  • 21、Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously.Jason was determined not to go against their father's wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like  his father.

“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you've been playing with his new computer.”Jason said,“He told us not to touch it.”

“He won't find out,” Mark said,“I'll just have a quick look and shut it down.”

Mark had been scolded before for touching his father's equipment. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.

It was a strangelooking machine—one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he worked.“It's an experimental model,” his father had explained,“so don't touch it under any circumstances.” But his father's warning only served to make Mark more curious.Without any further thought,Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the center of the screen:“SPACE TRANSPORTER.”

“Yes!” Mark cried excitedly,“It's a computer game.I knew it!Dad's only been pretending to work. He's really been playing games instead.” A new message appeared on the screen:“ENTER NAMES

Mark's fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in both of their names.

    “INPUT ACCEPTED.START TRANSPORT PROGRAM.AUTORETRIEVE INITIATED(自动回收程序已启动).”

The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.

“I think we'd better shut it off,Mark,” Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened.

But his hand never reached the switch.A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow(光芒),until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.

    “TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL.DESTINATION: MARS.RETRIEVE DATE:2025.”

  • 22、Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused.

This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse.

In our teenage years, we all heard “driving is not a right; it’s a privilege.” That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia(痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined.

Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.

The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all. Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us.

【1】The first paragraph is written in order to show_________.

    A. the harm of driving at an old age

    B. the importance of traffic safety

    C. traffic accidents are on the rise

    D. many elderly drivers are careless

【2】The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving __________.

    A. over eighty-five

    B. between sunset and dawn

    C. with the help of voice warning systems

    D. under the influence of prescription drugs

【3】The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.

    A. disappointing B. worrying

    C. touching     D. interesting

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

    A. How to keep old people safe on the road?

    B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?

    C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?

    D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?

  • 23、Are you interested in hi-tech products? Here are some that you might find at the market pretty soon.

    CX-1

Tired of dragging your bag through busy airports? Then you might want to consider CX-1. The smart suitcase uses facial recognizing software to follow its owner as he / she is checking in or heading to the gate. Though CX-1 can only move at a speed of up to seven miles per hour, a tiny tool enables owners to keep track of the suitcase’s location. It is expected to be sold on the market by late 2018.

    Aibo

Sony’s latest version of the Aibo robotic dog is almost as fun as the real thing—but much less work. The pet dog can recognize its owner, obey several commands, and even recall the behavior that pleases its master the most. Aibo can also learn new tricks, take photographs, and over time, develop its own unique personality.

    Forpheus

Forpheus, an “athletic” robot developed by Japanese technology company Omron. It  teaches users how to play ping-pong. The 10-feet-tall machine uses a camera and artificial intelligence to track the ball’s speed and can predict the ball’s direction correctly. The smart Forpheus can also quickly test its player’s abilities and adjust the playing level, making the game fun.

    Black Box VR

Though many people determine to go to the gym once a week, few reach their goal. Black Box VR wants to change that by turning hard exercise into fun video games. Using it, gym users will find themselves fighting enemies, including big creatures—all while getting exercise.

  • 24、   Forty-year-old Hester Grainer estimates spending £300 to £400 each month on clothes, but returning around 80 percent. Actually, we’ve all done it. We buy something we think we like and then change our minds about it. We’re fortunate many companies allow us to easily exchange or refund items. It’s so easy these days that retailers (零售商) are seeing an increase in a new type of shopper: the serial returner.

In the last two years 26 percent of retailers have seen an increase in in-store and online returns—with the number of items being sent back up by 22 percent. It’s a problem for companies. Handling these returns eats into profits. Free delivery for the customer means the company foots the bill. Items may need to be repackaged. They are damaged—making them unfit for resale.

Tony Mannix, CEO of Clipper, a company that handles returned goods for major retailers, said about 5 percent of them end up “being binned”. Sometimes the fast fashion cycle has moved on. By the time the item comes back, it becomes a cut-price item on a reduced-to-clear rail—at further loss to the company.

Some companies are taking action. Four in ten retailers now say they charge for returns to discourage the sending of non-faulty items. Online retail giant Amazon was reported to have started banning customers with too many returned items. This is something, according to a study, over half of UK fashion retailers would consider. And a third of retailers have hiked their prices to cover these returns.

But Vicky Brock, director of data innovation at ReBound Returns, believes this isn’t the best strategy. She says discouraging returns shows a lack of understanding by the retailer. Using data, companies can reduce returns by helping customers choose better. Some companies such as Uniqlo and Asos already provide a suggested size based on the customer’s previous purchases and information on height and weight.

Ultimately, she says, returns are now as much a part of the shopping experience as buying things, and shops need to take this into consideration.

【1】Serial returners refer to those who ________.

A.are easily changing their minds when shopping

B.prefer to exchange purchases with other customers

C.buy items in large quantities but return most of them

D.are unable to resist the urge to buy whatever they like

【2】What usually happens to the returns according to Tony Mannix?

A.Some returns fail to be sold at normal prices.

B.Customers are required to cover the returns.

C.Most of the returned goods are unfit for resale.

D.One fifth of returned items have to be repackaged.

【3】Which view would Vicky Brock agree with?

A.Companies won’t profit from handling returns.

B.Raising prices to cover returns is a wise choice for shops.

C.Offering customers information can discourage returns.

D.Buying and returning are both necessary in shopping.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.

On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on icy steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion (脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend’s station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne’s brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 p.m., he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the car. After that, he was never seen again.

So what really happened to Anne’s husband? During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out (昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a night-shift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets (煎蛋卷), as well as his kindness and good humor.
