front desk a tired looking policeman handed the old man back his belongings, his worn-out cap and the Seiko watch that had stopped working the day his beloved Evelyn left. The policeman dramatically held the blue plastic bag at an arm’s length to the old man who took it and made sure its contents were undamaged: the goat meat, palm oil, leaves and spices. He ignored the confused expression on the officer’s face and signed the document declaring he had been returned the possessions they had taken off him the night before.
No one spoke to him as he walked slowly towards the exit.
“Mr. Easy-nwa?” He stopped and prayed to the God who now took care of Evelyn to please take him far away from this unhappy place of expressionless faces, clipped accents and people who did not even attempt to pronounce his name right.
“Ezenwa,” He said and looked at a woman with tangerine lips, her name tag said Jessica Harlow, Social Services. “A bit far from home, she said as she drove fast and with confidence the way Evelyn used to. He wondered if she meant the 50 miles from Liverpool or the 50,000 miles from Enugu,a city in Nigeria. He did not bother replying as this woman had plenty to say about the weather, bad drivers, her daughter’s school play...
At last she drew up outside the block of flats where he lived.
“Got here in the end”,said she seriously, “Really Mr. Easy-nwa, if you keep getting lost, we will have to consider moving you into a home”.
“No need, I was not lost,he answered. He carefully rolled up the sleeves of the oversize bomber jacket he wore and turned on the tap to wash his hands, relieved the pipes were not frozen. In a clean pan he placed the chopped pieces of goat meat. The herbs and spices that had taken him three months to track down, the uziza seeds had taken him into the heart of Granby Market in Liverpool, his uchanwu leaves down a shady back alley in Manchester, and yesterday, among other food items, the finest goat meat from a Sierra Leonean Butcher in Birmingham. That had taken some time, so much he missed the last train and when the police found him shivering outside the locked up station, so cold he couldn’t answer loudly enough the pink-faced big copper who yelled in his face, “What’s your name sir?” spraying his face with spittle (吐沫)as he did so, leaving them with no choice but to search an exhausted, frozen old black man and finding him in possession of mysterious condiments (调味品)including a bag of dried bitter-leaf which could of course be mistaken for anything that resulted in him getting read his rights and charged with ...possession???
He lifted the lid of the bubbling soup, the room was filled with the rich and spicy scent of his culinary (烹饪的)effort. He served two bowls, taking the chipped one and placing the other opposite where Evelyn would have sat. He would tell her about his adventure, it was their anniversary and this was the perfect pepper soup to celebrate.

24、The dodo is among the most famous extinct creatures, and_______for human-caused extinction events. Despite its bad name, and the fact that the species was alive during recorded human history, little is actually known about how this animal lived, looked, and behaved. A new study of the only known complete skeleton(骨架) from a single bird takes advantage of modern 3-D laser scanning(扫描) technology to open a new window into the life of this famous extinct bird.
The study was presented at the 74th Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Estrel, Berlin. Leon Claessens, Associate Professor at the College of the Holy Cross, and lead researcher on the study said that, "the 3-D laser surface scans we made of the fragile dodo skeletons enable us to reconstruct how the dodo walked, moved and lived to a level of detail that has never been possible before. There are so many outstanding questions about the dodo bird that we can answer with this new knowledge."
A complete dodo skeleton, found by an amateur collector and barber, Etienne Thirioux, on the island of Mauritius between 1899 and 1917, has remained unstudied, even though it is the only complete dodo skeleton from a single individual bird known to exist. All other skeletons are incomplete combinations, meaning that they are gathered from more than one individual. In addition, Thirioux constructed a second, partially combined skeleton, which contains many bones that also belong to a single bird. "Being able to examine the skeleton of a single, individual dodo, which is not made up from as many individual birds as there are bones, as is the case in all those other combined skeletons, truly allows us to appreciate the way the dodo looked and see how tall or fat it really was," said Juilan Hume, of the Natural History Museum UK, a co-author on the study.
The scans were performed on site in Durban, South Africa, and allow examination of the biology of this mysterious extinct bird in detail for the first time. Using the newest digital tools and techniques, the scans provide an insight into how the flightless dodo may have developed its giant size, and how it walked and lived in its forest home. According to Kenneth Rijsdijk, a biologist from University of Amsterdam, “the skull of the dodo is so large and its mouth so strong that it is easy to understand that the earliest naturalists thought it was related to sharks and other birds of prey(猛禽), rather than the pigeon family.”

阅读下面短文, 然后按要求写一篇150个词左右的英语短文。
If you ask people what makes them happy, you will probably get many different answers but there are two fundamental things that will ensure happiness.
The first part of what makes people happy is growth. When you feel like you are improving your life, that’s when you are happy. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to constantly buy bigger and better things. You need to feel like you are growing on a personal level. You need to know that the essence of who you are is continually improving in some ways. Keep looking for ways to make yourself better today than you were yesterday. This can mean different things to different people but the point is that you have to feel like you are improving and getting better as a human being as time goes by.
The second part of what makes people happy is the sense of contribution. Everyone wants to believe that they were put here to do something great. As long as you know that by your being here, by doing what you are doing, you are helping someone somewhere, it will bring you happiness.
These are two ways of how to find happiness. Are these the only answers to what makes people happy? That depends on how you define happiness.
