24、 Reading is the key to school success, and it takes practice. An excellent sportsman practises until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators(教育家) call it “automaticity(自动性)”. And the automaticity in reading is necessary and important.
A child learns to read by learning the letters and the meanings of the words. With more and more practice, he stumbles less and less. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meanings of the words, so that he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as the first grade. In a recent study, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount of time that a child spends in reading, not his IQ. It is possible that any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books will reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night and reads at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expressions, with a sense of the meanings of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expressions or meanings, you need more practice.

26、Children should be allowed to get angry. I remember many years ago, when I was visiting my sister in Australia, and I told my oldest son that he wasn’t allowed to do something he really wanted to do. He thought about it for a minute and said, “Mom, I’m very angry with you.” I replied, “That’s OK, darling, it’s what you do with your anger.” I then asked him if he wanted to talk to me about it but he was too angry to talk to me. Then he stormed off(愤然离开).
My sister looked at me surprisingly. Now she has a son the same age as mine and she said angrily, “How can you allow your child to be angry with you? If my son learns that from you, I will never forgive you.”
Then it was hard for me to stay with her, I ended up leaving earlier. Why shouldn’t my son have the right(权利) to tell me when I have made him angry? If he can’t tell me then how can he tell others in his life?
Children need to be able to express how they feel. We need to teach them ways to do this in a right way instead of saying nothing. I want them to tell me. Bottling up anger is not healthy for anyone and usually makes things worse.

27、There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a color film about them, or you can read travel books.
It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的) idea of travels which the writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective( 客观的) information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版) because travel is a very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century.
