二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I spent most my twenties working for the National Park Service, and I lived a wide variety of government housing, including several shabby but appealing old houses where the wild creatures outnumbered humans. Sometimes I wondered, lying awake at night, how many hearts beat inside those walls. With all that lovely national park habitat protected for their use, why did the animals need to live in my house?

My latest essay “The indoor wilds at outdoor parks,” revisits my experiences with wild (non-human!) roommates and officemates in Rocky Mountain National Park. At first, they were considered annoying but not dangerous. Attitudes changed dramatically when hantavirus (汉他病毒) came on the scene, and suddenly those cute, non-housebroken deer mice became a threat. When I moved on to Canyonlands National Park, I found that every effort had been made to seal off my house from four-footed intruders. These efforts mostly worked and later employees moved into new housing. But somehow a rat still managed to chew its way through the floor and drown itself in my toilet. I’m not even going to get started about my coworkers, experiences with other much scarier animals.

The Beaver Meadows Vistor Center in the story was designed by Tailiesin Associated Architects, Frank Lloyed Wright’s firm, after Wright’s death. Working there, I always thought the building was strange. I recently revisited the building while researching a children’s book I am writing about the park. I think I get it now, at least a little.

1What does the underlined word “their” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. Some park visitors’.   B. Endangered animals’.

    C. The author’s coworkers’.   D. The author’s wild roommates’.

2Why did people show a change in attitude towards deer mice?

    A. Because a virus was spreading.   B. Because people were hurt by them.

    C. Because people saw a really cute one.   D. Because they protected people’s houses.

3What can we infer about the living conditions of the author’s coworkers?

    A. They were unknown to the author.   B. They were acceptable to the author.

    C. They were no better than the author’s.   D. They were much better than the author’s.

4After visiting the Beaver Meadows Vistor Center again, the author ________.

    A. could appreciate it better   B. finished a children’s book

    C. did research on national parks   D. knew it was designed by Wright

  • 23、One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick’s life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2021.

But after the operation, Susan burst into tears for a different reason: across the cut on their newborn son’s back was a sweet winter scene hand-drawn on his bandages.

“There were rolling hills of snow, a pine tree and a snowman with a hat and broom,” she recalled. “It was extremely touching and comforting to know that somebody had taken the time to do that for my family. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Susan soon learned the artist was her son’s surgeon, Robert Parry, who discovered another way to use his hands in the mid-1980s during his internship at a children’s medical center, where he saw one of his colleagues cutout heart and shark shapes to decorate children’s bandages.

“My first reaction was, ‘What is he doing? Hey, that’s kind of neat.’ ” Parry recalled. I especially liked the reactions of the parents and the patients when they saw his artwork The smiles took everyone’s attention from the surgery. Then I decided to follow suit”.

Parry quickly graduated from his early hearts and sharks, and started to surprise families with drawings that captured young patients’ personalities. From Snoopy to Spider-Man and bears to butterflies, there isn’t much he hasn’t drawn. Most kids want superheroes, sports team logos or princesses, while babies often receive scenes with flowers, trees and sea creatures. During the last 30 years, Parry estimates he has left examples of his handiwork over the stitches (伤口缝线) of more than 10,000 children.

“During a time of stress for families, it’s nice to be able to help them smile and laugh,” Parry said. “This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it.”

For Parry, the reward is knowing he hopefully made a difference in a child’s life, and except for his drawing son bandages, “they can go on and live their lives and never know I was in it.” he said.

He’s not ready to retire, but he’s found a new hobby to keep his hands skillful in the years to come. “I’ve taken up knitting,” Parry said. “Hats, sweaters, gloves—I enjoy it all. But mostly, I enjoy giving everything away.”

【1】How did Parry get the idea of decorating children’s bandages?

A.He was motivated by his patients.

B.He was inspired by his colleague.

C.He was required to learn the skill during his internship.

D.He was encouraged by Susan to show his genius for art.

【2】Parry’s artworks during the last 30 years show that he ______.

A.devoted himself more to art than to medicine

B.knew more about his patients than their parents

C.took into consideration the tastes of individual patients

D.created a large number of works beyond his expectations

【3】What does Parry expect to achieve with his artworks?

A.To get a recognition from his supervisors.

B.To make a difference in his dull medical career.

C.To lift the spirits of his patients and their parents.

D.To make his patients’ parents see a glimmer of hope.

【4】What can we learn about Parry from the last paragraph of the passage?

A.He is eager to show others his new skills.

B.He enjoys trying new ways to help others.

C.He is looking forward to life after retirement.

D.He is more interested in knitting than drawing.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

You never know where life will lead you. When I was a young boy. I found myself constantly overshadowed by my elder sister, Becky. It was not her intention to outshine me, nor did she make any effort to do so. However, with Becky exceling both academically and athletically, it was only natural that her accomplishments got all the attention, while my own achievements went unnoticed. Being the younger brother of someone who effortlessly excelled in all areas of life proved to be a big challenge, as I struggled to find my own identity under her brilliance.

Becky’s talent in swimming was particularly noteworthy and she was recognized as the finest swimmer in our province. Yet, the swimming pool never attracted me. Even as a child, I developed a dislike for swimming after a rather unpleasant experience of water entering my nose. Swimming was not for me.

However, fate had its own way of transforming my life. One day, I fell off my skateboard and broke my leg so badly that the doctors said I could never really engage in the sport again. They said there was only one exercise that would be good for me-swimming!

Reluctantly, I decided to give swimming a try. At first, it was a struggle. I had a lot of fear and anxiety about putting my face in the water, fearing a repeal of the incident that had scarred me as a child. But little by little, with the support and guidance of my sister, I slowly overcame my fear and learned to enjoy swimming.

As I spent more time in the water, I realized that swimming wasn’t just exercise; it was a way to challenge myself and push my limits. I began to set goals for myself, starting with simple tasks like swimming a certain distance without stopping, and gradually progressing to more advanced techniques. With each achievement, my confidence grew, and I found myself becoming more comfortable in the water.

Swimming also brought me closer to Becky. We spent hours together at the pool, motivating and encouraging each other. She became my trainer, helping me improve my technique and providing me with valuable advice. It was through swimming that we developed a deeper bond as siblings (兄弟姐妹).

    注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;(2)开头已给出。

As the years went by, I started participating in local swimming competitions.

Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the twist of fate that led me to professional swimming.
