二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I was sent this summer by my parents for a so-called walking tour of Switzerland, with a tutor. I need hardly say we travelled by train so far as the money lasted. The tutor and I climbed mountains. I longed to climb the Matterhorn, but this was not only too expensive but held by the tutor to be too dangerous. All this, however, might easily have been upset by an incident which happened to me in the lake of Lausanne.

I went for a row with another boy. When we were more than a mile from the shore, we decided to have a swim. When we had had enough, the boat was perhaps one hundred yards away. The boat had a small red awning(遮阳棚) over its hard seats. This awning acted as a sail by catching the wind. As we swam towards the boat, it drifted(漂浮) farther off. After this happened several times we had perhaps halved the distance. But meanwhile the breeze was freshening and we both, especially my companion, began to be tired.

Up to this point no idea of danger had crossed my mind. The sun played upon the dancing blue waters. But now I saw Death as near as I believe I have ever seen him. He was swimming in the water at our side, whispering from time to time in the rising wind which continued to carry the boat away from us at about the same speed we could swim. No help was near. Unaided, we could never reach the shore.

I now swam for my life. Twice I reached within a yard of the boat and each time a strong wind carried it just beyond my reach; but by my greatest effort I caught hold of its side just in time before a still stronger wind bumped the red awning again. I climbed in, and rowed back for my companion who, though tired, had not apparently realized the dull yellow glare of deadly riskiness that had so suddenly played around us. I said nothing to the tutor about this serious experience; but I have never forgotten it.

【1】Why does the writer use “so-called” to describe the walking tour in paragraph 1?

A.The tutor walked while the writer went by train.

B.It was a climbing trip rather than a walking tour.

C.They only walked when they ran out of money.

D.They were all supposed to be travelling by train-

【2】What mistake did the boys make?

A.They didn’t know the lake had a strong current.

B.They were unaware of the coldness of the breeze.

C.They had no idea they had swum so far from the boat.

D.They didn’t realize the boat would move away from them.

【3】Who or what does underlined word “He” refer to in paragraph 3?

    A.Death.

    B.A ghost.

    C.The tutor.

    D.The writer’s friend.

【4】How did the writer react to the experience on the lake?

A.He was afraid his parents might be angry.

B.He became aware of some of life’s dangers.

C.He thought it was an unimportant incident.

D.He felt proud of saving the other boy’s life.

  • 22、Waking Up an Hour Earlier Can Help Fight Depression

Adequate (充足的) sleep is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Now, new research has revealed that good health also depends on sleep schedules. In fact, waking up an hour earlier is generally found to help prevent or fight against major depression.

This discovery was made in a study conducted by researchers from the University of Colorado in 2021. They found that waking up an hour earlier helps people who usually get up later improve their mood. 【1】

This research adds to other similar studies which suggested that early risers tend to be healthier. At the same time, the fact that waking up an hour earlier improves the mood is associated with enjoying more hours of sunshine to a large extent.

The study started from the assumption that if people go to bed an hour earlier, they'll also wake up an hour earlier. Based on this idea, the researchers came to the conclusion that if people who go to bed at 3 am, decide to go to bed at 2 am, their risk of suffering from depression is reduced by 23 percent. 【2】

【3】 Generally they assumed that it's because daylight generates a large amount of hormonal (荷尔蒙的) impacts that affect mood. However, experts do not rule out (排除) the idea that non-early risers have a certain mismatch with social rhythms. This is because we live in a society that focuses more on daytime activities. 【4】 In fact, being a night owl effectively means giving up a "normal life".

However, the study indicates that all of this is assumption. 【5】 In this way, they can continue to work out the reasons why waking up an hour earlier can have such an impact on depression.

A.The experts, though, didn't fully understand the reasons.

B.It can also reduce the risk of developing major depression.

C.However, waking up one hour earlier causes some problems.

D.For this reason, experts stress the need for new and extensive research.

E.Sometimes they become energetic the next day when they have enough sleep.

F.If they went to bed at 1 am, the risk reduction could be as much as 40 percent.

G.Therefore, not keeping with that social rhythm can cause certain feelings of inadequacy.

  • 24、Police around the world have for almost 100 years relied on lie detectors to help spot criminals. But there has long been much skepticism in the scientific and legal communities about the lie detector’s reliability. Hopefully, it could soon be no longer in use.

Researchers in Britain and the Netherlands have made a breakthrough, developing a  more  reliable method to help conduct interviews. Rather than just record changes in pulse, blood pressure, sweating and breathing, the new system involves monitoring full-body motions to provide an indicator of signs of guilty feelings.

There is a basic fact that liars tend to keep moving their hands and feet and so an all-body motion suit  will pick this up. The suit contains 17 sensors that record movement in 23 joints up to 120 times per second.

“The lie detector has been around since the 1920s and by measuring physiological stress caused by anxiety, you can only get a success rate of about 60%.”, said Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering at Cambridge University.

He said the new method, by contrast, achieved a reliability rating of over 70% and he was quite sure that they would be able to do better. In one of their experiments, the team has already achieved more than 80%.

The experiment involved 180 students and employees at Lancaster University, of which half were told to tell the truth and half to lie. They were each paid £7.50 for their participation in the 70-minute experiment, involving two test.

Some were interviewed about a computer game “Never End” that they played for seven minutes, while others lied about playing it having only been shown notes about it.

The second test involved a lost wallet containing £ 5. Some were asked to bring the wallet to a lost-and-found box while others hid it and lied about it.

“Overall, we correctly classified 82.2% of the interviewees as either being truthful or dishonest.”, the report said.

But the use of all-body suits is expensive — they cost about £30,000 — and can be uncomfortable, so Anderson and his colleagues are now looking at low-cost alternatives.

1The researchers used the all-body motion suit to   .

    A. discover people’s joint problems

    B. record people’s changes in their health

    C. help find out interviewees’ mental activities

    D. prevent liars from moving their hands and feet

2What is the main disadvantage of the lie detector?

    A. It has a low success rate   B. It is very uncomfortable

    C. It is too complex to use   D. It costs a lot of money

3How does Anderson feel about the new method?

    A. Confused   B. Confident

    C. Doubtful   D. Disappointed
