21、One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn, they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to force the mice inside the hole to come out. A while later they really saw mice running out, one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean up, they saw two mice squeezing out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts, the mice finally got out. However, after they came out of the hole, they did not run away immediately. Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole. It seemed that one was trying to bite the tail of the other.
Everyone was puzzled, so they stepped nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his tail so that he could pull the blind one with him to escape.
After seeing what happened, everyone was speechless and lost in thought. During the meal time, the group of people sat down in a circle and started to talk about what happened to the two mice.
One serious American official said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of king and guard.” The others thought for a while and said, “That was why!”
A clever French said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of husband and wife.” Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense.
A Japanese said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son.” Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they expressed agreement another time.
At that moment, one Chinese asked, “Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?”
Suddenly, the group looked back at the Chinese and remained speechless. The American official, the French and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered their heads in shame, and did not dare to answer.

22、 Attitude Is Everything Jerry was the kind of guy who was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say.
One day I asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?” Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a bad mood or in a good mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.” Soon thereafter, I left the city and we lost touch. Several years later, I heard Jerry did something surprising: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry survived. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of care, Jerry was released from the hospital with pieces of the bullets(子弹) still in his body.
I saw Jerry six months after the accident. I asked him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or to die. I chose to live. ”“Weren’t you scared?” I asked. Jerry continued, “The paramedics(护理人员) were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But in the emergency room, the facial expressions of the doctors and nurses really scared me. In their eye, I read, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I need to take actions.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Well, a nurse asked me if I was allergic to anything,” said Jerry.“The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Yes! Bullets!’ Over their laughter, I told them, ‘Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’”

23、 The latest thing in architecture is green buildings - covering walls and roofs with a carpet of plants to cool the house, absorb rain and provide a home for wildlife. Many such buildings need complex systems for holding and irrigating the soil, but there is a much easier approach: growing some ivy. Ivy is a group of evergreen climbing plants that are happy in shade or full sun and with most kinds of soil. They don’t need supports as they grow aerial roots that latch onto most things.
Many people use ivy to quickly cover an ugly wall or fence. Besides that, in a mild climate such as the UK’s, an ivy covered wall will slightly warm a room in winter. As well as insulating (隔热), ivy cools a room in summer through shading and by water evaporation from its leaves. “It cools the surrounding air. It's like sweating,” says Tijana Blanuša at the University of Reading, UK, who has examined the insulating effects of climbers. She and her colleagues found that Hedera helix ivy created a larger cooling effect than two other climbers, Boston ivy and climbing hydrangea. This is probably because its leaf cover is so dense, says Blanuša.
Ivy has a reputation for damaging buildings, but according to the UK’s Royal Horticultural Society, this doesn’t usually happen unless they already have cracks - the aerial roots can’t go through sound masonry (砖石结构). The other fear is that it can make walls damp, but Blanuša's study found that ivy raised humidity next to the wall by only a small amount. You do need to be careful, though, as once ivy has been in the ground for a few years, it can grow like crazy. In some parts of the US and Australia, certain kinds of ivy are classed as invasive weeds.
Having had a few battles with ivy plants, I let get out of control. If it reaches the roof, it can get under tiles (瓦片) and block gutters. So don’t plan on covering a wall with ivy unless you are willing to get up a ladder twice a year to cut off any shoots that are approaching danger zones. One option is to paint vulnerable structures with anti-graffiti paint that contains a chemical called silane. This reduces attachment of the plant's aerial roots.
【1】What does the underlined phrase “latch onto” probably mean?
A.Become attached to. B.Push aside.
C.Hold up. D.Fit in with.

C.By blocking light. D.By covering the wall.
【3】What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A.Ivy is popular in the US and Australia.
B.It’s believed that ivy can cause buildings to crack.
C.To a large degree, ivy is to blame for the damp of a house.
D.Ivy can find its way into a house through a hole in the wall.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children — twelve to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off in the village. My parents would bring over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with two meals a day. We stopped the practice of giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family despite the protests (抗议) from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell (困难时期) did not last long, and the children in our family resumed our three meals a day again.
As time went on, the number of customers at Lim's shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father's health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店), the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.
