  • 22、According to the statistics shared by UNESCO, at least 43% of the total languages that are estimated as being spoken across the world are in danger of extinction. Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. Linguists (语言学家) and researchers believe that by the end of the century, at least half of the world' s languages will have died. This is troublesome, given that cultural identity and languages go hand in hand.

Language activists and people who speak these endangered languages are fighting back tooth and nail. Scientists believe that digitalization might be our only hope to preserve some of these quickly disappearing languages in the online world.

For instance, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago. It is an initiative that boosts “digitally underrepresented” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, yet have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental building block to help preserve them.

There have been countless other projects like this with the same aim. Another is the Rosetta Project, which aims to create a handheld digital library that will carry more than 1,500 languages. It will be appropriately sized to fit nicely into our hands, and will come with around 13,000 pages of information. It will also have a high life expectancy of anywhere between 2,000 and 10,000 years. Initiatives like these have   their primary objective to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.

Countless languages are dying every day, and they will continue to perish as the remaining speakers die. Of course, we cannot merely rely on digitization to deal with worldwide languages loss. However, it is a step in the right direction. These digital tools offer endangered languages an opportunity to bounce back and survive .

【1】What does the data in paragraph 1 mainly show?

    A.Many languages are endangered.

    B.Culture determines language evolution.

C.Human development results in fewer languages.

D.Many linguists attempt to protect threatened languages.

【2】What does Oxford Global Languages try to do?

A.Promote online courses of local languages.

B.Publish paper dictionaries of global languages.

C.Increase dying language speakers to a million.

D.Make certain languages available in digital form.

【3】What can we learn about the digital library to be created by the Rosetta Project?

A.It is portable but has a short life.

B.It is sponsored by Oxford University Press.

C.It provides protection for linguistic diversity.

    D.It contains automatically updated information.

【4】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “perish” in the last paragraph?

    A.Be enriched.

    B.Be lost.

    C.Be acquired.

    D.Be invented.

  • 23、   What’s the point of dining out when we can have whatever meal we want delivered to our homes as we watch movies on our giant flat screen TVs? According to statistics from Technomic, 86% of consumers are using off-premise (营业场所外的) channels at least once a month, and a third of consumers are using it more than they did a year ago.

Most restaurant companies are chasing these trends to keep up with quickly changing consumer demands. Fazoli’s has spent the past two years investing in its drive-through, takeaway, and delivery business, and has launched a new app aimed at making takeaway orders easier. These efforts have paid off so far off-premise sales are up 18.5% over the last year, said Jennifer Crawford, director of off-premise sales at Fazoli’s.

But, she notes that sales are not the only benefit. “The off-premise channel is a great opportunity to connect with a new consumer group,” Crawford said. “Many of our off-premise guests have not dined in a Fazoli’s or experienced our menu. With options like third-party delivery and online ordering, we are able to tap into potential new guests.”

Sales growth and new customer potential are great rewards, to be sure. But that doesn’t mean carrying out off-premise channels comes without challenges. A big one is the lack of control and maintaining the guest relationship. “When a guest dines in, we can provide a level of service that improves the consumer dining experience. The lack of control can extend into the digital experience because sometimes orders are not processed properly in the third-party software due to the drop-down (下拉式的) menus and default (默认) orders.” she said. “Besides, it is difficult to manage during peak hours and maintaining food quality and integrity (完整) during delivery is also tricky with certain dishes.”

Nevertheless, Crawford believes the juice is well worth the squeeze. “Across the industry, dine-in traffic continues to decline or remain flat. If brands are not promoting sales through takeaway and delivery, they are missing out on income.” she said.

    1Why does Fazoli’s invest in off-premise channels?

A.Because it wants to see the potential of its consumers.

B.Because it wants to keep up with the latest technical changes.

C.Because it wants to survive in the changing consumer landscape.

D.Because it wants to connect with its new consumers.

2We can know from Paragraph 4 that _______.

A.third-party apps may not offer as good an experience of ordering as restaurants

B.third-party apps may get out of control when used incorrectly

C.It makes no difference to restaurants whether it is the peak time or not.

D.food quality and integrity can be guaranteed during delivery.

    3What is Crawford’s attitude towards off-premise channels?

    A.Cautious B.Doubtful C.Favorable D.Worried

4What is the text mainly about?

    A.Off-premise channels still need improving.

B.Restaurants are having difficulty in attracting their consumers.

C.Off-premise channels create more difficulties than opportunities.

D.Restaurants are adapting to the rise of takeaway using off-premise channels.

  • 24、When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.

Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.

Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”

She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.

Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.

“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian rip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhavan orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.

1When hearing the news that her daughter would go on a school trip to Ecuador, Armato was _______.

    A. proud and happy

    B. supportive but concerned

    C. fearful and nervous

    D. excited but puzzled

2The underlined phrase “from scratch” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.

    A. having great help

    B. using high technology

    C. ending up in failure

    D. starting from the beginning

3What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Volunteering helps students grow and develop.

    B. School trips make parents worried about their children.

    C. Ecuador is the most attractive travel destination in the world.

    D. Brave Alexia dreams to work in Ecuador one day.
