二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   “Tear them apart”“Kill the fool”“Murder the referee (裁判)

These are common remarks at various sporting events.Although they may sound innocent, they influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed.Essays have been written about the way words affect us.It has been shown that words having certain connotations (含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to our usual behavior.Perhaps the time has come to remove it from sports words.

The dictionary meaning of the word “opponent” is “enemy”.Thuswhen a player meets an opponenthe may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such timeswinning is the only goal, and every action, no matter how violent or rudemay be considered reasonable.I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player rubbed his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then shouted“Are they wet enough now”I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s illegal blocking by hitting him with the ball as hard as he could.Off the courtthey are good friends. It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which differs from normal behavior.

ThereforeI believe it is time we promoted the game to the level where it belongs by setting an example to the rest of the sporting world.Replacing the word “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start. The dictionary meaning of the word “associate” is “friend”“companion”Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the word “associate” rather than “opponent”

1Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s view?

A.Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.

B.The words people use can influence their behavior.

C.Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.

D.Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.

2Unkind words are spoken during games because the players______ .

A.usually receive little education B.are usually rude and easily annoyed

C.cannot afford to be polite in a match D.treat their opponents as enemies

3What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?

A.He refused to continue the game.

B.He angrily hit the referee with a ball.

C.He claimed that the referee was unfair.

D.He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.

4The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by_______ .

A.calling on players to be polite on the court

B.raising the referee’s sense of responsibility

C.changing the attitude of players on the sports field

D.improving the relationship between players and referees

  • 27、   Editors note: Whether people are overworked recently made headlines when several internet company bosses said the only way for employees to achieve success is through harder work and longer hours. Forum readers share their opinions.

    Cecilia

Working too many hours only means you arc time-wasting and inefficient(低效的).This means it takes you longer to produce something than someone else.

A good manager knows how to encourage his employees to work in their full ability instead of expecting them to work late even if they don't have something to do. People who stay in their office until late hate their jobs and it affects their performance, as well as other ways of their life.

    Rosemary

Overworking is just modem slavery. In many countries, overworking would be attacked because it shows poor work performance, and the boss would prefer you work in a better way 7 hours and then go back home than 8 hours with poor performance.

Nervy  Nowadays, it’s hard for a young person to build a good future, for pressures are on his or her shoulders: housing, children, parents, themselves, etc. But everyone must keep working hard to have them on the way to the good future, which is not certain. What’s sure is that if you're lazy and don’t work hard, no good future will come.

    Sunny

I don't think anyone wants to work overtime The fact is the competition is so extreme if you don’t work hard someone will easily and willingly replace you, especially in the IT industry. Employees are told they need to work longer hours or they won't get raised. It is time to give up the culture of overworking.

1What will happen if Cecilia is forced to overwork?

A.She will perform to her full ability.

B.She will feel unhappy to do it.

C.She will ask the employer to do it.

D.She will encourage other workers to do it.

2Whose idea is a little bit different from the others?

    A.Cecilia. B.Rosemary.

    C.Nervy D.Sunny.

3In which part of the newspaper can you find the passage?

    A.Culture. B.Business.

    C.Lifestyle. D.Opinion.

  • 29、   As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.

In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.

In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”

According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

1What can we learn about the first experiment?

A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.

B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.

C.The first group did not try to remember the information.

D.The second group did not understand the information.

    2In transactive memory, people ___.

    A.keep the information in mind

    B.change the quantity of information

    C.organize information like a computer

D.remember how to find the information

3What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?

    A.We are using memory differently.

    B.We are becoming more intelligent.

C.We have poorer memories than before.

D.We need a better way to access information.

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.

For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 1 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 2 of Martian resources, including oxygen.

Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 3 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.

Earth Reliant explorations is 4 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.

Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 5 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 6 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.

Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 7 for Mars.

Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 8 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.

This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 9 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.

There are challenges to 10 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
