二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   For generations, students were taught to stretch before playing games. Then the practice fell out of favor. Studies seemed to show that such stretching temporarily reduces muscular power, weakens athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. So most fitness experts currently advise against stretches before exercise. But now a new research indicates that they might not be such a bad idea after all.

This month, the journal, Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM), published a study by four distinguished exercise scientists who analyzed more than 200 studies of how stretching affects the following exercise. In broad terms, they found that stretching can briefly prevent the ability to generate power. So if you reach for your toes and hold that position, tightening your hamstrings (腿筋), you might not then be able to leap as high or start a dash as forcefully as you don’t stretch.

Those undesirable effects were generally found, however, only if each stretch was held for more than 60 seconds and the subject then immediately became fully active, with no further warm-up. “Outside the lab, most people are unlikely to hold a warm-up stretch for longer than about 30 seconds.” Dr. McHugh, the co-author of the study says. The review found few lasting negative impacts from these short stretches, especially if the volunteers followed that stretching with several minutes of jogging or other basic warm-up movements. In fact, these short stretches turned out to have a positive effect.

Do these findings mean that all the athletes should stretch in advance before a match? “Not necessarily,” Dr. McHugh says, “Runners and cyclists don’t have much risk for acute muscle injuries.” Stretching before these activities is unlikely to protect against injury. Runners and cyclists can adequately warm up by jogging or pedaling lightly. But he suggests that people who play basketball and other ball sports should stretch in advance. Those who haven’t stretched since childhood gym class might want to consider consulting an athletic trainer about the best upper and lower body stretches, particularly for the shoulders and hamstrings.

1According to the new research, people may suffer negative impacts when _______.

A.they do stretches after attending a game

B.they reach for toes and hold that position

C.following a stretch with several minutes’ jogging

D.dashing immediately after one 60-second plus stretch

2We can learn from the passage that _______.

A.all athletes should not stretch in advance

B.the four scientists published the journal APNM

C.it’s unnecessary for a tennis player to do warm-up stretches

D.players ought to have done warm-up stretches since childhood

3What’s Dr. McHugh’s attitude toward stretches?

    A.Concerned. B.Doubtful.

    C.Disapproving. D.Objective.

  • 22、Nov. 21 is World Hello Day. It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created by the United Nations just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973. The philosophy (理念) behind it is: Say “Hello” and stop war.

It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simply saying “Hello” won’t bring about world peace. Still, on a smaller range, the simple act of saying hello to someone can make a lot of difference.

This might not be obvious. After all, it’s such a casual thing and requires so little effort. You raise your head to someone as you pass by them in the school corridor (走廊), say “Hello” then it’s over.

Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Many people are lonely because they’re shy. They find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want to. It leads to them feeling cut off.

On this basis, maybe it’s a good idea, not just on Nov. 21, but every day, to remember to say “Hello” to as many people as we can. The stranger who hears your greeting may secretly smile in their heart. You might even make their day.

Greeting other people is the easiest way to be polite. Politeness is the way we individual humans link up with the rest of the human world outside of our circles of family and friends. Politeness is one of the aspects of culture that make us a society rather than just many individuals living in the same space.

No one said it better than the French author Joseph Joubert: “Politeness is the flower of humanity’’. A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视), but through it we can make the world better for another person.

1What is World Hello Day intended for?

    A. Philosophy.   B. Peace.

    C. Politeness.   D. War.

2What has an effect on people most?

    A. Raising heads to others.

    B. Doing something casually.

    C. Meeting in the school corridor.

    D. The simple act of saying hello.

    3Why does someone feel lonely?

    A. They are unwilling to communicate with others.

    B. They are too shy to communicate with others.

    C. They are very fond of living alone.

    D. They don’t like doing things as others do.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. We should neglect a small thing.

    B. Saying hello to others is powerful.

    C. The flowers make the world better.

    D. No one is better than Joseph Joubert.

  • 23、Commercial airlines alone contribute around 3 percent of total global carbon emissions. But the industry is actively looking for green solutions in the form of sustainable (可持续发展的) airline fuel, and in one case, that fuel may have had a previous life as your household food waste. In a study released this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers detail a method of transforming food waste into sustainable airline fuel.

Biomass (生物质), such as animal and food waste, can be transformed into biofuels, which are renewable liquid fuels made from organic matter. Derek Vardon, a senior research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), says that their fuel worked as a mixture of 90 percent conventional petrol airline fuel and 10 percent alternative airline fuel required by the industry currently. They also show they could push it to a 70/30 mixture with more time and testing available.

Major companies are eager to participate in sustainable airline fuel because some sustainable solutions, such as battery-operated commercial planes, just aren’t possible yet with current battery technology. A battery-powered plane would be too heavy to fly long distances, so fuel that works in the same way as the fuel we have is a simpler way to trade out emission-heavy fossil fuels.

Vardon says that because the wet waste used in the process would normally go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and break down to release greenhouse gases, the process of making and using sustainable airline fuel could actually have a negative carbon footprint when scaled up.

Commercial airlines are also on board to find an affordable and sustainable solution to the carbon-intensive process of air travel. Airlines are looking to hit aggressive sustainability goals by 2050, including decreasing net carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent.

【1】Which of the following is used for sustainable airline power?

    A.Biomass.

    B.Liquid fuel

    C.Battery power.

    D.Fossil fuel.

【2】Why are commercial planes still fuel-powered?

B.It’s convenient to create the proper fuel mixture.

C.Biofuel is environmentally friendly and sustainable.

D.Fuel-powered planes are likely to travel lighter and farther.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “on board” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Taking off.

    B.Participating in.

    C.Holding a meeting.

    D.Appearing on stage.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Alternative Energy to Fossil Fuel.

B.How to Get Fossil Fuel Sustainable.

C.Changing Food Waste into Airplane Fuel.

D.How to Decrease Carbon Dioxide Emissions.

  • 24、More than 50 percent of the largest lakes in the world are losing water, storing less water than they did three decades ago, according to a new assessment published today in Science. The key causes are not surprising: The warming climate and unsustainable human consumption.

Lead author Fangfang Yao, a climate fellow at University of Virginia, and his team created a technique to measure changes in water levels of nearly 2,000 of the world’s biggest lakes and reservoirs (水库), which represent 95 percent of the total lake water storage on Earth.

They used 250,000 lake-area pictures taken by satellites between 1992 and 2020 to survey the area of 1,972 of Earth’s biggest lakes. They collected water levels from nine satellite altimeters (测高计) and used long-term water levels to reduce any uncertainty. For lakes without a long-term level record, they used recent water measurements made by newer instruments on satellites. Combining recent level measurements with longer-term area measurements allowed scientists to reconstruct the volume of lakes dating back decades.

The result was staggering: 53 percent of lakes globally experienced a decline in water storage. The authors compare this loss with the size of 17 Lake Meads, the largest reservoir in the United States.

To explain the trends in natural lakes, the team used recent advancements in water use and climate modeling. “Climate change and human water consumption were mainly responsible for the global net decline in natural lake volume and water losses in about 100 large lakes,” Yao said. “And many of the human and climate change footprints on lake water losses were previously unknown, such as the dryness of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan.”

And their research offers an understanding into possible solutions. Yao said, “If human consumption is a large cause of lake water storage decline, then we can adapt and explore new policies to reduce large-scale (大范围) declines.” This happened in one of the lakes the team studied, Lake Sevan in Armenia. Lake Sevan has seen an increase in water storage, in the last 20 years, which the authors linked to the enforcement (实施) of conservation laws on water withdrawal since the early 2000s.

【1】What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text?

A.Many largest lakes are in decline.

    B.Sustainable development is important.

    C.Global warming is worsening quickly.

D.The water storage system needs improving.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The reason for reducing the uncertainty.

B.The process of looking for lakes.

C.The measures used to do the research.

D.The ways to reconstruct the lakes.

【3】What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Understandable.

    B.Exciting.

    C.Useful.

    D.Shocking.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private stuff.

We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one. It didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look better.

After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out. I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.

When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!

“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.

My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?

I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.

“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.

No, everything was not right. Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).

    “I’m okay,” I lied.

When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.
