二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I saw the most beautiful thing ever one morning. It was early with a slight frost on the ground, and I was walking on grass down to the farm—my mind on the daily routines.

Suddenly a shining flash erupted straight from the ground about 15 feet in front of me, and shot up into the sky. It was so brilliant, clear and clean. I thought the only thing that could make such a flash must be a diamond—maybe someone had lost some kind of jewelry. Or some kind of lightning strikes—so bright. I waited to see if it repeated but it didn’t.

I walked slowly towards it. There was nothing to see. I stared down at the grass, searching for gold or some kind of metal. Nothing. So I dropped down really close and there it was! A tiny spider’s web, delicately hanging between grass, flashing in a number of colors. The rising sun had caught the exact angle of the dewdrops (露珠), and that light had exploded up into the sky.

It was unbelievable, such a powerful flash from something so small and fragile, and I would have destroyed it beneath my feet. It was as if the unseen world was giving me a heads-up. Hello! Look what’s around you. I’ve never forgotten that moment.

So take some time to notice the wonder of nature that most of us never even see. So much beauty all around us if we would only take the time. Look at the tiny flowers that cover playing fields—we walk all over them without a second glance. The colors of practically any flower on the earth are breathtaking and all natural—if we would only notice. Take the time and discover from nature one secret beautiful thing that you can keep in your heart. Take a picture. It’s what life really consists of. And it’s free.

    1What actually caused the flash?

    A.A diamond. B.The lightning.

    C.A piece of metal. D.A spider’s web.

2Why did the writer feel the discovery unforgettable?

A.The flash is very splendid. B.The spider’s web is mysterious.

C.The shining object was priceless. D.Something small touches her soul.

3What does the writer try to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Appreciate the beauty of nature. B.Be considerate towards the weak.

C.Find time to play outdoors. D.Keep a secret deep in heart.

  • 22、The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at hone with her parents. All she’s ever wanted to do is to become an elementary school teacher. And she’s been working through her teaching certifications for four years after obtaining an education degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, US.

Hipp has racked up $100,000 in student loan debt and isn’t able to earn enough through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server to live anywhere other than home.

The Pew Research Center recently reported that 2014 was a milestone in the evolving living arrangements of young adults in the US. For the first time since 1880, adults aged 18 to 34 became more likely to be living with a parent than to be living on their own. Before 2014, the most common living arrangement for young adults was to be living in their own property as part of a couple.

UBS Financial Services, a Swiss global financial services company, released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave.

The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代)get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that combine parents and children. “Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and guiders. Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.”

Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in the US, said although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, which doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest. He said, “There’s no doubt it has held back household formation and purchases on things people spend money on related to household formation and child-rearing,” Hoffman explained. “But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don’t have a house expense or marriage. I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values. But it’s much more common for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s becoming part of the culture.”

1Why does Caitlin Hipp have to live at home with her parents?

    A. Because she can’t afford to live on her own

    B. Because she doesn’t want to live anywhere other than home

    C. Because she wants to obtain more degrees

    D. Because she wants to be an elementary school teacher

2What can we learn about young adults aged 18 to 34 before 2014?

    A. They didn’t have the freedom to arrange their living

    B. They would rather live with their parents than live by themselves

    C. They started to fly the nest as more jobs were provided

    D. They preferred to live away from their parents

3What conclusion can we draw from the report released by the Swiss company?

    A. Children living with parents is becoming part of the culture

    B. The majority of millennials refuse to get financial help from parents

    C. Most millennials are building closer relationship with their parents

    D. Young people tend to live at home because of fewer job opportunities

4What’s Stuart Hoffman’s attitude towards this trend?

    A. Indifferent   B. Subjective

    C. Objective   D. Negative

  • 23、He had two armed guards protecting him until his death aged 55. He also had two massive tusks(象牙)and, just as important, he had a name. Ahmed the elephant received the special treatment until his death in 1974, under an order from Kenya’s then-president Jomo Kenyatta. The name helped give Ahmed and, by extension, the cause of elephant conservation greater recognition.

With Ahmed the elephant in mind, Kenya last week launched the Elephant Naming Festival in which people get the chance to adopt an elephant after contributing money toward their chosen animal’s conservation.

The initiative gives the adoptive parent priority when it comes to choosing the first name of the elephant. The second name will be a Maasai(马赛族)one based on the animal’s profile, history, role in the family and physical attributes like the state of its tusks.

Launching the program, Najib Balala, a top official at the Ministry for Tourism and Wildlife, said the elephant-naming initiative will bring greater awareness of the need for conservation and promote tourism. Balala said the event will be held each year on Aug 12, observed as World Elephant Day.

“We feel that this is a great opportunity for everyone to be part of the sustainability of tourism and wildlife in Kenya for future generation,” Balala said.

“Wildlife is a big part of Kenya’s heritage and ensuring that future generations enjoy this resource should always remain the most important. The launch of the Magical Kenya Elephant Naming Festival builds on the good work that the Kenya Wildlife Service and other partners have been doing over the years.”

【1】What has the special treatment to Ahmed brought about?

A.More people are willing to protect elephants.

B.More people are anxious to collect tusks.

C.More elephants are guarded by armed soldiers.

D.More elephants are released to the wild.

【2】What can adoptive parents do in the Elephant Naming Festival?

A.Adopt an elephant according to its role in the family.

B.Take priority for giving their elephant’s first name.

C.Contribute money toward launching the initiative.

D.Consult the elephant’s profile to give it the second name.

【3】Why was the Elephant Naming Festival launched?

A.To be in memory of the dead elephant Ahmed.

B.To raise money for the cause of elephant conservation.

C.To contribute to wildlife protection and sustainable tourism.

D.To offer people a chance of naming and adopting an elephant.

【4】What is Najib Balala’s attitude to the elephant-naming initiative?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Disapproving.

  • 24、   Science is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens.

As Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted, chickens distinguish among one hundred chicken faces and recognize familiar individuals even after months of separation. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate food reward for a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends, and mourn when those friends die.

Pigs respond to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O’s. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs walked only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.

I’ve been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career almost four decades ago, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes out-think other animals. They’re other primates(灵长目动物), after all, animals from our own mammalian class. Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, whales too are masters of cultural learning, and that elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies on these mammals helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedure in laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.

Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chickens, pigs, goats, and cows, 1 started to wonder: Will the new science of “food animals” bring an ethical (伦理的) revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will our ethics start to catch up with the development of our science?

1According to Annie Potts, hens’ choice of a later and better reward indicates their ability of ______.

    A.interaction B.analysis C.creation D.abstraction

2The research into pigs shows that pigs ______.

A.learn letter quickly B.have good eyesight

C.can build up a good relationship D.can apply knowledge to new situations

3What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The similarities between mammals and humans.

B.The necessity of long-term studies on mammals.

C.A change in people’s attitudes towards animals.

D.A discovery of how mammals express themselves.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Lifestyles of Food Animals B.Science Reports on Food Animals

C.The Inner Lives of Food Animals D.A Revolution in Food Animals
