24、Teenager Jake Deham was skiing with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn’t know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.
Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.
It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm. At home, Jake watched a lot of programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed it up the hill so the wind couldn’t blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous-15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.
But he had to get down the mountain. The TV programmes always said,“ If you are lost, you should find someone else’ s tracks(足迹) through the snow and follow them.” “I wanted to live my life.” remembers Jake.“So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those.” He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. Nine hours after he lost his ski, he found a team of worker who came to save him. He was safe!
His mum was very happy when she heard the news. Amazingly, Jake didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

25、Little Women
Chapter 1 Four sisters
"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled (嘀咕) Jo, lying on the rug (地毯).
"It's so awful to be poor!" agreed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
"It's not right for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and others to have nothing at all," added little Amy, with a sad sniff (轻哼).
"We've got father and mother, and each other," said Beth gently.
The four young faces on which the firelight shone brightened at the cheerful words, but darkened again as Jo said sadly, "We haven't got father, and shall not have him for a long time." She didn't say "perhaps never", but each silently added it, thinking of father far away at the war in the South.
Nobody spoke for a minute; then Meg said: "Mother advised not having any presents this Christmas because it is going to be a hard winter for everyone; and she thinks we shouldn't spend money for pleasure when our men are suffering (受难) in the army. We can't do much, but we can make our little effort. But I am afraid I don't"; Meg shook her head thinking regretfully of all the pretty things she wanted.
"But I don't think the little we should spend would do any good," said Jo. "We've each got a dollar, and that won't help the army much. I agree not to expect anything from mother or you. Let's each buy ourselves what we want, and have a little fun. We work hard to earn it."
"I do, teaching those tiresome children nearly all day when I really want to enjoy myself at home," complained Meg.
"You don't have half such a hard time as I do," said Jo. "How would you like to be shut up for hours with a nervous, fussy old lady, who is never happy, and worries you till you're ready to fly out of the window or cry?"
"It's naughty to fret; but I do think washing dishes and keeping things tidy is the worst work in the world. It makes me cross; and my hands get so stiff to practice my music at all"; Beth looked at her rough hands with a sigh that anyone could hear.
"I don't believe any of you suffer as I do." cried Amy, "for you don't have to go to school with rude girls, who laugh at your lessons or your dresses, and say bad words because your father isn't rich."

27、Dear editor,
I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city every year because there are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀) here.
The peacocks mostly live on the grassland of Dongfeng Square. Visitors usually throw food to them, but they don’t think about at all whether the food is good or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, and some even died eating the bad food given by visitors.
I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the bird, but they don’t realize that they may be doing them harm . Visitors should be told that what they have done is harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped.
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it is our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds to look after them carefully.
Yours,
Wang Yang
