21、But would a faster reading speed mean that we could learn more? Some people claim that it’s possible. In July last year, six-time speed reading champion Anne Jones sat down to read Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. Just 25 minutes and 31 seconds later, she finished it - which equals a reading rate of around 3, 700 words per minute. Jones runs training courses teaching speed reading, recall and concentration techniques and there are numerous speed reading apps that have appeared on the market over the past few years. But do they actually work?
First, we need to understand how we read. The human eye movement system is central to our reading ability. Read over that sentence again, and think about how your eyes scan across the words. They don’t move smoothly over them. Instead, they make a series of short, sharp jumps, skipping over a few characters before briefly landing on a word. The movements are known as saccades and the pauses are called fixations.
Reading isn’t just about seeing the words - you need to comprehend them to build up a picture about what the text means. People are able to get through a block of text faster, but at the cost of accuracy and understanding. In other words, if you use a speed reading app, then you’ll probably get the gist (主旨) of a piece of text, but you’ll struggle to recall details about what you’ve just read.
So, does speed reading work? Well, yes and no. It really depends on what you’re reading and why you need to read it. As yet, there isn’t a trick that enables you to read a piece of text both quickly and accurately - there’s always going to be a trade-off.
【1】What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Speed reading is bad at times.
B.Speed reading is a waste of time.
C.Speed reading can work sometimes.

D.Reading ability is related to eye movement system.
【3】What does the underlined word in the last paragraph “trade-off” most probably mean?
A.balance.
B.change.
C.business.
D.bargain.
【4】What might the writer continue to talk about?
A.The advantages of faster or slower reading.
B.The reasons why to do faster or slower reading.

D.The methods with making use of faster or slower reading.
22、 Novelist Ernest James Gaines, whose poor childhood in a small Louisiana plantation town flourished the stories of black struggles that grew into universal stories of grace and beauty, has died. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office released word of his death.
Ernest James Gaines was born on Jan.15, 1933. His first writing experience was writing letters for uneducated workers who asked him to inform far-off relatives of their news. The fictional town of Bayonne, La., the setting for Gaines’ stories, was actually New Roads, which Gaines left for California when he was 15.
Although books were denied to him throughout his childhood because of Louisiana’s strict segregation (种族隔离), which extended even to libraries, he found the life surrounding him rich enough to recollect in story after story through vivid detail.
In A lesson Before Dying, for example, the central figure is the teacher at the plantation school outside town. Through the teacher, whose profession Gaines elevate to a calling, the novelist explores the consistent themes of his work: sacrifice and duty, obligation to others, the qualities of loving, the nature of courage.
The themes are also explored among the tensions of late 1940s, and the teacher is the character burdened with the long past and with the expectations of a better future.
Gaines’ characters achieved a power and timelessness that made him a distinctive voice in America literature. Much of the appeal of his books is their seeming simplicity and straightforward story line. “I can never write big novels,” he said. But the questions he explored were the eternal ones many great writers confront: what it means to be human, what a human lives and dies for.
He needed five or six hours each day devoted to writing, and “I can’t write a couple of days and skip two or three days,” he said. A Lesson Before Dying took seven years.
【1】Which city do you think is Ernest James Gaines’ hometown?
A.Bayonne, La. B.New Roads.
C.California. D.New Orleans.
【2】Which of the following best describes Gaines’ childhood?
A.Eventful. B.Sorrowful.
C.Vivid. D.Beautiful.
【3】What can we learn from the text?
A.The themes of A lesson Before Dying are not merely about sacrifice and duty.
B.Many of Gaines’ books are simple and straightforward.
C.Gaines isn’t a person who can write big novels.
D.Gaines was anything but diligent because his work took 7 years.
【4】What’s the purpose of this text?
A.To introduce a classic book.
B.To explain an eternal topic.
C.To remember a writer.
D.To recommend a book.
23、Things You Need to Know About Your STRESS
After 60 years of research, scientists have determined what causes stress. There's even a handy acronym: NUTS.
N is for Novelty: This is something new you've not experienced before, like the first day of school or a new job.
U is for Unpredictability: When you don't know how something is going to take shape, as is the case during a trip to the dentist.
T is for Threat to the Ego: When your competence is questioned, such as in front of your colleagues. We're very sensitive to this.
S is for Sense of Control: When you feel you have little or no control over the situation like being stuck in traffic.
It's helpful to identify your sources of stress, because a problem well-defined is a problem almost solved. The opposite of stress is not relaxation—it's resilience. If you tell your brain that you can deal with this, it will stop producing the stress hormone and you will calm down.
Get on Your Bike !
As various bits of research have shown, cycling will lower your stress levels, whether you're doing a quick errand or committing to a lifetime on two wheels.
15 MINUTES LATER
A 2013 study from Japan showed a marked drop in people's stress levels after they had pedalled for just 15 minutes on a stationary bike.
AN HOUR LATER
Researchers found in 2015 that, compared to their cycling colleagues, those who drove or took the subway—breathed more shallowly an hour later—a sure sign of stress.
18 YEARS LATER
After following 17,985 adult commuters for 18 years, U.K. researchers discovered in 2014 that those who walked or biked reported being happier, more confident and better able to face their problems.
①
In a 2015 study, researchers subjected 66 teen girls to a stress test. Some of them held their mothers' hands during the test; others had to go it alone. The girls who had contact with their moms were able to manage stress more effectively. It's what psychologists refer to as emotional load sharing.
②
In a 2007 UCLA study, some patients hospitalized for heart failure spent 12 minutes with a therapy dog, while another group interacted with a volunteer. The dog crowd experienced greater decreases in their anxiety level compared to the patients whose visitors could actually talk back.

D.Jenny,49, is kept in the dark about a secret farewell party that her colleagues are planning to give her.

24、In late May, storms flooded streets in Florida. The floods made cars sink and turned roads into brown rivers. Flash flooding can happen when storm drains get blocked up and, especially during hurricanes, overflow into streets. It’s the leading cause of weather-related deaths.
A team of local middle-school students has a plan to stop this ongoing problem. Alyssa, Bianca and Jose are sixth-graders. The Doral students designed a device to warn city workers when and where there is a danger of flooding. The team is one of five grand-prize winners of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. The contest asked for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) solutions to the biggest challenge facing a school community.
“I’ve been living here my entire life, and all of us have encountered problems with flooding,” says Bianca. “We knew that was the problem we were going to tackle.”
The students’ device uses a laser system called lidar, which stands for “light detection and ranging.” The device, if approved by the city government, could be attached to Doral’s 2,575 storm and manhole drains — one device per drain. If a drain gets blocked with sediment (沉积物), the device could send a warning message to the city’s stormwater management office. Then the stormwater manager could send someone to clean the drain.
Starting in March, the school was closed, so team meetings went virtual. Luckily, says Bianca, “We already had a prototype device, and we just had to adjust it some more ” They also had to pitch their idea virtually to contest judges.
Twenty finalist teams were cut down to the five grand-prize-winning teams. Each of the five teams won $100 000 for technology and supplies for their science classrooms. “We put m a lot of effort and had to trust each other and that each one knew what they were talking about,” says Alyssa.
