21、 (CNN) — No matter how you like your hot dogs prepared, with mustard (芥末酱), ketchup or chili, we can all agree on one thing — hot dogs have become part of American culture. And this year, more than ever, hot dogs are red hot; in March zksq, the data firm IRI reported that sales were up by as much as 127% ,and that was well before grilling season started. But while hot dogs may feel “all-American,” they’re something else.
Also known as the frankfurter (法兰克福熏肠), this specific style of cased sausage was originally thought to be from the town of Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany, but hot dog historians argue that sausage culture, native to Eastern Europe and, particularly Germany, has no specific town of origin.
“A good number of the early Germans came from the Palatines, which is a general area surrounding the actual city of Frankfurt, explains Dr. Bruce Kraig at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Frankfurt, Kraig said, refers to the region of origin, though the actual food does not necessarily come from Frankfurt itself.
The traditional German hot dog, when it arrived in the United States, was a mixture of both pork and beef; the all-beef hot dog, as we now know, takes its roots from Jewish-American butchers, who, due to Jewish restrictions in food choice, chose not to use pork in their meat mixture.
Brought over by German immigrants in the mid-1800s, hot dogs began their path into the American time spirit in New York City. Hot dog carts (手推车), where they were a natural fit for the sandwich-loving New Yorkers, who already preferred to eat on the go, were easy to spot on the street. “Germans have sausage culture, so they eat sausage from butcher shops,” Kraig said. “The moment they appeared with the first German immigrants, Americans became crazy with the German idea of sausage eating on the street.”

22、Resorts of every kind have sprung up to cater to the Englishman^ need to spend a part of the year, however briefly, by the seaside. No town in Britain is more than eighty miles from the sea and there are seaside resorts all round the coast. On a summer Sunday most of the roads that lead to the sea axe congested with cars full of people eager to get a breath of sea air. In the evening when everyone is full of food, ice-cream and lollypops, there is the long slow drive home on roads crowded with returning cars.
Brighton
Brighton is one of the best-known south coast resorts and is very popular for day trip excursions. It is only fifty miles from London and can be reached by fast train in an hour. At the weekend the pebbled beaches are thronged with people sunbathing or picking their way to the water’s edge for a dip.
Bournemouth
Located a hundred miles from London, the beaches are wide and sandy. White houses line the cliff tops and narrow valleys, densely wooded with pine trees, reach down to the shore. The area near to the town of Torquay on the Devon coast is sometimes called Britains Riviera and the climate is so mild that palm trees grow along the sea front.
Blackpool
On the north-west coast, a popular resort for the people in the industrial north, Blackpool is a gay, noisy town, famous for its amusement facilities and the magical lights. At night people travel from miles around to see the extravaganza of lights decorating the sea front.

23、Lerik, a mountainous region in southern Azerbaijan, is famous for being home to an unusually high concentration of centenarians (百岁老人).
According to Azer Tag, Azerbaijan’s state news agency, there was once a time when Lerik was home to over 500 centenarians, about one percent of its entire population. That number decreased to about 100 out of around its 63, 000 citizens, and to just over 20 today. The sharp decrease in the number of centenarians is mainly associated with modern life, such as pollution, processed foods and stress.
Still, Lerik’s reputation as a land of longevity (长寿) lives on through its history and centenarians like Shirali Muslumov. Without him, it wouldn’t have been included in the map of the world. That Muslumov died in 1973 is a documented fact, but he claimed to have been born in 1805, which made him 168 years old, 52 years older than the world’s verified oldest man, and 46 years older than the oldest woman ever known.
Shirali Muslumov was Lerik’s most famous centenarian ever. He received congratulatory letters from the likes of Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, and attracted the attention of Harvard physician Alexander Leaf, who visited Lerik in 1973 to learn the secret of his longevity. He discovered a 117-year-old farmer, who still worked in the fields and a 108-year-old sheep-keeper.
Unfortunately, the fame of longevity seems to have done Lerik more harm than good. It opened the mountainous region to the outside world. Although fresh produce, and locally produced dairy products and meat are still available, they’re now overshadowed by chocolate bars and other sugary drinks, as well as vodka and other alcoholic drinks.
It was never clear if lerik owed the longevity of its citizens to one single thing, or a combination of factors (因素) like a carefree life, fresh mountain air or clean diet, but something seems to have changed in recent decades, although people here still do their best to prevent their reputation from disappearing.
【1】The figures listed in paragraph 2 are mainly intended to show ________.
A.why centenarians prefer to live in Lerik.
B.why the population of Lerik drops abruptly.
C.the harmful effect of modern life on longevity.
D.the high concentration of centenarians in Lerik.
【2】What contribution did Shirali Muslumov make to Lerik?
A.He introduced a new lifestyle to it.
B.He promoted it to the whole world.
C.He turned it into a tourist attraction.
D.He helped bring its produce to a larger market.
【3】What can be learned about Shirali Muslumov from paragraph 4?
A.He was invited to Harvard University for a visit.
B.He was internationally famous during his lifetime.

24、It is reported that half the world’s forests have already been destroyed. This widespread destruction is due to deforestation (采伐森林). Deforestation is the removal of a forest or group of trees where the land is later transformed to a non-forest use. Cutting down trees is necessary for man’s survival. However, deforestation has a number of negative effects on the environment and needs to be controlled.
There are two main purposes for cutting down trees and one of them is to use the trees as resources. Essential items like paper, furniture and charcoal are all made from trees. Deforestation is also carried out to clear land for farming and to make room for roads and houses. As the population grows, more of the forest has to be cleared.
Although deforestation is necessary up to a point, it has some negative effects on the environment. Firstly, cutting down forests destroys animal habitats, leaving them with no place to live in. Deforestation also allows erosion to occur, which leaves the land easy to landslides and makes it difficult for plants to grow there. Finally, the removal of trees also worsens air pollution. Trees act as natural air filters that change carbon dioxide into oxygen. When they are removed, carbon dioxide can build up and pollute the atmosphere. Hence, it is obvious that deforestation harms the environment.
Due to the harm deforestation causes, it is necessary to control it. There are a number of ways to do this. One of them is to make better use of farming land. That means we do not need as much land for farming, and hence do not need to cut down so many trees. There must also be laws to limit deforestation and these laws must be enforced strictly. On top of that, reforestation must be carried out systematically. This method involves planting new trees and plants in areas where deforestation has occurred to replace what was destroyed.
To sum up, although deforestation must be carried out, it can harm the environment and must be controlled. Beyond a certain point, this damage to the environment cannot be fixed. Hence, we should do our best to make sure that the damage is never too great to fix.
【1】What is the second paragraph mainly about?

【3】According to the text, how can we control the harm of deforestation?
A.By replacing new trees.
B.By banning deforestation.
C.By passing laws to limit farmland.
D.By making the best of farmland.
【4】What may be the worst result if deforestation is beyond control?
A.Carbon dioxide will pollute the atmosphere.
B.There will not be any forest left in the world.
C.The damage to the environment will be beyond repair.
D.People will have no trees as resources for essential items.
