二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife’s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn’t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn’t find her.

It was now one o’clock, and the concert began at 2:30. “Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,” suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.

By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.

1Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law?

A.they could not see each other because of the fog.

B.Joan had not seen Crown Jewels.

C.They planned to do different things until lunch time.

D.The writer didn’t want to go to the concert.

2What did the writer plan to do in the afternoon?

A.Go to the concert. B.See the Crown Jewels.

    C.Return to Cambridge. D.Go shopping.

3The reason why they didn’t all meet for lunch was that _______.

A.They lost their way in the fog

B.they forgot to make necessary arrangement

C.they waited at different places and didn’t meet each other

D.the couple couldn’t find the underground station

4It’s quite clear that for Joan the trip to London had been ________.

A.spilt by the fog B.quite tiring

    C.rather disappointing D.very enjoyable

  • 22、World history has seen three ancient dramas: Greek tragedy and comedy; Indian Sanskrit drama; and Chinese opera. The first two have become historical and only Chinese opera has survived.

Chinese opera took shape in the 12th century. After developing for more than 800 years, its abundant local styles of opera are still enjoying great popularity, of which Qinqiang is one of the most ancient operas.

Qinqiang opera is a thousand-year-old local opera originating in China's inland northwestern region. It has established a unique tradition as an “opera shouted out" with its high-pitched arias(高音唱腔)。Li Mei has won a reputation as one of the four greatest Qinqiang actresses. She's also known for her passionate commitment to exploring the theatrical possibilities offered by Qinqiang.

Li Mei and her workmates are halfway through an afternoon rehearsal(排练)and most have broken into a sweat. Singing in a near-whisper, the forty-year-old opera star performs the stylized movements for the leading role-the bitter dead Lady Li Huiniang in Ghost's Hate.

Little wonder that Li Mei is such a powerful presence on stage. She's the greatest contributory actress who's able to interpret a character so persuasively and tell a story so convincingly that European audiences warmly hug this unfamiliar art form.

Li Mei said, “We performed this opera in the Netherlands to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of Holland's National Theatre. We enjoyed a fifteen-minute curtain call and the audiences applauded wildly for a long time. The local press entitled me the 'Nemesis of the Orient' and the 'Chinese Venus'. Why is that so? Because they've fully understood what the opera implied-the loyalty towards love, and dead as she may be, her love persists. The reason why this opera was able to touch millions of hearts is that it has a beautiful story presented by a beautiful art form.”

【1】What can be inferred about Chinese opera from the passage?

A.It made history with ancient Greek operas.

B.It consists of various dynamic local operas.

C.It has a history shorter than Indian Sanskrit drama.

D.It originated from the most ancient local Qinqiang opera.

【2】What is the greatest feature of Qinqiang opera according to the passage?

    A.The spirited high tone.

    B.The northwestern origin.

    C.The stylized movement.

    D.The popular curtain call.

【3】Why is Ghost's Hate starring Li Mei loved by foreigners?

A.Because its story is easy to be fully understood by foreigners.

B.Because its leading role Li Mei is famous as the “Chinese Venus”。

C.Because it conveys the popular message of loyalty towards love.

D.Because it is a perfect combination of touching plot and attractive form.

【4】What is Li Mei's greatest contribution to Qinqiang opera?

A.She won a reputation as one of the four greatest Qinqiang actresses.

B.She brought Li Huiniang, the bitter dead Lady in Ghost's Hate to life.

C.She explored many theatrical possibilities offered by Qinqiang opera.

D.She spread one of Chinese traditional cultures to the other side of the world.

  • 23、Inspiration 4, as the mission is called, is indeed impressive, the first time “normal people” with minimal training will leave the planet, enter orbit, and return to Earth days later — a considerable advancement from the 11-minute joy ride Jeff Bezos took in July. But despite the lofty name, don’t be fooled: Inspiration, is not the victory for everyone that it presents itself to be.

I’ve been hugely critical of the billionaire space race, which incautiously pollutes our atmosphere and has the enormous opportunity cost of time, money, resources, and energy that could go toward more urgent planetary issues, like world hunger and global poverty. Clean energy research, sustainable transportation innovations, and the creation of high-paying jobs in green sectors would do far more for the average non-billionaire than a rocket ship ever will.

Still, we’re being tricked and get convinced that SpaceX’s civilian mission is “inspiring” because its passengers aren’t professionals. The Falcon 9 rocket was chartered by businessman Jared lsaacman, who has successfully shaped the mission as a worthy cause for Wednesday’s voyage is part of a large fundraising effort for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

As for his guests, lsaacman is taking St. Jude physician assistant Hayley Arceneaux; Sian Proctor, a passed-over finalist from NASA’s astronaut program; and Chris Sembooski, who was gifted his spot after his friend won it in a raffle. No doubt, the primary reason for the journey is marketing for private space travel.

It’s hard not to be won over! But that’s also the point. “Civilian” missions like Inspiration make space travel appear to be “accessible to all”, despite the fact that spaceflight will be “a hobby only reserved for billionaires and cent-millionaires for many years to come,” as Business Insider writes. Yet if space tourism companies can get the general public to support them, then they’ve effectively gotten us to buy into something that does not actually do any good to us. Additionally, whenever something earnestly asks you to consider it an “inspiration”, it’s always good to ask yourself why.

【1】According to the passage, Inspiration 4 is ________.

A.the first civilian mission to orbit the earth

B.a minute-long joy ride to leave the planet

C.the first space trip for people without training

D.an impressive spaceflight experienced by professionals

【2】The underlined word “lofty”" in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.

    A.interesting

    B.noble

    C.common

    D.original

【3】Which of the following statements on Inspiration4 does the author agree with?

A.It slows the creation of high-paying jobs

B.It worsens world hunger and global poverty.

C.It wastes time, money, resources and energy.

D.It accelerates the research process of clean energy.

【4】Which of the following is the best title of the article?

    A.Space trip: Inspiration for Civilians

    B.Inspiration4: Not Really an Inspiration

C.Space tourism: A Privilege for Billionaires

D.Private Spaceflight: A Worthy Cause for All

  • 24、Feathers are not just for flight. They keep birds warm, and attract mates. And for one Australian bird, feathers even help produce an important sound—an alarm.

“People had long noticed these birds produced these loud sounds.” Trevor Murray, a researcher at the Australian National University said. “My supervisor Rob Magrath and May Hingee thought they were used as an alarm. So they did some playbacks and they could show quite strongly that if you play back these sounds to other birds, they flee straightaway. So I was really interested in how they produce the sound, whether it is actually a signal, and whether it’s a reliable signal.”

The team focused their experiment on specific feathers in the pigeon’s wing. “We were able to target the eighth primary feather, which is unusually narrow. And then we also removed, on different sets of birds, those neighboring feathers, the ninth primary feather and the seventh primary feather. And we were able to see when the eighth primary feather was missing, the high note had completely disappeared. So the eighth primary feather produced that high note and the ninth primary feather actually produced the low note.”

And if the birds are fleeing from danger, they produce a louder and higher sound than they do during a normal takeoff. The study is in the journal Current Biology.

Murray and his colleagues did another experiment where they used the recordings they made to observe the reactions of other pigeons. “We were able to see the unusual eighth primary feather was important for signaling the alarm. When that eighth primary feather was missing, they very rarely responded. They almost never fled. Whereas when the ninth primary produces the sound, they fled just as much as to normal alarms. This shows us this unusual primary feather is important for signaling alarm.”

That makes birds of a feather flee together.

1What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The birds   B. Rob and May

    C. The feathers   D. The loud sounds

2What did Rob Magrath and May Hingee find out about the birds?

    A. They fly away as a group.   B. They produce different notes.

    C. They send alarms with feathers.   D. They attract mates with feathers.

3Why did the team remove different feathers?

    A. To record the notes they produce.   B. To keep the pigeons stay in cages

    C. To compare their width and length.   D. To observe other pigeons’ reactions.

4According to Murray and his colleagues, why does the unusual feathers matter most?

    A. It keeps the pigeons warm   B. It responds to alarms

    C. It helps birds fly more quickly   D. It sounds alarms of danger.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    A Beautiful Past

Historian John Ellis has met some trouble and become a hot public talking topic these days. Even before he became a best-selling author, he was famous for his vivid public lectures. In his popular courses at Mount Holyoka College in Massachusetts, he would often make classroom discussion lively by describing his own fighting experiences in Vietnam. But as Ellis's reputation grew—his books on the Founding Fathers won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize—the history professor began to entertain local and national reporters with his memories of war. Last year, after The Boston Globe reported Ellis's experiences in the Vietnam war, someone who knew the truth about Ellis dropped a dime (告密). Last week The Boston Globe revealed that Ellis, famous for explaining the nation's history, had some explaining to do about his own past.

“Even in the best of lives, mistakes are made,” said Ellis. It turned out that while the historian had served in the Amy, he'd spent his war years not in the jungles of Southeast Asia, but teaching history at West Point. He'd also overstated his role in the antiwar movement and even his high-school athletic records. His admission shocked colleagues, fellow historians and students who wondered why someone so successful would beautify his past. But it seems that success and truthfulness don't always go hand in hand. Even among the successful achievers, security experts say, one in ten is deceiving. And, oddly, people often beautify their past once they're famous, says Ernest Brod of Krol Associates, which has conducted thousands of background checks.

Then what makes them do is? Psychologists say some people succeed, at least in part, because they are uniquely adjusted to the expectations of others. And no matter how well-known, those people can be haunted (萦绕) by a sense of their own shortcomings. “From outside, these people look anything but fragile (脆弱的),” says Dennis Shulman, a psychoanalyst. “But inside, they feel afraid and uncertain.”
