二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Throughout history, the world looks for heroes in times of uncertainty. But what makes a hero? A cape (披风) and tights? Heroism is something that every one of us can aspire to, but not all of us will achieve. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero: bravery, compassion, dedication and sacrifice.

In a paper published in Review of General Psychology, researchers Blau, Franco and Zimbardo agreed on a definition of heroism: Heroes voluntarily serve others in need and are willing to make sacrifices for these actions without expecting any reward or personal gain. 1. People who become heroes care for the people around them and are also able to see things from others' perspectives. They value the well-being of others.

2 Despite your good intentions, trying to be a hero in a dangerous situation when you have nothing to offer others may be foolish and could create more difficulties for rescue workers. For example, first aid training or knowledge of kung fu may be useful in certain situations and pave the path for heroism. Even if you possess heroic traits, the right situation must arise in order to truly become a hero. Only when there are dangerous situations can a hero rise up to save the day. 3. This is true bravery.

Heroes are needed every day, and we can read about them in the most recent news. 4. Doctors and nurses treat sick patients despite the risk of becoming sick themselves. Others have changed lives by donating a life-saving organ or just doing a favor when there's a need.

Even though most of us won't save the world, 5. American actor Christopher Reeve, most famous for his role as Superman, said, "A hero is someone who, in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway."

A.Heroes always have good purposes and brave to face danger.

B.We can work at developing the hero inside of us.

C.Empathy and compassion for others are also common traits that all heroes seem to possess.

    D.Heroes are everywhere to find.

E.To be a hero, you must have certain strengths.

F.There are firefighters who run into burning buildings to save the people inside.

G.A hero must risk his or her life to save others.

  • 22、The malls were filled with people seeking gifts for their loved ones. Some of the malls remained open around the clock, partly to satisfy our needs to buy gifts.

Behind the materialistic aspect of shopping for gifts lies the idea of caring, being attentive to the desires of special people in our lives. However, to use a well-worn play on words: it is our presence, not our presents, that truly counts. Many of us, unfortunately, can be so inattentive, even in the presence of our loved ones, that we might as well not be there at all.

Attention is one of the greatest gifts we can give each other. Companies around the globe spend billions every year on advertising to catch our attention for just a short moment at a time. Whole industries media, entertainment, education rely on the precious gift of our attention for their continued existence. A baby lacking attention for a long time is likely to be psychologically unhealthy.

In earlier times, both diet and attention could be left unregulated (没人管的) without major cause for concern. There were natural checks and balances: limited availability of food meant few got fat, for example. Similarly, in bygone times we might have spent a few hours communicating with the village storyteller; today, watching an entire TV series, while speaking to nobody, is common. In traditional societies, with smaller population, everyone would get a fair deal of attention. On many issues we might go to see Grandma or Grandpa; now we have Google and Wikipedia.

“She just wants attention.” people tend to think little of those doing things simply for attention. But the truth is that human beings need attention, and giving attention to each other is, to a large extent, what human civilization is based upon. This perhaps explains the runaway success of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. While we use such sites for “micro Hogging”, “idea voicing” and “status updates” the reality is that we are often doing no more or less than fulfilling our basic human drive for attention exchange.

I friend you, you friend me, I retweet you, you retweet me. The charming ease with which we can now get and give attention is why many people appear overly attached to their smartphones. It is also a vicious (恶性的) circle. As ever more people are busy exchanging attention online, there is increasingly less attention to be paid in the real world, which forces more people to seek their attention exchange online, or else risk attention-starvation.

The very nature of attention exchange is being rapidly transformed, and there is a danger that some of us will develop unhealthy practices. Just as eating red meat every day is a bad idea, so it is with too much attention exchange. The biological consequences of our technological advancement in food production are highly visible; heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The consequences of our transformed attention exchanges will be psychological and social, and so may take longer to identify, but they will be equally damaging.

Face-to-face attention is becoming rarer, and therefore more valuable. In a sense it is priceless. And it is a gift that can be given all-year-round.

【1】In the first two paragraphs the author __________.

    A. offers advice to attention givers

    B. analyses the present problems

    C. states the necessity of presents

    D. puts forward his point of view

2What can we infer from Paragraphs 6-7?

    A. More people will risk attention-starvation in future.

    B. The nature of attention exchange is rarely changed.

    C. Technological advancement contributes to all diseases.

    D. Transformed attention exchanges do harm to society.

3The writer’s purpose for writing the passage is to __________.

    A. advocate more focus on real life attention

    B. analyze the necessity of attention giving

    C. give practical tips on attention exchange

    D. recommend some social networking sites

  • 23、COVID-19 changed how we approach education, travel, leisure activities. and just about every other aspect of our lives. What about the food we eat? Is the pandemic (疫情) influencing consumer desire for plant-based or cultured meat?

Shortly after pandemic lockdowns were put in place, interest in meat alternatives was soaring among consumers. On May 15th, Bloomberg News reported that sales of plant-based meat in grocery stores jumped a remarkable 264% in the nine weeks ending   May 2nd —while at the same time overall consumer spending decreased sharply.

What contributed to this sudden sharp increase in sales of meat alternatives? And will it be sustained (可持续) when we start to ease back into our “new normal”? In an interview with Food Navigator, David Brandes, co-founder of cultured meat supplier Peace of Meat. shared his view that the pandemic would drive interest in food solutions that are perceived to be more sustainable, environmentally-friendly and safe.

It’s clear that the pandemic has driven significant interest in meat alternatives. Combine the desire for sustainability and safer foods with concerns over supply chains and working conditions that may contribute to outbreaks, and you have a recipe for change.

But this interest didn’t just start with the pandemic. Sales of bean-based meat substitutes grew by 451% in Europe between 2013 and 2017. And a survey conducted before the pandemic reported that more than 40% of Americans reported having personally tried plant-based meat. And 60% of the people who had tried it said they were either “very” or “somewhat likely” to continue eating meat alternatives.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives in countless ways and highlighted new ideas and opportunities for a safer and more sustainable future. Undoubtedly, this global crisis further brightened the spotlight on alternatives to the meat we eat and how it is produced, ensuring that consumers will experience the benefits for years to come.

【1】Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?

    A.To express his doubts.

    B.To compare different ideas.

    C.To introduce points for discussion.

D.To describe the effects of the pandemic.

【2】What originally contributes to the increasing interest in meat alternatives?

    A.The global pandemic crisis.

    B.Their sustainability and safety.

    C.The change of people’s recipe.

D.Their low prices and high quality.

    【3】How is Paragraph 5 organized?

    A.By analyzing data.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By stating arguments.

    D.By making comparisons.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Will the pandemic influence our daily life?

B.Will meat alternatives become “the new normal”?

C.Which is better, plant-based meat or cultured meat?

D.Why does people’s interest in meat alternatives increase?

  • 24、Give it five minutes

I used to be a hothead. Whenever anyone said anything, I’d think of a way to disagree. I’d push back hard if something didn’t fit my world-view.

It’s like I had to be first with an opinionas if being first meant something. But what it really meant was that I wasn’t thinking hard enough about the problem. The faster you react, the less you think. Not always, but often.

This came to a head back in 2007. I was speaking at the Business Innovation Factory conference in Providence, RI. So was Richard Saul Wurman. After my talk Richard came up to introduce himself and compliment my talk. That was very generous of him. He certainly didn’t have to do that.

And what did I do? I pushed back at him about the talk he gave. While he was making his points on stage, I was taking an inventory of the things I didn’t agree with. And when presented with an opportunity to speak with him, I quickly pushed back at some of his ideas. I must have seemed like such an asshole.

His response changed my life. It was a simple thing. He said “Man, give it five minutes.” I asked him what he meant by that? He said, it’s fine to disagree, it’s fine to push back, it’s great to have strong opinions and beliefs, but give my ideas some time to set in before you’re sure you want to argue against them. “Five minutes” represented “think”, not react. He was totally right. I came into the discussion looking to prove something, not learn something.

This was a big moment for me.

Richard has spent his career thinking about these problems. He’s given it 30 years. And I gave it just a few minutes. Now, certainly he can be wrong and I could be right, but it’s better to think deeply about something first before being so certain you’re right.

There’s also a difference between asking questions and pushing back. Pushing back means you already think you know. Asking questions means you want to know. Ask more questions.

Learning to think first rather than react quick is a life-long pursuit. It’s tough. I still get hot sometimes when I shouldn’t. But I’m really enjoying all the benefits of getting better.

If you aren’t sure why this is important, think about this quote from Jonathan Ive regarding Steve Jobs’ reverence(respect) for ideas:

And just as Steve loved ideas, and loved making stuff, he treated the process of creativity with a rare and a wonderful reverence. You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily compromised, so easily just squished.

That’s deep. Ideas are fragile. They often start powerless. They’re barely there, so easy to ignore or skip or miss.

There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spending other people’s money and 2. Dismissing an idea.

Dismissing an idea is so easy because it doesn’t involve any work. You can scoff at it. You can ignore it. You can puff some smoke at it. That’s easy. The hard thing to do is protect it, think about it, let it marinate, explore it, riff on it, and try it. The right idea could start out life as the wrong idea.

So next time you hear something, or someone, talk about an idea, pitch an idea, or suggest an idea, give it five minutes. Think about it a little bit before pushing back, before saying it’s too hard or it’s too much work.

Those things may be true, but there may be another truth in there too: It may be worth it.

1Which of the following best describes the word hothead from the first paragraph?

    A. Supportive B. Fast C. Nervous  D. Aggressive

2What did the author do while Richard was talking in the business conference?

    A. He kept notes for things that he did not agree with.

    B. He pushed Richard and beat him.

    C. He was preparing for his own speech.

    D. He was getting ready to compliment him.

3Which of the following is the reason for quoting Jonathan Ive?

    A. The author thinks Steve Job is the best when it comes to creativity.

    B. The author is inspired by Steve Job's attitude towards new ideas.

    C. The author respects Steve Job because he is creative and he likes ideas.

    D. The author thinks Steve Job has ideas that are strong and powerful and are hard to miss.

4What is the core argument that the author put forward?

    A. Dismissing ideas is an effortless thing to do so you should always protect ideas carefully.

    B. The right idea always starts from a wrong idea and you need to protect it from being dismissed.

    C. One should be careful when it comes to judge a new idea.

    D. Every idea, whether powerful or fragile deserves five minutes

James Bender, in his book How to Talk Well tells the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.

The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” The reporter asked. “Why,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen(花粉) from the ripening corn and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow bad corn, cross-pollination(异花受粉) will slowly reduce the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.

He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbors’ corn also improves. The lesson for each of us is this: If we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.
