二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When Alok and I met in 1984, he was attracted by my passionate love of children, dogs, and poetry. I was drawn to his intelligence and his broad, comforting shoulders. Our marriage was very happy, and our sons, Viraj, an accountant, and Anurag, a lawyer, were warm, loving, and blessed with both a high level of integrity (正直) and a wicked sense of humour. It was as if I had everything I had wished for. When people said, "Life is not perfect," I used to think, "Oh, but it very nearly is."

But one Saturday night everything became different. Alok and I were about to leave our flat in Delhi for a party when all of a sudden he just passed away. It was a fatal cerebral stroke (脑中风) without warning.

I was terrified, but felt I owed it to myself, to Alok, and to the boys to rise above the loss and use the strength our love had given me to go forward. I also had to deal with some pressing problems. Where would I live? Our home was a company-owned flat, and most of the facilities we'd enjoyed, like the club, medical coverage, and even the phone, came with his job.

I made the decision to try and do as much as I could on my own, without asking, or expecting, other people to help me. As a journalist, I had been privileged to share some truly exceptional life stories. I now had to handle my own life story, and accept change with as much courage as I could muster.

The journey ahead needed new skills. I finally found the right job, and today I am working in corporate communications. My life now is very different from what it was earlier. I understand that we are all given an inner strength, and that we truly grow up, regardless of age, when we learn to stand alone.

【1】What changed everything for the author? ______

    B.Moving to a new home.

    C.Her happy marriage.

B.the author didn't work when her husband was alive

C.Viraj and Anurag engaged in the same occupation

D.the author's current living situation is bad

【3】What does the underlined word "muster" in the fourth paragraph probably mean? ______

    A.Admire.

    B.Learn.

    C.Gather.

    D.Wander.

【4】What does the author want to tell us? ______

A.Society should give support to single women.

B.Faced with a sudden change, we should be brave.

C.We should receive necessary support as we age.

D.Instead of staying at home, women should work, regardless of age.

  • 22、AIDS may be one of the most undesirable diseases in the world. Luckily, there is now hope for AIDS patients.

According to a recent paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine,Chinese scientists have successfully used CRISPR technology -a method of gene editing-to treat a patient with HIV. While it may not have cured the patient fully, it still represents a huge step forward in fighting the disease.

The patient was a 27-year-old Chinese man who was diagnosed with both AIDS and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (淋巴母细胞白血病), a type of blood cancer. Despite his bleak situation, doctors offered him a little hope: a bone marrow (骨髓) transplant to treat his cancer and an experimental treatment for his HIV. They used this chance to edit the DNA in bone marrow stem cells (干细胞) from a donor before transplanting the cells into the patient.

Specifically, the treatment involved using the gene-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 to delete a gene known as CCR5, which encodes (给…编码) a protein that HIV uses to get inside human cells. Without the gene, HIV is unable to enter cells. Talking about the gene, lead scientist Deng Hongkui told CNN, “After being edited, the cells and the blood cells they produce have the ability to resist HIV infection.” Nineteen months after the treatment, the patients leukemia was in complete remission( 缓 解 ) and donor cells without CCR5 remained, according to the research paper.

Though the transplant didn't cure the man’s HIV, it still showed the effectiveness of gene-editing technology, as there was no indication of any unintended genetic changes-a major concern with past gene-editing treatment experiments. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in the United States, who was not involved in the study, praised the treatment. “They did a very creative experiment, and it was safe,” he told Live Science. “It should be viewed as a success.”

Deng believes gene-editing technology could “bring a new dawn” to blood related diseases such as AIDS and sickle-cell anaemia ( 镰 状 细 胞 贫 血 ). “Thanks to this new technology, the goal of a functional cure for AIDS is getting closer and closer,” he said.

【1】The underlined word “bleak” in Paragraph3 probably means “______”.

    A.hopeless

    B.unstable

    C.embarrassing

    D.unique

【2】How did the treatment fight against HIV?

    A.By identifying and killing HIV.

B.By changing the structure of HIV.

    C.By preventing HIV entering cells.

D.By removing a protein HIV feeds on.

【3】What is the result of the treatment?

A.Gene-edited cells are able to resist HIV infection.

B.The number of cells infected by HIV has decreased.

C.CCR5 and other genes in the patient's cells are changed.

D.Unintended genetic changes have taken place in the patient's cells.

【4】What can we know about the experiment?

A.It pointed out the problems of gene treatment.

B.It provided a new way to cure AIDS patients fully.

C.It could offer a safe treatment for blood-related diseases.

D.It was the first example to use gene-editing tool to treat AIDS.

  • 23、One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching(干呕)into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.

What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare(噩梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.

Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it’s taking part, not winning, that’s important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.

Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting—and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone’s eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.

I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

【1】What can we learn about the author’s son from Paragraph 1?

    A. He talked with some mothers.

    B. He comforted his classmates.

    C. He had difficulty in sleeping.

    D. He suffered from stomachache.

【2】Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because .

    A. this is an independent school

    B. it is a tradition of the school

    C. it helps children lose weight

    D. children enjoy watching sports

【3】What does the author think about team games?

    A. They should include more stressful races.

    B. They are acceptable to different children.

    C. They should be abandoned at primary schools.

    D. They are less fun for those who love running.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards sports day?

    A. Critical. B. Neutral.   C. Positive. D. Ambiguous.

  • 24、Former South African President Nelson Mandela who was treated for a recurring (复发的) lung infection, dies on Dec. 5th, 2013, at the age of 95.

People around the world are mourning the loss of the country's first black president. He was often called humble, charming, loyal person and a man who cared about others.

“He seemed to have that special charismatic(有魅力的) personality,” said Herman Cohen, U.S. assistant secretary of state for Africa from 1989 to 1993. “He became the symbol in the fight against apartheid.”

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. As a young man he became active in the anti-apartheid movement and joined the African National Congress, or ANC, in the 1940s.

The white-led government banned the ANC in 1960, but the group continued to operate secretly. Mandela became head of the group's new military wing, coordinating a sabotage campaign against South African military and government targets.

In 1962, he was arrested and put on trial for his actions and sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town. He spent 18 years there, refusing a government offer to release him if he would renounce the ANC's armed struggle. But he was freed in 1990 after South African President Frederik de Klerk legalized all political parties and discharged most political prisoners.

Shortly after his release, Mandela was elected president of the African National Congress. And in 1994, when the ANC won South Africa's first all-race elections, he was inaugurated (就职) as the county's first black president at age 75.

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another,” he said.

President Mandela said he would stay for only one five-year term. Cohen says Mandela earned international respect for South Africa's national reconciliation.

“Mandela devoted himself mainly to rallying the Africans to this new era to work on economic development, having good education, also he was very much of a spokesman on the international scene.” he said.

In 1993, Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize with his once bitter enemy F.W. de Klerk for their contribution to the peace process in South Africa. After receiving the award, Mandela praised the South African people.

“All have created a society which recognizes that all people are born equal,” he said. In a country torn apart by years of racial conflict, Nelson Mandela is considered a remarkable leader -- a man who turned South Africa away from violence and hatred into a country of greater peace and understanding.

【1】The underlined word “apartheid” in the 3rd paragraph probably means______.

    A. racial separation B. financial aid

    C. infectious illness  D. fulfilling life

【2】How long was Nelson Mandela sent to prison?

    A. 18 years B. 28 years

    C. 6 years   D. 19 years

【3】What is the author’s attitude in the passage?

    A. negative B. positive

    C. subjective D. neutral

【4】Why was his bitter enemy F.W. de Klerk awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela?

    A. F.W. de Klerk did not kill Mandela during his presidency.

    B. F.W. de Klerk was one of Mandela’s friends in the early years.

    C. F.W. de Klerk made his own contribution to the process peacefully as well.

    D. F.W. de Klerk was considered a remarkable leader turning South Africa away from violence.
