二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Years ago, the American writer Kurt Vonnegut often said there was one story that would always make a million dollars: Cinderella.

In Hollywood and in today’s economy, it is more like $70 million and that is just a start. “Cinderella” made that amount in ticket sales when it opened last weekend. But the merchandising deals linked to the movie are also hugely valuable.

So the artistic success of the film is open to debate. What is clear, however, is the movie’s business success. It is a hit in the theaters but it is also a hit in retail (零售). And Disney widened its usual market for “Cinderella” products.

There are products connected to the Disney film targeted not only at little girls, but women, too. For example, the famous shoe designer Jimmy Choo partnered with Disney to create a version of Cinderella’s “glass slippers” or shoes. You can buy them for about $5,000. At that price, you would not want to lose one at the ball, even if that is the way you get your prince. Several other shoemakers also accepted Disney deals to design versions of the famous footwear.

The makeup company MAC quickly sold all its products with official links to “Cinderella.” But lucky buyers were soon selling the products on the online marketplace eBay for many times the original price.

HSN is a popular television and online retailer (零售商) of jewelry, clothing and objects for the home. The marketer is now an exclusive seller of “Cinderella” products.

So, is there anything left for the children, those people we think of as the traditional audience for the age-old fairy tale? Yes, you can find toys and other children’s products at the American retailer JC Penney. Of course, you can also visit a Disney store.

Disney also produced an animated version of “Cinderella.” It came out in 1950 and is considered a classic. Which do you think the Disney company does better: live action (实景真人) or animated films? Post your thoughts in the comments section.

【1】Products connected to the film “Cinderella” are generally aimed at ________.

    A. toy retailers     B. shoe designers

    C. female consumers D. make-up producers

2The film “Cinderella” is also a hit in retail because ________.

    A. it has always been warmly welcomed by successful businessmen

    B. huge profits were made in the sales of various “Cinderella” products

    C. box-office profit is much larger than the derivatives (衍生产品) of the film

    D. Disney produced both a live action and an animated version of the film

3What could be the best title for this passage?

    A. “Cinderella” Is a Big Hit in the Theaters.

    B. Two Different Versions of “Cinderella”.

    C. Debates on the Artistic Success of “Cinderella”.

    D. “Cinderella” Is More than Just a Movie for Kids.

  • 22、   Hydration (水合作用) sometimes takes a backseat to other health goals or priorities (优先). Here’s everything you need to know to stay hydrated.

Know why water is good for you

Doctors and dietitians always talk about the importance of hydration. The cells, tissues, and organs of your body need water to function.1, which include transporting nutrients and helping to remove waste. Water is so important that the average human body only lasts about three to four days without it.

    2

There is no perfect calculation to determine how much water you should drink a day. There are too many contributing factors, such as altitude, climate, activity level, diet, and personal medical history.3, your body needs more fluid to process the food.

So how much water should you drink a day? On average the daily recommended fluid intake for women is around 11 glasses of water and 13 glasses for men. Plain water is ideal for hydration, but all fluid helps.

    Know whether you need water

An easy way to see if you are drinking enough water is to check your urine (尿液). If you are only producing small amounts of urine infrequently and it’s dark in color, you need to drink more water. Of course, if you have dry mouth or thirst, you should drink more water, too.4.

Know how you can drink enough water

Worrying and wondering how much water you should drink a day won’t happen if you break up your water intake. Drink 18 ounces of water at 7:00 a. m., 12:00 p. m., 3:00 p. m., and 7:00 p. m.5. By the time you’re thirsty, you’re likely already dehydrated. And thirst isn’t always a reliable indicator of fluid needs, especially in children and the elderly.

    A. If you eat a high-fiber diet

    B. Water plays many vital roles

    C. If you eat less food than usual

    D. Know how much water you need

    E. Know where you can get the water

    F. Don’t rely on your thirst to remember to drink water

    G. How much water you should drink a day depends on situations

  • 23、In mammals, loud calls usually serve as alarm signals that warn fellow species of an enemy or other danger. On the other hand, screams from humans can have very different meanings, as Swiss researchers now report in the journal “PLoS Biology”. Human’s screams are not always only associated with negative emotions such as fear, pain, anger and grief, but also positive emotions such as joy and pleasure.

Sascha Frühholz and his colleagues from the University of Zurich studied how many types of human screams there are, how accurately test subjects can distinguish them, and which brain regions are involved in processing such sound signals. To do this, they first made sound recordings of different screams. Twelve men and women were to put themselves in situations where they reacted with a brief scream. The predetermined situations included, for example: an attack by an armed stranger, celebration about a sporting victory of their favorite team, the threat of an opponent(对手).

From the recordings, the researchers finally selected 420 screams. From this, they identified six distinct categories of screams, including three of alarming characters (cries of pain, anger, and fear) and three non-alarming screams (as expressions of great pleasure, extreme joy, and desperate sadness). Contrary to all expectations, the subjects reacted to non-alarming screams more quickly and recognized the emotion expressed with it more reliably than with alarming screams. This was also confirmed by images of the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging(FMRI).

Until now, researchers assumed that humans also detect and process perceived alarm signals particularly quickly in the form of screams, as this is an important survival mechanism(生存机制), says Frühholz. But unlike monkeys and other mammals, non-alarming screams would have become more important for communication. “This changed priority is probably due to needs that have evolved in the evolution of complex human social relationships.”

【1】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Human’s expressions.

    B.A research on screams.

    C.A survival mechanism.

    D.Mammals’ alarm signals.

【2】Which expression can be reacted to more quickly?

    A.Cries of pain.

    B.Anger.

    C.Fear.

    D.Desperate sadness.

【3】What does “This changed priority” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.All-mammals are more sensitive to alarming screams.。

B.All humans survive owing to quicker reaction to screams.

C.Non-alarming screams are more useful for human communication.

D.Alarming screams are more important than non-alarming screams.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.To spread and advocate.

    B.To argue and discuss.

    C.To recommend and introduce.

    D.To compare and inform.

  • 24、   Many Americans think of driverless cars as a futuristic technology that will revolutionize travel in cities and along state highways. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional ways of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled, so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation.

A retirement community in San Jose, Calif, which has been transformed by a small fleet (车队) of driverless taxis, shows the potential of self-driving cars to transform people’s lives. Built by a tech start-up called Voyage, the modified (被改进的) Ford Fusions are currently limited to a two-mile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles, which allow them to participate in social activities they would otherwise be unable to enjoy simply because they could not get to them.

When the trial run finally expands to 15 miles of road, these residents—whose average age is 76—will also have a convenient and reliable new way to appointments. As these cars continue to serve residents there, it is easy to understand why California is moving to simplify regulations for the industry.

In Michigan, forward-thinking policies have the potential to unlock other hidden benefits of autonomous vehicles, especially for those with physical disability. The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has strongly advocated for the development of this technology, saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling (满意的), independent lives.

Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation, but it is too often overlooked that this future cannot arrive fast enough for millions of Americans who are forced to depend on others for day-to-day travel. The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars.

1What’s the attitude of most American people to the future of autonomous vehicles?

    A. uncertain B. optimistic

    C. indifferent D. doubtful

2What is the modified Ford Fusion?

    A. A kind of autonomous vehicle. B. The name of a retirement community.

    C. The collection of social activities. D. A two-mile road for self-driving cars.

3Examples are given in the third and fourth paragraphs to prove ________.

    A. how driverless technology benefits the aged and disabled

    B. why driverless cars are restricted in many states in America

    C. what are preventing the development of the technology

    D. when driverless cars can enter people’s life eventually

4What does the author attempt to inform us in the last paragraph?

    A. The concept of autonomous vehicles has been widely recognized.

    B. Regulations should go hand in hand with driverless technology.

    C. The benefits of driverless cars have been fully unlocked.

    D. The weak groups are often overlooked despite technology advances.
