二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.

School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when hunting season began. I was told they were also frequently absent in late October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines” just meant to have a good time.

But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seems reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.

I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day. I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door.

He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine.

When he spoke, he said simply, without accusation, “You had nothing to say to them.”

“You had nothing to say to them.” he repeated, “No wonder they are bored. Why not get to the meat of literature and stop talking about symbolism. Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior?” We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful, yet, warm, teacher.

As the year progressed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings and their motivations. He helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths. In short, he made a teacher of me by teaching me the reality of Emerson’s words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil!”

Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now.

1It can be inferred from the story that in 1974 ________.

D.The challenging but unforgettable start of my teaching career

  • 22、Certainly, a well-rounded education is the foundation from which all of us spring forth. I am grateful to the many incredible teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for everlasting learning!

I have also been honored to have the most amazing teachers in all of my children’ s lives. These are extraordinary people who not only teach our children, but love them, challenge them, and provide an environment where a child learns how to learn.

But, sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something. I watched the movie Easy A with my older daughter. The main character’ s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their daughter and developed her ability to handle her own problems.

There was a scene where the mother was speaking to the younger child and he announced that he received an A” on his spelling test. She replied, That’s great, honey, but everything has spell check these days. ”It was funny but TRUE!I don’t mean that we shouldn’t teach our children how to spell, but maybe some of our time should be spent educating them about the dangers of posting things on Facebook.

Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works— the credit card isn’t free money— you will have to pay it back at sometime. Oh, and get this—they charge you for borrowing that money. Perhaps, we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships. I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another.

Choosing a career is a daunting task. My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major twice. It’s not that she didn’t know what she wanted to do. What she wanted to do”and the degree she chose did not match.

I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven’t seen what it looks like in the real world. Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories. Maybe if we spent some time exposing them to real life experience— maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high school that give them a feel’ for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared. I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion.

【1Why does the author mention the movie Easy A?

    A. To prove the importance of book learning.

    B. To show the parents’ ignorance of spelling.

    C. To lead to the topic he is going to talk about.

    D. To share with the readers his feeling about the movie.

    【2】The author believes that .

    A. students need to focus on the skills in learning

    B. parents and school should be consistent in education

    C. his daughter is smart enough to make her own choice

    D. courses in areas of interest in high schools will benefit students

【3The underlined word daunting” in Paragraph 6 probably means

    A. specific  B. discouraging

    C. rewarding  D. regular

【4What is mainly discussed in the passage?

    A. Schools should prepare students for the real life.

    B. What students learn in school should be practiced in life.

    C. Life experience is of greater importance than school education.

    D. Students should spend more time discussing practical problems.

  • 23、The ocean is full of lessons. 【1】

If you are able to spend time at a beach in summer and go for a swim, you'll find yourself facing a number of choices when waves arrive. Challenges are often described as coming in "waves". 【2】 How do you handle waves? You could try one of these possible responses:

【3】 Waves will eventually crash. and it's just what they do. Show your inner strength by standing right in that moment, steeling yourself to resist the impact. Feel how much your legs and muscles offer support with each passing wave, no matter how powerful it is. You can't control the sea, but you can place yourself strongly within it.

Get knocked over—and come up laughing. I've taught my 9-year-old son the same beach safety rule my mother taught me: If you get knocked over by a wave, find the sandy bottom with your feet so you can push off and break through the water's surface. Thus you can experience the joy of getting knocked down and finding your way back up again. 【4】

Ride the waves. When swimming in deep water, face what's coming and reflect on what's behind. When you turn landward and ride the waves toward the shore, that same sort of waves that may have knocked you down, or that you steeled yourself against, can now carry you forward. 【5】 So set aside the resistance and accept the help of each wave as it comes.

A.Stand up to the crashing surf

B.Waves will carry you to where you want to go

C.Yet what I appreciate is how it benefits mankind.

D.So the options reflect our decision-making powers in life.

E.Of course, you have to go swimming when the sea is still.

F.Among the most important, for me, are those from waves.

G.You may also realize that you can handle something a little stronger than you.

  • 24、Most Impressive Ways to Get from Place to Place

    Horse Caravan (马车)

Go a bit old-school with a horse caravan in Ireland. While riding a horse may not offer much in the way of impressiveness, how about getting a horse to a carriage that includes cooking and sleeping areas? That sounds a bit more remarkable. Plus, the horse-drawn carriages allow a fresh perspective on the countryside and beaches.

    Terra Bus

Made in Calgary, only roughly 20 of these Terra Bus Ice Explorer all-terrain vehicles exist and they almost all serve the Icefields Parkway and the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper, Canada. The Terra Bus Ice Explorer can handle 56 passengers and nearly any sort of ice, mud, sand, snow and rock the Canadian Rocky Mountains have to offer.

    The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator (自动扶梯)

If this Hong Kong escalator system didn't exist, you'd have all sorts of stairs to deal with to climb between the western and central Hong Kong districts. This system of 20 escalators, built in 1993, combines to become the longest outdoor covered escalator in the world, running a total length of 2,624 feet and rising 442 feet in the process. From end to encl it's a ride lasting 20 minutes.

    Symphony of the Seas

At 1, 181 feet in length and a gross tonnage of 228, 000, the Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. The steel ship features seven distinct on-board neighborhoods, surfing, ziplining, ice-skating, 3D movies and pools. Symphony is powered by solar energy.

【1】What can you do on Horse Caravan?

    A.Cook meals.

    B.Watch movies.

    C.Take an escalator.

    D.Admire great mountains.

【2】What is Terra Bus intended for?

    A.Beach views.

    B.In-city transportation.

    C.On-board entertainments.

    D.Complex road conditions.

【3】Which of the following is in Hong Kong?

    C.The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator.

    D.Symphony of the Seas.
