二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The first time I heard about my classmates engaging with social media was in the fourth grade. A few of my friends and some of my classmates had excitedly jump onto platforms like Instagram at such a young age. On the other hand, I hesitated. I only knew the basics, but was foreign to some words on social media.

All throughout middle school, I stuck with the same thinking. And no as a freshman in college, I am looking back and wondering why I have never been naturally interested in social media.

Scanning Instagram, you ought to find dozens of pictures of people in beautiful countries, taking part in exciting activities, and spending time with friends and family, among many other things. The thought of doing this never resonated with me. I respect and understand those who believe using social media allows them to express themselves and share aspects of their lives others. However, I have never had any interest in doing the same. In my eves, family gatherings and friend get-togethers are just as, if not more meaningful when not shared with others.

Most people have experienced feeling insecure and unconfident on social media. Images that are changed represent unrealistic beauty standards that can only be obtained through dangerous ways. Even without using social media, I knew that using apps like Instagram and Facebook would make me embarrassed of all the aspects that make me a unique individual. I never wanted to look at a post on social media and immediately compare myself and my life.

I constantly observe my classmates getting easily distracted (使分心) by social media. While trying to complete their homework, they have a powerful urge to open up Instagram or Facebook to see if there are any new messages. With homework and after-class activities consuming the majority of my day, I cannot wait to finish every task on my to-do list, so I can finally spend time with my family or have some time for myself to relax from my busy day.

    A.waned off

    B.let down

    C.hid from

    D.appealed to

【3】Why do people using social media might feel insecure?

A.They follow other people’s beauty standards totally.

B.Social media change the way they look at themselves.

C.Social media encourage them to be a unique individual

D.They spend more time posting their images on social media.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.A to-do list can stop people using social media.

B.Social media can waste pepole’s valuable time.

C.Spending time with family always enjoys first priority.

D.Students pay more attention to social media than to study.

  • 27、   Though sometimes we may lose our ability to do something we love, passions don’t have to end. Suzelle Poole of Dallas, Texas is living proof of that. The 79-year-old has been dancing for more than seven decades.

Suzelle started ballet when she was just 7 years old, and her devotion only grew stronger as her talent increased in the following years. In fact, Suzelle was so talented that she went to perform all around the world! Like most professional ballerinas (芭蕾舞女),Suzelle expected a short-lived career. “When I was about 26,1 knew I only had a few years left,”she said. It’s simply the nature of the art form because the movements are so hard on people’s bodies. But Suzelle’s body didn’t wear out at 26 — or even 56! At one point, she broke her arm but she was dancing again by the following week.

Nowadays she focuses on teaching the next generation of ballerinas at the Royale Ballet Dance Academy, where she and her students regularly perform for senior residents in assisted living facilities.

Suzelle has become such an inspiration that CBS News reporter Steve Hartman and his 5-year-old daughter Meryl recently traveled to Dallas to interview her. Steve’s little girl couldn’t wait to meet and dance with the woman she wants to become.

During the interview, Suzelle shared a piece of wisdom: “Ballet helps everything,” she said. “If you’re not feeling very well, you go to a ballet class, and you feel better after.” Meryl nodded knowingly. She also added, “Ballet could always cheer me up whenever I feel depressed.”

It’s no wonder Suzelle has no plans to hang up her pointed shoes. Why would she give up something that brings her so much joy?

1Why did Suzelle at her 26 think her career would end soon?

A.The nature of the body didn’t allow lasting performance.

B.The audience didn’t like her performance.

C.She injured her arm in a training course.

D.She had to look after her family.

2Why did Steve Hartman take his daughter Meryl to meet Suzelle?

A.To help Meryl with her problems.

    B.To make Meryl experience a reporter’s work.

C.To inspire Meryl to pursue her dancing dream.

D.To realise Meryl’s dream of dancing with famous people.

    3In Suzelle’s opinion, ballet dance ___________.

    A.benefits people’s mental health

B.should be taught at primary school

C.is less attractive to the young

    D.raises people’s interest in art

4What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.Suzelle will go to find other joy of life.

B.Suzelle will carry on her ballet career.

C.Suzelle will put away her ballet shoes.

D.Suzelle will devote herself to art teaching.

  • 28、   Giving children access to literature is important.Educators, parents, and community members should help students develop a passion for reading. Not only is reading literature important in developing cognitive(认知的)skills to be able to succeed in a school or work setting, but it is valuable for other reasons as well.

First, children's literature provides students with the opportunity to respond to literature and develop their own opinions about the topic.Quality literature allows for some differences in opinion. One reader may take something completely different away from the piece of literature than the next reader, based on the two personal viewpoints and experiences.

Besides, children's literature provides a path for students to learn about their own cultural heritage(遗产)and the cultures of other people. However, when teaching students about the cultural heritage of others, one should be very careful in selecting which books to recommend. There are stories which contain inaccuracies about certain cultural groups. However, there are also children's books that are more accurate in teaching the cultural differences of others.

Undoubtedly children's literature also helps students develop emotional intelligence.Stories have the power to promote emotional and moral development.Children's literature contains many moments of crisis(危机),when characters make moral decisions and consider the reasons for their decisions,an important skill for children to see modeled. It also encourages students to think deeper about their own feelings.

Children's literature also encourages creativity. It plays an important role in nurturing(培育) and expanding the imagination. For instance,The House in the Night describes the creativity a young girl has in her dreams at night,as she flies about the dark neighborhood on the wings of a bird.

Children's literature promotes the development of students internal imaginations. Children's literature should be attached importance to because it promotes personality and social development.Children are easily influenced by others, and children's literature can help them develop into caring, intelligent, and friendly people.Being able to understand other people's viewpoints and to not be selfish are important skills that adults must nurture in children. Children's literature can promote social development by encouraging students to accept other people and their differences, thus becoming considerate people and growing into quality citizens.

Finally, children's literature is invaluable in that it is a timeless tradition, one in which books are the major means of passing on our literary heritage from one generation to the next. For a younger audience, children can build their cognitive and language skills through exposure to Mother Goose rhymes.Children in older grades can learn to appreciate the classic plays and messages of William Shakespeare in picture books.Children are only young for a short time, and so we must give them access to a basic literary heritage of timeless books.Quality children's literature has the great power to attract audiences for many generations.

Children's literature is important in both the school setting and at home.Teachers and parents should both be able to distinguish between quality and ordinary literature,in order to give students access to the best books to encourage these important values of literature.

1From the passage we can know_

A.children's literature helps pass on language skills from one generation to another

B.reading literature helps develop children's cognitive skills as well as personalities

C.literature plays an unimportant role in the development of children's imagination

D.children should read ordinary literature, which benefits emotional intelligence

  • 29、   Qomolangma is the world’s highest mountain. You may have learned from your textbooks that its height is 8,844 meters. But not all sides are in agreement on this. Different researchers have given different results. In addition, the height of the mountain can change over time.

That’s why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak of Qomolangma to re-measure its height on May 6. They are equipped with the latest technology. It is not an easy task. The average air temperature on the mountain is-29-four degrees lower than in Antarctica-and powerful winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones (无人机) cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That’s why it’s still necessary to send human experts to the peak to get reliable results.

But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain?

In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian plate (欧亚板块) meets the Indian plate. It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak’s height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of Earth’s crust (地壳).

The survey team will also get firsthand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate change has affected the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau (青藏高原).

1Which statement is true according to the first paragraph?

A.Researchers measures the height of Qomolangma every year.

B.There is no agreed-upon height of Qomolangma at present.

C.It’s easy to measure the height of Qomolangma.

D.The height of Qomolangma increases every year.

2Which of the following words could replace “peak” in Paragraph 2?

    A.point B.top C.base D.edge

3What challenge will the Chinese survey team face?

A.A lack of water. B.Dangerous animals.

C.Bad weather conditions. D.The movement of Earth’s crust.

4What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs?

A.Why measuring the height of Qomolangma is important.

B.What is the height of Qomolangma.

C.How Qomolangma became the highest mountain.

D.How plate movements have affected the height of Qomolangma.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
