  • 26、Hidden gardens in London

From nature reserves to community spaces, we’ve dug up some of London’s most secret gardens, where you’ll find pockets of splendid nature and forget about all your worries.

    Queen’s Wood

Across the road from the better-known Highgate Wood, there is something more magical and quiet about Queen’s Wood— witness its hilly pathways through the mountain ash and cherry trees. It might be only a few hundred metres from Highgate tube station, but native bluebells and countless species of small animals make this a wonderful retreat.

    Phoenix Garden

Behind Charing Cross Road, this is a super spot for a leafy lunchtime break. Look out for frogs and sparrows, which are thriving thanks to an enthusiastic conservation initiative. The garden closed last autumn for redevelopment work but has reopened in time to take advantage of our long-awaited spell of improved weather.

    Postman’s Park

A short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral lies one of London’s most touching monuments: George Frederic Watts’s Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. Within the quiet Postman’s Park, nestled beneath a roof, are just over 50 ceramic plaques(牌匾), each honoring the memory of an ordinary person who lost their life trying to save others.

    Red Cross Garden

Originally intended to give Southwark children a space to play, this Victorian garden has been restored to its original design, complete with pond, cottage, bandstand and formal borders. While relaxing in the restored bandstand, it’s hard to imagine the view back in 1887 when it was surrounded by workhouses and factories.

【1】Which garden is close to a subway station?

    A.Queen’s Wood.

    B.Phoenix Garden.

    C.Postman’s Park.

    D.Red Cross Garden.

【2】What can you do in Postman’s Park?

    A.Take photos of old workhouses.

    B.Swim in the pond.

    C.Learn stories about selflessness.

【3】What do Phoenix Garden and Red Cross Garden have in common?

A.They have got some repair work.

    B.They were surrounded by factories.

    C.They will be temporarily closed.

D.They have the same original design.

  • 27、   True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it is lost:—Charles Caleb Colton Just like in any other relationship, arguments and fights are also a part of friendship. You will hardly find friends who have never fought with one another. Whatever the reason is, if a person feels that he is responsible for creating the differences, it is important that he apologizes to his friend.

Though you can use the email, text messages or chat for expressing your apology, the good old way of saying sorry to your friend through a letter will surely have a great effect on him. This will make your friend realize that your efforts of saying sorry are genuine and you really care for him.

    Points to Remember:

Timing: Write the letter at the proper time. It is not advisable to put off it for too long.

Words: While writing the letter, what matters the most is that you truly feel sorry.

Sequence: Always begin by apologizing and saying sorry for your mistake. Then explain to him your side of the story. In the third and last paragraph, talk about what his friendship means to you and make a promise of not repeating the mistake.

Delivery: You earn either post it or deliver the letter personally or through someone else. You can also keep it at a location where your friend will be able to find it easily.

Some people may try to point out the friend's mistake while writing the letter. Avoid this completely, as it can make matters worse. The letter has to be brief and should only talk about the subject that has led to your apology. Keep patient and do not expect immediate results. In some cases, it may take time for the person to forgive and forget.

1The saying in the first paragraph is used to .

    A. let readers study a famous saying

    B. introduce the topic of the passage

    C. show who is Charles Caleb Colton

    D. tell readers the importance of friends

2The underlined word "genuine" can be replaced by .

    A. honest B. general

    C. open D. careful

3From the passage, we can know that the writer advises using to apologize.

    A. the email B. text messages

    C. chat online D. letters

4When writing a letter of apology, you should   .

    A. try to point out the friend's mistake

    B. make the letter long and interesting

    C. begin by apologizing and saying sorry for your mistake

    D. write the importance of your friendship in the first paragraph

  • 28、   Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country’s GDP measures “everything except what makes life worthwhile.” With Britain voting to leave the European Union, and GDP already predicted to slow as a result, it is now a timely moment to assess what he was referring to.

The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a mistaken concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK’s GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures. If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country’s economic prospects?

A recent annual study of countries and their ability to convert growth into well-being throws some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more all-round assessment of how countries are performing.

While all of these countries face their own challenges, there are a number of common themes. Yes, there has been an economic recovery since the 2008 global crash, but in key indicators in areas such as health and education, major economies have continued to decline. Yet this isn’t the case with all countries. Some relatively poor European countries have seen huge improvements across measures including civil society, income equality and environment.

This is a lesson that rich countries can learn: When GDP is no longer regarded as the only measure of a country’s success, the world looks very different.

So what Kennedy was referring to was that while GDP has been the most common method for measuring the economic activity of nations, as a measure, it is no longer enough. It does not include important factors such as environmental quality or education outcomes — all things that contribute to a person’s sense of well-being.

    1Robert F.Kennedy is cited(引用)because he _______.

A.praised the UK for its GDP. B.identified GDP with happiness.

C.misinterpreted the role of GDP. D.had a low opinion of GDP.

2Which of the following is true about the recent annual study?

A.Its results are inspiring. B.It is sponsored by 163 countries.

C.Its criteria are questionable. D.It removes GDP as an indicator.

3What is the author’s attitude towards GDP as the most common measure of a country’s success?

    A.Favorable. B.Indifferent.

    C.Critical. D.Defensive.

  • 29、Could the Futuristic Traveling Tube Become a Reality?

It sounds like something straight out of a science fiction movie or a silly cartoon: a futuristic traveling tube that can quickly shoot people wherever they want to go, inside a tiny pod. But this may be just around the corner for people looking for a faster, easier, and cheaper-than-ever way to travel. South African-American inventor and billionaire Elon Musk, who, in the past, has worked on both private space flight and electric cars, recently announced he has been working on the design of this traveling tube, which could forever change the way we travel the world.

In an interview, Musk described the new tube as a fifth kind of transportation. “We have planes, trains, automobiles, and boats,” he explained. “What if there was a fifth mode? I have a name for it, it’s called the Hyperloop.”

The Hyperloop would have the power to cut back on travel time between major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, which is what inspired Musk to design the Hyperloop in the first place. Musk stated in an interview that he actually came up with the idea for the Hyperloop while thinking about the train that takes people between Los Angeles and San Francisco—it is known for being one of the slowest in the country.

“This system I have in mind...can never crash, is immune to weather, it goes three or four times faster than the bullet train…it goes an average speed of twice what an aircraft would do,” explained Musk.

“You would go from downtown L. A. to downtown San Francisco in under 30 minutes,” he added. “It would cost you much less than an air ticket and less than any other mode of transport.”

People using the Hyperloop would shoot around in pods, which are each just over six-and-a-half feet across, and the pods would travel through tubes located either above ground or under water, though Musk has not yet released his final design drawings.

Additionally, Musk believes the Hyperloop could be completely powered by the sun—making it more environmentally friendly than cars, airplanes, or train systems. Someday it could possibly move people between the East and West Coasts of the United States in less than an hour, which is faster than any other mode of transportation that exists. Eventually, the Hyperloop would be able to move people around the world.

    1What does this passage describe?

A.A traveling tube that could help people get around in the future.

B.The costs of building traveling tubes around the world.

C.The damage that cars, planes, and trains do to the environment.

D.The reasons that people are looking for a cheaper-than-ever way to travel.

2If built, the Hyperloop would be faster than any other type of transportation. Why?

A.People using the Hyperloop would travel in pods that are about six-and-a-half feet across.

B.The Hyperloop is being designed to travel at twice the speed of an airplane.

C.Right now people can fly, drive, or take a train to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

D.Inventors in other countries are working on technology similar to the Hyperloop.

3Why might people want to use the Hyperloop instead of other kinds of transportation?

A.People with motion sickness might not be able to handle the Hyperloop.

B.People are tired of using the same four kinds of transportation over and over.

C.The Hyperloop could take people to places where planes and trains do not go.

D.People would not have to pay as much to use the Hyperloop.

4What is this passage mainly about?

A.Science fiction movies and cartoons featuring futuristic traveling tubes with tiny pods.

B.The interest that inventor Elon Musk has in private space flight and electric cars.

C.Why the train between Los Angeles and San Francisco is one of the slowest in the country.

D.A tube that could make travel in the future easier, faster, and cheaper.
