二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Sometimes when we are in our darkest hour, something completely unexpected happens that can give us a little bit of hope and comfort.

Jessica was a healthy woman. One day, she woke up and something was not right. After she was sent to the hospital, her heart rate slowed by nearly 50 percent. It took nine days for doctors to zero in on what was causing her problem.

After several weeks, Jessica was able to move her lips. Staff noticed this and introduced Jessica to Consuelo Gonzalez, a professional lip reader. Consuelo can understand what people are saying by the shape their lips make. She can also understand how annoying it is to not be able to communicate because she has been completely deaf since the age of 8.

For a few hours each week, Jessica could have long conversations with Consuelo, diving into the ocean of words she dearly missed. Through Consuelo, Jessica asked the doctors and nurses questions she had long wanted answers to. She also talked to Consuelo about the vivid dreams she was mixing up with reality.

In fact, there are other ways for Consuelo to earn a living by reading lips, but she says helping patients separate horrible dreams from reality is the most rewarding way she can use her unique skill. “What is really wonderful is being able to use this skill to create healing and to create communication between human beings. That’s what feels best: Love.”

After four and a half months in the hospital, Jessica finally recovered. Consuelo was there, holding Jessica’s hands. Jessica eventually went back to work as a math professor. After her experience she wrote a new living will. One thing she added is that if she ever becomes incapacitated like this again, she is never to be left alone.

1What did Consuelo do for Jessica?

    A.She cured Jessica’s heart disease.

B.She taught Jessica how to read lips.

    C.She helped Jessica communicate.

D.She made Jessica’s dream come true.

2How does Consuelo feel about her job?

    A.Horrible. B.Confident. C.Satisfied. D.Worried.

3Which of the following best explains “incapacitated” underlined in the last paragraph?

    A.Less reliable. B.Seriously ill. C.Desperately lonely. D.More fortunate.

4What is the text mainly about?

    A.An unusual skill. B.A life-saving operation.

C.A good living will. D.A close friendship.

  • 22、In 2005, Calvin Echevarria was on top of his game. He had two jobs, bought a house and was raising a 3-year-old daughter with his wife. But suddenly, it felt like it was all being taken away. He could no longer work as a FedEx driver because he was going blind.

He was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy (糖尿病视网膜病变). “I lost my sight and the job, but I don’t care about that. All I care is about my wife and my daughter,” he told CBS News. “How am I going to see my daughter grow?”

Echevarria at first worked on developing independent living skills like walking with a cane (手杖). But he wanted to learn more-like skills that would be useful for a job. That’s when he found Lighthouse Works in Orlando, a company that creates jobs for the blind.

“Seven out of 10 Americans who are blind are not in the workforce,” said Kyle Johnson, the president and CEO of Lighthouse Works. “And we knew that people who are blind are the most highly educated disability group on the planet. And so, very capable people, who want to work and contribute. So, we created Lighthouse Works to help them do that.”

At Lighthouse Works, nearly half of the employees are blind. Echevarria works in the call center. In his work, Echevarria uses a system called JAWS to “hear” the computer. The system reads the computer screen to him in one ear a she listens to a customer call in his other ear. Now he has gotten good at it and can listen to JAWS on a dramatic speed. “”It gives me a purpose. It makes me feel better because I can provide for my family.” he said.

His original worry was not being able to be there for his daughter. Now, he is her mentor (导师), because she’s an employee at Lighthouse Works as well. He said, “Little kids come to their parents, and all of a sudden when they become teenagers, they go away. Now, we’re going back again to those days that my daughter used to come to me all the time. And I still feel needed.”

  • 23、A growing number of Americans are turning gas-powered vehicles into electric ones by using a process called an electric power train conversion. Such conversions are becoming more popular as battery technology gets better and the world turns toward cleaner energy sources.

Kevin Erickson owns a 1972 Plymouth Satellite that he renamed “Electrollite” after conversion. Now, the car can go from a still position to 97 kilometers per hour in about three seconds. Its top speed is almost 250 kilometers per hour.

Jonathan Klinger is vice president of car culture for Hagerty Insurance. He said converting classic cars into EVs is “definitely a trend”, although research on the activity is limited. In May, the Michigan-based company did a web-based study of about 25,000 automobile lovers. The top three reasons for converting the vehicles were for better performance, for a fun project, and because of environmental concerns. He doesn’t think electric motors will replace all gas engines. Some car lovers want to keep the sound of older cars' original engines. Electric conversions require special knowledge to complete. They also involve many difficulties like safety concerns. And then there is the price.

Sean Moudry, who co-owns Inspire EV, a small conversion business near Denver, recently worked on a 1965 Ford Mustang. The year-and-a-half-long project cost more than $100,000. Moudry and his partners replaced the gas engine with a motor from a crashed Tesla Model S. He says many people don’t have the resources necessary to carry out this kind of project. As a result, he says, it will take 20 years for electric conversions to become common.

But that reality could be coming sooner than expected, says Mike Spagnola, president and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a trade group. He said that electric vehicle products took about 1950 square meters of marketing space at SEMA's yearly show in Las Vegas this fall. That was up from only 232 square meters at the 2021 show.

    I’m John Russell.

【1】In which aspect do electric vehicles benefit from the conversion?

    A.Performing better.

    B.Cleaning energy sources.

    C.Maintaining speed.

    D.Bettering battery technology.

【2】How many factors contribute to gas-powered vehicles not being replaced according to Klinger?

    A.3.

    B.4.

    C.5.

    D.6.

【3】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Selling an old car.

    B.Buying a gas-powered vehicle.

    C.Doing a web-based study.

D.Converting a car to an electric one.

【4】What can we know about the writer of the passage?

    A.He loves classic cars.

    B.He repairs old cars.

    C.He is a broadcaster.

    D.He is good at engineering.

  • 24、The icy waters surrounding Antarctica have long been called the Southern Ocean by scientists, the media, and even the US Board on Geographical Names. However, it never received the official recognition it deserved—until now. On June 8, 2021, the National Geographic Society, which has been making maps since 1915, announced that from now on, there would be five oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian. Arctic, and Southern Ocean.

They had been considering making the change for many years. However, it is only recently that the geographers decided that the Southern Ocean was not just an extension of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. It had the unique characteristics required to deserve its own name.

Alex Tait, a geographer, says that the change reflects the Society's desire to draw public attention to protecting the Southern Ocean's unique and fragile marine (海洋的) ecosystem. "We've always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently than other oceans," Tait explains. "This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognize it because of its ecological separation."

The new ocean will include most of the waters around Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude, excluding (排除) the Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea. Unlike the other oceans, whose boundaries are defined (界定) by the surrounding continents, the extent of the Southern Ocean is determined by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) — the Earth's longest and strongest oceanic current.

The ACC was established 34 million years ago when Antarctica broke off from South America, enabling the water to freely flow around Earth's southernmost tip. Its water is colder and less salty than the ocean waters to the north and provides a unique habitat for thousands of species, including whales, penguins, and seals. Extending from the surface to the ocean floor, the ACC also significantly impacts Earth's climate. The powerful current, which draws in water from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, acts like a carrier allocating heat around the planet.

【1】Why is the Southern Ocean recognized?

A.It has no clear land boundaries.

B.It extends into the Pacific Ocean.

    C.It has been separated ecologically.

D.It is home to various marine species.

【2】How is the Southern Ocean defined?

    A.By an oceanic current.

B.By its 60 degrees south latitude.

    C.By its marine ecosystem.

    D.By the surrounding continents.

【3】What does the underlined word "allocating" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Distributing.

    B.Absorbing.

    C.Providing.

    D.Storing.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.The geography has changed sharply

B.Earth now officially has five oceans.

C.A new ocean is appearing on the earth.

D.You have to change your concept about ocean.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I’ve taken up quilting,” my mother announced proudly over the phone one day.

    “That’s great, Mom,” I said.

My 70-year-old mother was undergoing chemotherapy for her cancer. It is a battle that I knew she would someday lose. Maybe soon. It broke my heart for more reasons than one.

“I’m working on a quilt for your sister now,” she said. “Once I’m done, I’ll make one for you.”

    “Thank you.”

She asked about the kids. We chatted about the weather. Then we said our goodbyes. The conversation was short, polite and surface level, as always.

Mom and I had never had what you would call a warm relationship. We never hugged. Never said “I love you”. I didn’t know why. Nothing bad had ever come between us. We just weren’t close the way I was with my kids. For years, I’d longed to break down that wall and to hear those three words. I just didn’t know how to start. We’d been this way for as long as I could remember. Finally, I came up with the idea to schedule regular lunch dates together. Maybe by sharing a meal we might share more of ourselves.

Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly I was on the front line of the COVID-19 battle. No way could I risk infecting Mom, especially with her weak immune system. I settled for daily phone calls instead. It wasn’t quite the bonding experience I’d hoped for. She promised she was working on that quilt for me, though.

My quilt was Mom’s last one.

On a Thursday in June, I got the call from my dad. He was so upset that all I could understand were the words “She’s gone”.

In the weeks that followed, I was torn between thankfulness that she was no longer suffering and an overwhelming desire to see her again, to connect, as if the pandemic had robbed me of that chance. If we’d only had more time. If she’d only said, “I love you.”

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A few months later, I thought of the quilt Mom made for me, and decided to give quilting a try myself.
