四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.

    Music and Hearing

A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.

Musicians hear better, says Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐队). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument (乐器) and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to concentrate on (集中注意力于) certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

    Music and Speaking

Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with patients who have stroke (中风). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate (激活) different parts of the brain, including the damaged parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again.

    Understanding the Results

Music improves concentration, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.

【1】What two groups did Nina Kraus study?

    A.Noisy people and quiet people.

    B.Violinists and other musicians.

    C.Musicians and non-musicians.

D.People with hearing problems and people without hearing problems.

【2】What does they refer to in Paragraph 3?

    A.Orchestra musicians.

    B.Instruments.

    C.The sounds of the orchestra.

    D.Violinists.

【3】How does Gottfried Schlaug help stroke patients speak?

A.By getting them to play an instrument.

B.By asking them to sing words.

    C.By playing music for them.

D.By repeating their names and other information.

【4】Which type of improvement is NOT mentioned in the reading?

    A.Memory.

    B.Sleep.

    C.Listening skills.

    D.Language ability.

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.How to Be a Musician.

    C.The Power of Music.

    D.Trained to Listen.

  • 27、   "I just gave birth to 5 babies last weekend." Isn't that exciting? Oh, you don't believe me? "Okay then, I stole some money from a bank on Saturday night." Now do you believe me? Actually, I hope you don't. April 1st, or April Fool's Day is the day when we play jokes on people. Do you have it in your country?

April Fool's Day started in the sixteenth century in Europe. Before that time, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st. If they were teased, they were called fools.

Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar bottle, so another person could put it in his coffee "by accident". Or someone might change the time on another person's alarm clock so that the person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or maybe a person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked.

After we play the trick, we say "April Fool". Then the poor person realizes he has been fooled. It is generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn't cause any real harm to anyone. Do you have any great jokes to play on anyone? Try it out.

1Before the sixteenth century, New Year's Day was on _______.

C.Someone might change the time on my alarm clock, then I would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned.

D.A person would tell a lie to make me shocked.

3Sometimes people lie to shock someone on_______.
