  • 21、Life Lessons

Life is not easy when you are pursuing something worthwhile and ready to learn from the best experiences. 1Here are some life lessons which people will learn the hard way in majority of cases.

It takes consistent time and effort to be successful in any area. However, people usually get discouraged when it takes more time than they thought it would. At this time, people refer only to people who have already achieved what you want to be, which most people fail to do. Look at any successful person and you’ll notice one thing common in all of them. They took time to learn and mastered their skills like no one else. 2

Be brave to take the road less travelled. In our whole life, we always want to follow the same path that everyone suggests, do the same things everyone does, take the same career path everyone takes, wear the same clothes everyone wears, and hang out with the same people we work with.

3But when you get bored of life, you will realize that you are not meant to do what everyone does and that your destiny is different from anyone else’s out there in the world. But the price you pay to realize this is high because it takes a great amount of courage to follow your own path.

You don’t have to live your life in a way society wants you to. 4Parents sometimes force their children to select a career they don’t want because other children have selected that career. Worst of all, people follow them without even asking. There is no harm in old rituals (惯例) and beliefs but when you pursue then before your interest, sooner or later you’ll realize that yon should first do what you think is right.

5 However, if you are smart enough to learn early and wish not to waste your precious time learning them the hard way, learn them now and apply it to your life.

A.You have to break the rules sometimes.

B.After al life lessons are always learned the hard way.

C.There is no elevator to success; you have to take the stairs.

D.The reason why we follow others is that we are scared to fail.

E.It always takes tests and then fails us to learn anything worthwhile.

F.The general rule goes that the harder you try, the greater results you get.

G.Many old beliefs are being performed these days and are followed blindly.

  • 22、   There’s a blue house in central Florida that’s hard to miss. It’s somewhat famous among people who live nearby — it’s painted to look like Starry Night”, the iconic painting by Vincent van Gogh — but not everyone is a fan of the larger-than-life artwork.

“We had not originally intended to paint the house like this,” Nancy Nemhauser, who lives there with her husband, Lubomir Jastrzebski, and their adult son, told TODAY. They started by painting the wall that runs outside of their home, because it was “in disrepair” and they wanted it to look nice. The couple said they even asked permission from the city to paint the wall, and were told it was OK.

“So we went ahead and started having the wall painted by an artist who has his work shown throughout South America,” Nemhauser said. They chose Van Gogh because their son, who has autism (自闭症), is a fan — and they hoped that the mural would come in handy if he ever wandered far from home.

God forbid he were to be in a situation where he did not have the ability to tell people his address clearly. We’re hoping that he would have the ability to at least say that he belongs at the Van Gogh house,” Nemhauser said. The couple added that their son loves the look of the house. “There’s some magical connection I think between Van Gogh and autistic kids, because Van Gogh was possibly also autistic,” Jastrzebski said.

After the couple painted the wall, they got a citation (传票) from the city stating that the wall painting was considered graffiti (涂鸦), and that the wall must match the house. That’s when they decided to paint the entire house to look like “Starry Night” — knowing that’s not quite what the city had in mind, but confident that they weren’t breaking any law.

Since then, they’ve been fined $10,600. In February, they filed a federal lawsuit against the city, claiming the city is violating their right to freedom of expression.

Neither Mount Dora city officials nor their lawyer would comment on the issue. But in February, they did say in a statement that they were trying to preserve the residential character of our neighborhoods, and that the house “may present a distraction to safe vehicle operation along the street which fronts the home”.

Nemhauser and Jastrzebski add that many neighbors love the house, and thousands of people have signed an online petition (请愿) in support of keeping the painting. While both sides are in settlement talks, the fate of the mural is still up in the air. The family said they were ready to battle for what they believe in.

1What was the couple’s initial intention to paint the wall?

    A.To beautify the damaged wall.

B.To respond to the call of the city.

C.To assist an artist to show his work.

D.To express their son’s admiration to Van Gogh.

2What does the underlined phrase “God forbid” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.May God forgive us.

    B.It’s forbidden by God.

    C.Even God can’t help it.

D.We hope it does not happen.

3What’s Mount Dora city officials’ attitude towards the unique house?

    A.Supportive. B.Disapproving.

    C.Ambiguous. D.Understanding.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.“Starry Night” house in Florida arouses a heated debate.

B.Neighbors sign an online petition in support of “Starry Night” house.

C.The magical connection between Van Gogh and autistic kids.

D.Homeowners battle for their “Starry Night” house in Florida.

  • 23、The king was to pass by a beggar’s small poor house and the man was excited, not because he was about to see the king but because the king was known to part with expensive jewels and huge sums of money when moved by sympathy.

He saw the king’s carriage just when a kind man was filling his begging bowl with uncooked rice. Pushing the man aside, he ran into the street, shouting praises of the king and the royal family.

The carriage stopped and the king beckoned to the beggar.

“Who are you?” he asked. “One of the most unfortunate of your people,” said the beggar. “Poverty sits on my doorstep and follows me about like a dog. I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon!” “Have you nothing for your king except great sorrow?” said the ruler, putting out his hand. “Give me something.” The beggar, astonished, carefully picked up 5 grains of rice from his bowl and laid them on the king’s outstretched palm. The king drove away. The beggar’s disappointment was great. He complained and cursed the king again and again for his miserliness.

When he returned home in the evening he found a bag of rice on the floor. “Some generous soul has been here,” he thought and took out a handful of rice from the bag. To his astonishment, there was a small piece of gold in it. He realized then that the bag had been sent by the king. He emptied the rice on the floor, feeling sure there would be more gold pieces in it, and he was right. He found 5, one for each grain of rice he had given the king.

“It is not the king who has been miserly,” thought the man, sadly. “If I had been generous and given him the whole bowl of rice, I would have been a rich man today.”

    A. was a kind man B. was arrogant

    C. was a miserly man D. was very young

【2】Why did the king ask the beggar for something according to the text?

    A. Because he was poor than the beggar.

    B. Because he wanted to make the beggar even poorer.

    C. Because he had nothing to eat.

    D. Because he wanted to give something to the beggar in return.

【3】The real reason why the beggar got only five gold pieces is that________.

    A. he complained and cursed the king again and again

    B. the king was only generous to rich people

    C. the king wanted to punish him severely

    D. he himself was miserly

  • 24、The Royal Ballet is to stage a performance featuring a disabled dancer, recognizing that being inclusive (包容) is “not just about diversity of race, but also about diversity of physical ability”.

Joe Powell-Main, who uses a wheelchair and sticks to perform, tells a story about overcoming life’s obstacles to pursue a dream that he has had since he was five. Having danced from the age of four, he won a place at the famous Royal Ballet School (RBS), even performing as a student in a Royal Ballet staging of The Nutcracker — only to see his hopes of becoming a professional dancer hit by a condition that affected his mobility.

During his fourth year of training, he developed injuries following a period of growth, leading to surgery on his left knee. Complications (并发症) developed and a serious car accident took a further toll on his body, bringing his training to an end. Aged 15, he was using a wheelchair and assumed he would never dance again.

But his life was transformed after his mother spotted a leaflet about wheelchair dancing, which played a part in helping him to accept his disability. Powell-Main recalled, “When I acquired my disability, I completely thought dance wasn’t an option for me and was completely over. Then why not ballet? In terms of partnering, it’s a new way of doing things.”

He took part in the Royal Ballet’s platform Draft Works, which has now been extended and he’ll perform it as a 10-minute duet (双人舞) with Lubach. “Powell-Main made an impression on me. Dancing with him was really special, which has opened up refreshing possibilities, new ways of partnering, sharing weight between each other, using speed and dynamic in different ways,” Lubach said.

Emma Southworth, the Royal Ballet’s creative producer, said, “If someone has a wheelchair, what are the possibilities of moving in a wheelchair? If the stick becomes the extension of the arm, what does that mean? If we’re really being properly inclusive, we’ve got to look at how we work with disabled performers.”

【1】What was a turning point in Powell-Main’s life?

    A.A serious car accident.

B.The surgery on his left knee.

    C.A leaflet about wheelchair dancing.

    D.The performance in The Nutcracker.

【2】What does the underlined word “toll” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Step.

    B.Risk.

    C.Break.

    D.Damage.

【3】What can we learn about Powell-Main?

A.He refused to submit to the fate despite his disability.

B.He has been suffering from the knee injuries since he was five.

C.He stood out in RBS due to his hard work and professional skills.

D.His dancing career was totally ruined by the unexpected car accident.

【4】What might be the best title?

    A.A special performance

    B.A life full of obstacles

    C.A unique wheelchair dancer

    D.The Royal Ballet’s rich diversity
