  • 21、Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances, which is why when Sophie Murphy boarded a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne and noticed an "awful tension" in the cabin, she first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.

A teenage boy with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew's warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing -- and angering people on the already tense flight.

"If it were a cartoon," remembered Murphy, "there would have been smoke coming out of people's ears."

As the boy's elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain, Murphy, 42 -- who had been a teacher for more than 20 years -- stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him.

Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand -- and then together they got properly back into airplane seats. Murphy asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they'd get through it together.

After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect. Instead, calmed passengers -- obviously following Murphy's amazing example -- allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Murphy for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her know he had even taken notes on her expert way of handling the situation.

【1】The landing was delayed because ________.

    A.a family ignored the warnings

B.a boy refused to sit in his seat

C.smoke was coming out of the engine

D.the pilot was forced to change the destination

【2】Murphy successfully handled the "awful tension" by ________.

    A.fighting against unfair treatment

B.calling on other passengers to join her

    C.communicating with the boy

D.asking an experienced doctor to help

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Murphy?

    A.Generous and cautious.

    B.Patient and enthusiastic.

    C.Wise and cooperative.

    D.Kind and cool-headed.

  • 22、As the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are just around the corner. The emblem(会徽) and pins have attracted attention from people around the world.

The inspiration of the emblem design comes from the Chinese character for winter-“冬”. A calligraphic rendition of the Chinese character, which infuses Chinese culture with contemporary artistic elements, projects a new image of China in a new era, demonstrating the country’s commitment to a successful Winter Games. The upper part of the emblem resembles a skater and its lower part a skier. The ribbon in between, full of rhythm, stands for the host country’s rolling mountains, games venues, ski courses and skating tracks. The ribbons give a touch of festivity and are an indication that the Games coincide with the celebrations of the Chinese New Year.

Unlike some designs for other sport games or festivals in the country, the upcoming Winter Olympics pins combine traditional Chinese culture and modern aesthetics. People think the style of the collection is unique and romantic. Particularly, some limited editions, such as a series of four inspired by ancient Chinese fairy tales, quickly sold out. If collectors get all pins in the series, they can piece them together in a shape of a big “0”, indicating the wait is over and kicking off the Winter Games. Moreover, the series of ancient myth pins include elements of Chinese fairy tales in their design. They vividly show images of Nuwa fixing the sky and Kuafu chasing the sun. Only 2.022 of each fairy tale pin were produced. Other pin pattens include traditional games, for example, the ancient Chinese ball game, cuju. Ice play, an old sport in North China, is also displayed on a single pin.

As the host of the 2022 Games, Beijing has told its own stories to the world through the emblem and colorful pins, designed to welcome athletes and audiences from home and abroad.

【1】What elements does the pattern of the emblem contain?

A.It consists of sports on the ice and the ribbons.

B.It covers the relevant features of winter.

    C.It includes all competition items.

D.It is only a dynamic Chinese character.

【2】What is the shared design concept of the emblem and pins?

A.It describes ancient Chinese fairy tales.

B.It embodies the art of Chinese calligraphy

C.It mixes traditional culture with modern art.

D.It follows the latest creative trend.

【3】What does the shape of “0” in Para3 stand for?

A.The first letter of the Olympics.

B.The spirits of the Winter Sports.

    C.The achievement of the Olympics.

D.The start of the Winter Sports.

【4】What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

A.Beijing is set to host both seasonal Olympics.

B.The designs of the emblem and pins express cultural confidence.

C.The stories behind the emblem and pins are imaginative.

D.Winter Sports are a must for all people to participate in.

  • 23、After any tragedy, there are always stories of selfless people risking their lives to save others.

From evolutionary aspects, this kind of things seems to make no sense. After all, the survival and reproduction of an individual’s genes should be the first choice. 【1】 So why do so many people do it?

Psychologists call this sort of selfless action “extreme altruism”. Unlike most people, extreme altruists rank the needs of total strangers equally to those of their own families and friends. As US writer Larissa Macfarquahar explains, “【2】 No one is more or less human than anyone else.”

According to a study in PLOS ONE by David Rand and Ziv Epstein of Yale University, making this decision to save someone else’s life in an emergency is typically an instant decision. 【3】

The study asks whether such actions might be related to the right amygdala in our brains. When looking at photos of people showing fear or distress, some people show more activity in their right amygdala. This means that some people are born with a greater capacity for empathy. 【4】

However, the researchers say it’s not the only reason for heroic actions. An American writer Carrie Beckner claims that we also possess an “inner hero”. 【5】 We all can choose to be people of action, if only we can find that little hero inside of ourselves.

A.One wants the best for one’s self.

B.Not everyone needs an inner hero in his heart.

C.They understand others’ emotions more deeply.

D.Volunteers are not motivated by self-interest, but by altruism.

E.In other words, the life-savers said they didn’t think—they just acted.

F.For an extreme altruist, an African child can suffer as much as my mother—or me.

G.If stirred to action, that inner hero is capable of performing tremendous goodness for others.

  • 24、   Maths and Music An excellent way to kill a conversation is to say you are a mathematician Tell others you are also a musician however and they will be hooked Although there are obvious similarities between mathematical and musical activity there is no direct evidence for the kind of magical connection many people seem to believe in

I'm partly referring here to the "Mozart effect" where children who have been playing Mozart compositions are supposedly more intelligent including at maths than other children It is not hard to see why such a theory would be popular we would all like to become better at maths without putting in any effort But the conclusions of the experiment that expressed the belief in the Mozart effect were much more modest If you want your brain to work better you clearly have to put in hard work As for learning to play the piano it also takes effort

Surely a connection is quite reasonable Both maths and music deal with abstract structures so if you become good at one then it is likely that you become good at something more general that helps you with the other If this is correct it would show a connection between mathematical and musical ability It would be more like the connection between abilities at football and tennis To become better at one you need to improve your fitness and coordination (协调). That makes you better at sport and probably helps with the other

Abstract structures don't exist only in maths and music If you learn a language then you need to understand its abstract structures like grammar Yet we don't hear people asking about a connection between mathematical and linguistic (语言的) ability Maybe this is because grammar feels mathematical so it wouldn't be surprising that mathematicians were better at learning grammar Music however is strongly tied up with feelings and can be enjoyed even by people who know little about it As such it seems different from maths so there wouldn't be any connection between the two

Let's see how we solve problems of the "A is to B as C is to D" kind These appear in intelligence tests but they are also important to both music and maths Consider the opening of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (小夜曲). The second phrase (小节) is a clear answer to the first The listener thinks "The first phrase goes upward and uses the notes of a G major chord (和弦); what would be the corresponding phrase that goes downward and uses the notes of a D7" Music is full of puzzles like this If you are good at them expectations will constantly be set up in your mind The best moments surprise you by being unexpected but we need the expectations in the first place

1What does the author say about "Mozart effect" ______

    A. The goal of it was not carefully thought about

    B. The findings from it gave people wrong information

    C. The interest people showed in it was unexpected

    D. The way it was carried out proved to be ineffective

2The author mentioned football and tennis in Paragraph 3to show that ______

    A. football and tennis are played in a similar way

    B. certain skills may be developed through practice

    C. music and maths have something in common

    D. abstract structures bring benefits to various fields

    3We can infer from Paragraph 4that ______

    A. language seems more like maths than music does

    B. language is less appealing to learners

    C. mathematicians are good at music learning

    D. the structure of language is easier to learn than that of music

4What does the writer intend to state in the last paragraph ______

    A. How music differs from maths

    B. Why musicians possess mathematical abilities

    C. Why Mozart is so highly considered by mathematicians

    D. How abstract thinking applies to both music and maths
