二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A colleague recently sent me an article, Cutting back on waste is possible—if you can afford it, to read. It argued that reducing waste—food-related, in particular—is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone working low-wage jobs with little extra time. The conclusion? Zero waste is something only suitable for people who can afford, not for those who are struggling to make a living.

However. I disagree with the idea that zero waste must be all or nothing. I think this is an unfortunate attitude that prevents valuable progress toward reducing one's food-related waste. When we get too hung up on the idea of so-called zero waste and of being like the zero waste superstar Bea Johnson who can fit years of trash in a single jar, we start missing the broader point. The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable(可持续的)for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.

I live in a small rural town with no fancy zero-waste stores. My husband and I both work full-time. I am uninterested in spending my free time doing DIY projects and driving from store to store in search of perfect packaging. Instead, I just do the best I can.

When I first read about Bea Johnson's multi-stop grocery shopping routine, I tried to copy it. That lasted a few weeks before I gave up. Unlike her, I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores are closer together than in rural Ontario. Instead, I've resigned myself to the supermarket being the main supply of food and trying to work with it.

Now, when I enter the supermarket on a once-weekly basis, I view all packaging through a critical eye. I make constant comparisons between how one brand packages its food to another. That is the main reason in deciding what to buy, though I also consider the unit price, the place of origin and the ingredients.

【1】What is the idea of the article recommended by the author's colleague?

A.Cutting down on waste costs much.

    B.Food-related waste is unavoidable.

C.Most people can afford zero waste.

A.It is related to recycling our resources,

B.It prevents people from reducing waste.

    C.It encourages reasonable green practices.

D.It means fitting your trash in a single jar.

【3】Why did the author fail to follow Bea Johnson?

A.Her love for shopping was deeply rooted.

B.She hardly knew about food packaging

    C.She didn't receive her husband's support.

D.Her living situations differed from hers

【4】What's the best title for the text?

    A.Live in a Small Town for a Zero-waste Life

  • 23、According to a recent study, laughter and joy may not be unique to humans. Ancestral forms of play and laughter existed in other animals long before they did in humans. Jaak Panksepp, a professor of psychobiology at Washington State University and the author of the study, says, “Human laughter has deep roots in our animal past.”

While humans are the only creatures that tell jokes, it has long been suspected that some animals like to laugh. In 1872, Charles Darwin pointed out that “very many kinds of monkeys, when pleased, make a sound, clearly analogous to our laughter.” In an experiment Panksepp had performed earlier, he found that when chimpanzees (黑猩猩) play, they make noises strikingly like human laughter, and that dogs have a similar response.

Panksepp notes that children who are too young to laugh at jokes are likely to laugh during noisy plays. Panksepp found that when young rats (老鼠) are playing, they also make sounds - they chirp (发唧唧声), although people can’t hear them. These chirps are far too high for humans to hear. Researchers must use special electronic receivers that change the chirps to sounds that humans can hear.

In studying laughter, scientists have focused mostly on related issues - humor, personality, health benefits, social theory - rather than laughter itself. New research, however, shows that circuits (电路) for laughter exist in very ancient parts of the human brain. The ability to laugh appears early in childhood, as anyone who has seen a baby laugh knows.

Some scientists say that other mammals, just like humans, have many feelings. “The recognition by neuroscientists that the brain mechanisms (机制) causing pain, pleasure and fear are the same in humans and other mammals shows our similarity to other species and extremely important.” said Tecumseh Fitch, a psychology lecturer at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Science has traditionally held that humour is only a human quality, and many scientists believe that more research is required before rats’ chirping sounds can be considered real laughter. Panksepp believes that, through a study of laughter in rats, the human sense of humour can be more fully understood.

【1】What is the finding of the recent study?

A.Animals can also play jokes on others.

    B.Animals can hardly express happiness.

C.Human laughter has its origin in animal sounds.

D.Humans actually developed from ancient animals.

【2】What does the underlined word “analogous” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Similar.

    B.Special.

    C.Familiar.

    D.Important.

【3】What can be learned about rats’ chirps?

A.They are beyond human hearing range.

B.They sound like young kids’ sounds.

C.They are made during rats’ fighting.

    D.They may affect human feelings.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Mammals have a particularly sensitive brain area.

B.Humans have fully understood animals’ behaviours.

C.People and animals share some emotional responses

D.Rats’ chirps and human laughter are basically the same.

  • 24、Reaching the top

Many social scientists have studied the phenomenon of success. One American study claims that your social network is the key to success. 【1】 Perhaps this boosts your self-confidence or perhaps you have more people to support you. Another study links height and success: every extra centimeter is worth another $300 per year. The trouble is that for every person to whom these theories apply, there is an exception.

However, in his book Outliers — The Story of Success, author, Malcolm Gladwell, has come up with a theory that he claims is true in every case. 【2】He has calculated exactly how many hours work you need to do in order to become ‘the best’ in your field: 10,000 hours apparently or about four hours a day for ten years. Without this kind of determination and hard work you probably won’t reach the top, regardless of your talent.

Researchers looked at violin players in a music school to test this theory. Teachers put the players into three groups: average players in group C, good players in group B and outstanding players in group A. It turned out that all the players in group A had done around 10,000 hours of practice in their lifetime. The good players had done around 6,000 hours and the average players only 4,000 hours. However, all the players had entered the school with similar levels of ability.

【3】 Mozart, for example, is always considered a ‘born genius’. He performed in public at the age of four and by six, he had composed several pieces. Surely his success was down to natural talent, not hard work? In fact, Gladwell argues, Mozart had a very strict father who made him practice for hours each day from an early age. And the music that Mozart composed when he was six wasn’t outstanding. 【4】 By that time, he’d done at least 10,000 hours of practice and had ‘become’ a genius.

Talent, argues Gladwell, is nothing without hard work. So next time you dream of scoring the winning goal in the World Cup or winning an Oscar, ask yourself this question: are you really prepared to put in the hours necessary to achieve your goal?

A.He says that the secret of success is simply many hours of hard work.

B.But surely there are exceptions to this rule?

C.Nevertheless, researchers do find some exceptions.

D.Mozart wrote his first real masterpiece when he was twenty-one.

E.Apparently, every extra friend that you have at school adds two percent to your salary later in life!

F.Talent didn’t seem to work as well as generally thought.
