二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A deal has been signed to turn by-products from a Scottish distillery(酿酒厂)into fuel for cars.

In what is declared to be a world first, the Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh. They plan to use bacteria to feed on the "leftovers" from the whisky(威士忌酒)making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles.

More than 90% of the stuff that comes out of a whisky distillery is not whisky. It is leftovers like draff and pot ales(酒糟)— both produced in the early stages of the process. They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertiliser and cattle feed. Napier University's Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the right bacteria can feed on those by-products to produce butanol—a direct replacement for vehicle fuel. Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent whisky producer Tullibardine have signed an agreement. Together they will apply the process to thousands of tons of the distillery's leftovers.

Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, said "Our partnership with Tullibardine is an important step in the development of a business which combines two important Scottish industries — whisky and renewables. This project shows that creative use of existing technologies can____resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy."

Douglas Ross, managing director of Tullibardine, which spends £250,000 disposing of its by-products every year, said "We are delighted to be partnering Celtic Renewables in this creative business, the obvious benefits of which are environmental. It takes a cost to us and turns it into something that has social as well as commercial value."

The project is being supported by a grant(拨款) from the Scottish government's Zero Waste Scotland initiative. Celtic Renewables said it eventually aimed to build a processing plant in Scotland, with the hope of building an industry that could be worth £60m a year.

1According to the passage, ______will be used to take the place of petrol.

    A. whisky   B. whisky leftovers

    C. butanol   D. draff and pot ales

2How do people deal with whisky leftovers at present?

    A. They throw them away.

    B. They use them to feed people.

  • 22、I was a graduate student in Manhattan having breakfast on my rooftop on Sept. 11, 2001, when I witnessed planes hit the Twin Towers. For months afterwards, I shook with anxiety every morning. Unwilling to medicate, I tried everything else. Mindfulness meditation (冥想) caused panic attacks. Hot yoga built muscle but did nothing for my anxiety. I went to talks by Buddhist monks and meditation teachers hoping to attain inner peace, but in vain. Finally, I attended a SKY Breath Meditation class, which involves a 20-minute breathing regimen (养生之道) in different postures and rhythms. Though I went in skeptical,I came out calm. Two decades later,I never missed a day of my breathing practice, not even when I gave birth.

I’ve also devoted part of my research career to studying the benefits of breathing for mental health and well-being. Seven years after 9/11, I was working with veterans returning from war with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Traditional treatments had failed many of them, so my colleagues and I ran a randomized controlled trial to test the effects of SKY breathing. Compared with the control group, veterans practicing SKY every day for one week saw their anxiety drop to levels typical of the general population.

Even though most did not continue to practice, they maintained the benefits a year later.

Emotions influence your breathing patterns, and changing your breathing can change your emotions. For example, anxiety and anger correspond to an irregular, short, fast breath. Adopting the slower and more regular breathing pattern that corresponds to a calm feeling signals relaxation by activating the vagus nerve (交感神经), slowing heart rate, easing blood pressure, and settling you down. A simple exercise you can try is to close your eyes and breathe out for twice as long as you breathe in. Do this for five minutes in the morning, before a stressful meeting or as you transit from work to home.

【1】Why did the author attend the SKY Breath Meditation class?

    A.To build up muscles.

    B.To relieve inner anxiety.

    C.To learn more about meditation.

    D.To quest for religious belief.

【2】How did the author test the effects of SKY breathing?

A.She worked with healthy veterans returning from war.

B.She chose victims suffering PTSD in the 9/11 incident.

C.She divided the veterans into two groups and compared results.

D.She cooperated with researchers from mindfulness meditation classes.

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.Breathing interacts with emotions.

B.It is harmful to activate the vagus nerve.

C.Breathing out as long as you breathe in is a simple way to follow.

D.Breathing regimen should be carried out for five minutes every morning.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.PTSD: more awareness needed

    B.SKY: better well-being attained

    C.Meditation: an effective treatment

    D.Breath: detailed ways to conduct

  • 24、Self-healing (自愈) “electronic skin” that stretches into a circuit board and attaches to the   human body could be a more environmentally friendly alternative to the current wearable devices, scientists have said.

Some US researchers are developing a thin, skin-like wearable device that they say is fully recyclable and has the capability to repair itself. The electronic skin can perform sensory (传感) tasks such as tracking a daily step count or measuring body temperature and heart rate, and can be shaped to be comfortably worn on any part of the body.

The team said their work could lead to a future where recyclable high-tech skin allows people to collect accurate data about their bodies while cutting down on electronic waste. “Humans will have produced over 60 million tons of discarded (废弃的) smartphones, laptops and other electronics by 2025. Our solution is to start with how we make the device, not when it’s already been thrown away,” said Professor Xiao, leader of the team.

The researchers used a screen printing technique to create a network of liquid metal wires for the circuit. They then used two thin films made of a self-healing material called polyimine to cover the circuit.

The researchers said the resulting device is a little thicker than a Band-Aid which can be applied to treat the wound. It can also stretch by 60 per cent in any direction without messing up the electronics inside. The electronic skin can heal itself in 13 minutes if damaged. The bonds that hold together the polyimine material will begin to grow together to reform a network across the cut, similar to skin healing.

However, the electronic skin is a long way away from being able to compete with the wearable devices in the market. One of the main limitations is that it still needs an external power source to work. “We haven’t realized all of these complex functions yet, but we are marching toward that direction,” Professor Xiao said.

【1】Which of the following is not the function of the skin-like electronic?

    A.Taking body temperature.

    B.Keeping track of everyday steps.

    C.Collecting data on electronic waste.

D.Stretching to fit anywhere on the body.

【2】What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

A.The process of producing the electronic skin.

B.The future the electronic skin may face.

C.Why the electronic skin is so popular.

    D.How the electronic skin works.

【3】What is Professor Xiao’s attitude towards the new style of device?

    A.Confident.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Worried.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Electronic Skin: An Effective Way to Cure Diseases

C.Professor Xiao: Expert Devoted to .Improving Electronics
