  • 21、My head was so full of digital noise that it felt like my brain was about to blow a fuse (导火线). I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised by a brain that simply could not sit still.

So, this year I committed myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain.

My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here’s how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction each day. It was something I hadn’t done in years and it was scary how difficult it was.

In his book, The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the urge to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Nikki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how investing in a safe to lock away her family’s devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the tram, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks.

By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration, knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves.

  • 22、   We all should let the sunshine in as much as possible not just because it makes us feel good. Exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D in our skin. This is why we call vitamin D the "sunshine vitamin”.

Vitamin D is good for everybody. In fact, research shows this "sunshine vitamin" could help women with breast cancer live longer.

Breast cancer patients who have high blood levels of vitamin D have a better prognosis(预后)than women who don't. A prognosis is how quickly a doctor expects a patient to recover or how long a doctor expects a patient to live.

Researchers found that these women had less aggressive cancers. They were also 30 percent less likely to die from the cancer or to get it again.

Researcher Song Yao led the study for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He said the study showed that high vitamin D levels improved the patients' prognosis no matter what type or how advanced their cancer was.

Besides fighting breast cancer, vitamin D helps the body in other ways. Most importantly, vitamin D controls how the body absorbs calcium(钙).It also makes sure the body's immune(免疫的)system works normally.

Several studies show that vitamin D also strengthens the immune system and helps the body fight disease. Vitamin D may help reduce your risk of developing heart disease, according to a 2008 study published in the journal Circulation. And it may also help protect you against getting the flu. Other studies have shown that vitamin D might help people suffering from depression.

Factors in the environment may limit our exposure to sunlight and, therefore, vitamin D. These factors include pollution, using too much sunscreen, spending too much time inside and living in areas with little sunlight.

So if you can't get enough sunshine, eat foods that are rich in vitamin D egg yolks, cheese and fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna or mackerel.

How much vitamin D you need is a much-debated topic. The best way to know if you need more vitamin D is to get tested by a doctor.

1Which of the following is TRUE for the women with high blood levels of vitamin D according to the research?

A.They can recover from cancer earlier.

B.They may never get cancer again.

C.They may have less aggressive breast cancers.

D.They may live longer with it than women without.

2The benefits of vitamin D are not,

    A.strengthening the immune system

    B.killing cancer cells

    C.promoting the absorption of calcium

    D.protecting against getting the flu

3What can people do to get more vitamin D?

A.Eat more food and do more exercise.

B.Get exposure to more sunlight and eat foods rich in it.

C.Drink more water and eat more foods rich in it.

D.Eat more food and keep positive.

4How does the author support the theme of the passage?

    A.By providing research results.

    B.By stating arguments.

    C.By explaining statistical data.

    D.By giving examples.

  • 23、   I was on vacation with my husband, my brother, his wife and daughter. We were not familiar with the area and jumped onto a bus, thinking it would be a nice way to see the downtown’s old town area. Well, until visiting with the bus driver, we found out we were on the neighborhood route which picks up school children and delivers to various neighborhood places, with a route of well over about 2 hours. That was a surprise and a concern because we had parked our vehicle in a timed parking area and it was going to end.

We shared this with the bus driver only to let her know we were not from the area and apologized for getting on her bus in error. Then she surprised us further saying, “I get off shift after a few more blocks, and if you don't mind a tight squeeze in my company car, I'd be happy to take you back to your vehicle before the time is over.” The bus driver received permission from her manager, so we gratefully said yes to her offer.

She went out of her way to take us back to our vehicle after her shift was over and it wasn't on her route to home either. We were touched and grateful for her kindness and thoughtfulness. In return because she had shared some of her concerns about the school-age children she sometimes had on the bus route, I shared with her a little tip on how to quiet the children with an energetic technique that would make the ride safer for them as well as for her. She was so grateful. It was a wonderful exchange of kindness!

【1】What was wrong with the author and her family ?

A.They got on a wrong bus.

    B.They would lose their car.

C.They couldn't drive their own car.

    A.The timed parking area.

    B.The family's concern.

    C.The vehicle parked there.

    D.The time limit for parking

【3】What was the driver going to do after she knew the family’s trouble?

    A.Invite them to her home.

    B.Ask her manager for help.

C.Drive them to where they parked.

D.Get off shift earlier than usual.

【4】What did the author do to repay the driver’s kindness?

A.She taught her how to send children to school.

B.She taught her how to calm down children.

C.She gave her a tip for her good service.

D.She helped make her ride comfortable and safe.

  • 24、The ruins of a huge Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR, according to the National Geographic on Thursday.

This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey landscapes in 3D by reflecting laser pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological sites (考古遗址), as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has been the activator (催化剂) of many discoveries in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did.

This large lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna—known for their temples and pyramids—but shows that these famous heritage areas are the tip of the iceberg of this lost urban network.

Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, more than 60,000 human-made features—homes, canals, highways, some of which can even reach the modernized standard—have been identified by an international cooperation of researchers headed by the PACUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya empire.

These ancient peoples obviously established these imaginative cultures based on their known relics, but the new research has shown that the scale of this lost society is far beyond what experts had imagined. The findings will be explored in an hour-long documentary called Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings, premiering (首映) Tuesday, February 6 on the National Geographic Channel.

“There are entire cities we didn’t know about now showing up in the survey data,” said Francisco Belli, one of the lead archeologists on the project. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities there that we don’t know about, and we will push the frontiers,” he added.

【1】What can we know about LiDAR?

    A.It’s a breakthrough in archeology.

B.It’s major equipment in air forces.

C.It was first used in discovering a Maya city.

D.It’s a remote sensing technique using laser pulses.

【2】What does the underlined word “Those” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The jungles of the Reserve.

B.The outlines of the Maya empire.

    C.The researchers of the organization.

D.The man-made projects of the Reserve.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe the Maya empire?

    A.Famous and dangerous.

    B.Vast and highly developed.

    C.Mountainous and aggressive.

    D.Enormous and traditional.

【4】What do archeologists hope to do next?

    A.Restudy the history of Maya.

B.Use the LiDAR sensors as usual.

    C.Continue to explore the unknown.

    D.Study the documentary more carefully.
