二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets.

This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it is not unusual for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children.

There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies — a disease with no known cure.

Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat, and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone's pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.

Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it's time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say, “keep cutting!”

【1】The doggy parlors are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show ________.

    A. where Americans keep their pets

    B. what costly lives the pets are living

    C. why children love their pets so much

    D. how much pets depend on their masters

【2】In the second paragraph "to get hot under the collar" probably means ________.

    A. getting quite hot   B. feeling overwhelmingly angry

    C. becoming excited    D. receiving a fashionable shirt

【3】According to the author, in which field can animals be most useful?

    A. Pet.    B. Food.  C. Medicine.    D. Sports.

    【4】What is author’s attitude towards pets-raising?

    A. Pitiful.  B. Neutral.    C. Opposed.    D. Supportive.

  • 22、It was 3: 45 in the morning when the vote was finally taken. After six months of arguing and final 16 hours of hot parliamentary debates, Australia's Northern Territory became the first legal authority in the world to allow doctors to take the lives of incurably ill patients who wish to die. The measure passed by the convincing vote of 15 to 10. Almost immediately word flashed on the Internet and was picked up, half a world away, by John Hofsess, executive director of the Right to Die Society of Canada. He sent it on via the group's on-line service, Death NET. Says Hofsess: We posted bulletins all day long, because of course this isn't just something that happened in Australia. It's world history.

The full import may take a while to sink in. The NT Rights of the Terminally Ill law has left physicians and citizens alike trying to deal with its moral and practical implications. Some have breathed sighs of relief, others, including churches, right-to-life groups and the Australian Medical Association, bitterly attacked the bill and the haste of its passage. But the tide is unlikely to turn back. In Australia-where an aging population, life-extending technology and changing community attitudes have all played their part-other states are going to consider making a similar law to deal with euthanasia(安乐死). In the US and Canada, where the right-to-die movement is gathering strength, observers are waiting for the dominoes to start falling.

Under the new Northern Territory law, an adult patient can request death-probably by a deadly injection or pill-to put an end to suffering. The patient must be diagnosed as terminally ill by two doctors. After a cooling off period of seven days, the patient can sign a certificate of request. After 48 hours the wish for death can be met. For Lloyd Nickson, a 54-year-old Darwin resident suffering from lung cancer, the NT Rights of Terminally Ill law means he can get on with living without the haunting fear of his suffering: a terrifying death from his breathing condition. I'm not afraid of dying from a spiritual point of view, but what I was afraid of was how I'd go, because I've watched people die in the hospital fighting for oxygen and clawing at their masks, he says.

【1】From the second paragraph we learn that ________.

    A. the objection to euthanasia is slow to come in other countries

    B. physicians and citizens share the same view on euthanasia

    C. changing technology is chiefly responsible for the hasty passage of the law

    D. it takes time to realize the significance of the law's passage

【2】When the author says that observers are waiting for the dominoes to start falling, he means ________.

    A. observers are taking a wait-and-see attitude towards the future of euthanasia

    B. similar bills are likely to be passed in the US, Canada and other countries

    C. observers are waiting to see the result of the game of dominoes

D.the effect-taking process of the passed bill may finally come to a stop

【3】When Lloyd Nickson dies, he will ________.

    A. face his death with calm characteristic of euthanasia

    B. experience the suffering of a lung cancer patient

    C. have an intense fear of terrible suffering

    D. undergo a cooling off period of seven days

【4】The author's attitude towards euthanasia seems to be that of ________.

    A. opposition  B. suspicion

    C. approval  D. indifference

  • 23、A college student has turned the act of telling someone off into an art form. Lama Ali, who attend school in Virginia, had three final assignments due on the same day for her fashion drawing class. Exhausted after working on painting for seven hours straight, the 20-year-old decided to include a message in American Sign Language to her professor:

When your drawing teacher assigns 3 finals so you secretly write you got me fucked up in sign language on your final piece.

    ——Shawty Arabia(@LemAli23) December 7,2016

You got me fucked up, a bunch of hands in the painting spell out in ASL, in a form of sign known as finger spelling(聋哑字母表), which uses signs for each letter, rather than for the words themselves.

Honestly the idea just came to me while I was finishing up the piece, Ali told The Huffington Post. I was looking at it and thought, This could really use something else. And then the idea struck me: Why not secretly express how I was feeling while struggling at the library at 4 a. m.?

Once the fashion design major had finished her masterpiece, she posted it to Twitter on Dec. 7, where it has received over 113,000likes and 48,000 retweets (转发).

Ali, who does not know ASL, told HuffPost she taught herself a little bit just for this particular assignment.

You know its bad when you have to learn a whole other language to express how done you are, she said. I remembered seeing a post on Tumblr long ago with a similar phrase by the post, she decided to look up the letters in ASL to spell out the message. Someone on Twitter even did the good work of circling them in the painting.

Ali told HuffPost that when she finally presented the piece to her professor in her class, he absolutely loved it.

Most of my friends in class actually knew about the secret message, so I was really surprised when no one laughed or blew my cover during critique(评论). She also admits that her professor still doesnt know about the message, despite her post getting so much attention.

【1】Which of the following is closest in meaning to You got me fucked up?

    A. I was greatly astonished.

    B. You really worn me out.

    C. I felt much appreciated.

    D. You left me impressed.

【2】What was it that gave Ali the inspiration to use ASL to express her feeling?

    A. Her professors assignment.

    B. Being too exhausted.

    C. A post on Tumblr with ASL.

    D. Her classmates encouragement.

【3】Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. Her professor is not so clever as her classmates.

    B. Her professor pretended not to understand.

    C. Her professor is still in the dark about the message.

    D. Her professor had been informed by her classmates.

【4】How did Ali know about American Sign Language?

    A. She learned it in middle school.

    B. She majored in it at college.

    C. She taught herself when prepared for the assignment.

    D. Someone taught her on Twitter.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was young, the kitchen had an invisible“stop" sign put there by my mom. “No, you cannot enter here!” she always said to me. Well, I really don’t blame her as it is no place for kids.

I was just left outside in admiration, looking at what wonders the kitchen held. A few years passed by and I became very interested in food, both eating and preparing it. However, the kitchen was still out of bounds so I couldn’t experiment with cooking. But they couldn’t stop me forever now, could they?

It was early morning. Mom had gone for grocery shopping and no one else was at home. Time to strike! I walked through the dining room and there was the kitchen in front of me!

I stepped inside and took in the sight in front of me—cabinets (储藏柜 ) lining a wall, the oven (炉子) occupying the central place of another wall, the dishes sparkling like diamonds. I had seen it from outside but this time it was up close. As I hadn’t had breakfast, I decided to begin my first experience as a cook by making an omelette (煎蛋) . Sure I had seen Mom do it, so how could it be hard?

I searched the cabinets and finally found some eggs and onions. I knew the basics, so I began the work. I washed an onion first and then chopped it. Then came the egg. It took me two or three attempts to crack one open and into the bowl. I put the onion and some salt in the bowl too and mixed them. After that, I lighted the stove and put the frying pan on it and poured some oil in it... and poured some on the floor too, accidentally, of course! Till the pouring of the mixture into the pan, everything was going perfect—then I wondered what was used for turning the egg upside down in the pan.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Soon, I was running all over the kitchen, searching for the cooking spoon.
