21、American kids are taking more tests than ever before, and they're stressed out. Is help on the way? Just the sight of a test booklet makes some kids sweat. For others, it is a blank answer sheet. Then there are the dreaded words, "Take out your Number 2 pencil." All these fill 10-year-old Chelsea Logo with fear. "I start to tap my pencil on the desk," says the fifth grader from Toluca Lake Elementary, near Los Angeles, California. "Then I feel the butterflies in my stomach."
Chelsea is not alone. In a recent survey by Kids Health£.org, more than 70% of kids aged 9 to 13 said they worry about tests. It's no wonder. Across the United States, public schools give more than 250 million standardized tests each year.
Why do kids have to take so many tests? The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law requires that students in grades 3 through 8 be tested each year. The law's goal is for all students to be at grade level by 2014. Students must pass the tests and meet other requirements or their schools may be shut down.
The U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan wants to change NCLB. But that doesn't mean he favors getting rid of tests. Duncan believes tests should be used mainly to evaluate kids' strengths and weaknesses. Tests, Duncan says, should not be used to punish kids or their schools for failure. "The goal is to focus on great teaching and learning," Duncan said.
Under NCLB, each state sets its own standards for students to meet. The result, Duncan says, is that states are making the tests easier. To fix this problem, 48 states are now working together to create common standards. "I want to set a high bar for kids, " Duncan says, "so they'll be in great shape to achieve their dreams."
Like them or not, tests are here to stay. So how can you handle test nerves? Schools are teaching students to relax through. deep breathing. and stretching (伸展运动) . In Oakland, California, Principal Zarina Ahmad of Piedmont Avenue Elementary leads her students in a cheer to get them excited about learning.
"Kids are under high pressure," says Ahmad. "There has to be time for kids to be kids. Still, we need tests to help us assess what students have yet to learn."

22、New research shows that the healthy brain may hold memories which we don’t even remember. In The Journal of Neuroscience, experts report that the brain might hold more memories than people realize, but that restoring those memories can be tricky.
Memory Check
First, participants saw a list of 120 real words mixed with 80 nonsense words. Next, they saw another word list and tried to remember which words had been on the first list. Meanwhile, their brains were scanned with functional magnetic resonance(核磁共振) imaging.
While participants reviewed the second word list, their brain scans showed more activity in a certain brain area -- the posterior(后部的) median temporal lobe(脑叶) -- when they saw words that had been on the first word list.
But participants didn’t always remember that they’d seen those words before. Sometimes, theygoofedand said they hadn’t seen those words before. In other words, the posterior median temporal lobe was more sensitive to memory than participants’ consciousness, the researchers note.
“Album”of Memories
Another part of the median temporal lobe also attracted the scientists’ attention. The anterior(前面的)median temporal lobe showed more activity when participants thought they were seeing a new word, the study shows.
So, why did participants sometimes mess up their memory recall? It might be that two parts of their brain -- the posterior and anterior median temporal lobes -- might be dueling(决斗) for the upper hand in deciding what actually happened in the past, the study notes.
In other words, memories might have a photo album in the brain, but sometimes we forget what’s on all of the photo album’s pages.
【1】A person sometimes has difficulty recalling because .
A. he is unconscious when he gets his memories
B. he forgets what is on the pages of the photo album
C. there are two parts in his brain dueling for the upper advantage
D. the anterior median temporal lobe is more active than the posterior
【2】According to the passage the researchers are .
A. studying how a person remembers things
B. studying a magazine The Journal of Neuroscience
C. examining posterior and anterior median temporal lobes
D. doing experiments to find out what disturbs a person’s memory
【3】What did the experts discover when the participants saw the words on the first word list appear on the second word list?
A. The instrument worked faster.
B. The participants were more conscious.
C. The posterior median temporal lobe was more active.
D. The anterior median temporal lobe was more active.
【4】The underlined wordgoofedin the fourth paragraph means .
A. made a mess of B. made an answer for
C. made out of D. made the best of
23、Talking to someone on a train, bus, or subway can be risky yet exciting, as you never know when they're going to get off. Here are some useful tips.
Make eye contact. Making brief eye contact can show the person that you're interested and help you judge whether they are interested in you. 【1】 If they look away quickly or appear disinterested, it's probably best not to approach.
【2】 If the person looks at you once more, this is a good sign that they notice you and want to interact with you. When making eye contact, keep your facial expression light and friendly, rather than straight and serious.
Smile at them. If you are successful, smile at the person. A small but genuine smile makes you appear interested, friendly, and approachable. If the other person smiles back, you’re likely in luck in getting them to talk to you.
Use open body language. 【3】 Do this by keeping your arms uncrossed. Stand or sit up straight and show good posture (姿势).
【4】 Once you’ve read the other person to see if they’re interested in conversing (交谈), make a move. If you're far away, move closer. You should keep a comfortable distance where you can hear each other yet not feel awkward if the conversation doesn't work out. Find a seat near them, yet don't crowd them.
If they're standing, stand near enough to them to be able to speak with them, but don't get too close for comfort. If there's a seat next to them, ask, “May I sit here?" Try not to be nervous. Many people are just as excited to chat with new people as you are. If they engage, then keep it up! 【5】
A.Notice how they respond.
B.Approach the person to start talking to them.
C.As you can see, your body language speaks for itself.
D.Try to make eye contact again after about 30 seconds.
E.Eye contact is the act of looking into someone's eyes.
F.Make a point to appear open, comfortable, and available.
G.You'll meet some people and perhaps even make some friends.
24、 Corn is the most dominant agricultural product in the U.S., and perhaps the world. 【1】 But when their crops failed, the settlers of the New World decide to mix corn into their agricultural efforts. Fast-forward a couple of hundred years, and this tall grass now covers 90 million acres of land in America alone and accounts for some 10% of total crop production globally.
【2】 One is that growing corn generates far more calories per unit of land than nearly any other crop. Another key factor was that much more ammonium nitrate (硝酸铵), a kind of explosive, was left after World War Ⅱ. Agriculture scientists successfully repurposed it into a cheap form of fertilizer. This allowed corn to be grown in the same fields year after year, without reducing the nitrogen in the soil. 【3】 We can eat it, process it into syrup, fuel our cars with it and feed it to our animals.
The dominance of corn, however, has negative effect. Currently, we use approximately 40% of corn grown in the U.S. to create ethanol (乙醇) and 36% to feed animals. 【4】 Ethanol has a low “energy-returned-on-energy-invested” ratio (比率), meaning we must put a large amount of energy into producing it. An indirect negative effect of the dominance of corn has been its help in fueling explosive growth in the livestock industry.
【5】 Traditional monoculture farming, which means growing one type of crop continuously, worsens soil and often leads to harmful runoff into streams and rivers. Farmers themselves can change from monoculture practices to those that include a wider variety of species. As consumers, we can buy organic corn. Though not absolutely eco-friendly, organic agriculture is miles ahead of traditional farming.
A.Corn helped newcomers root in the new land.
B.Many reasons account for the dominance of corn.
C.Additionally, corn has incredibly many different uses.
D.Even just growing corn is far from environmentally friendly.
E.Unfortunately, both uses cause great damage to the environment.
F.These days about 80% of the world’s farmland is for animal production.
G.Originally grown in Central America, European explorers initially avoided it.
