The hot dog is popular. It’s not a dog, but a cooked sausage in a long piece of bread. Here are some stories and facts about it.
The 1600s A German called Johann Georghehner created the “dachshund” sausage. “Dachshund” is a small German dog with a long body and short legs. The 1860s The very first hot dog — the “dachshund” sausage in a roll — was sold by Germans in New York. It became popular in the US later. 1871 Charles Feltman, a German, started the first Coney Island hot dog stand. It made hot dogs known to more people. 1893 Chris Von Der Ahe started the American tradition of eating hot dogs at baseball parks, making hot dogs more popular. 1901 A New York cartoonist, Tad Dorgan, saw the red hot “dachshund” sausages sold on streets. 26、To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade (遮蔽) against the sun.
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.
Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

27、
Rowing is a good sport for people. The sport is not so commonly played in China, but almost half of all American high schools have rowing teams. Recently, the school where I study had a rowing season that gave me many great experiences.
During the season, we practiced rowing a lot. We got up at six every Saturday morning and practiced for three hours out on the river. Each one of us had an oar(浆), and we each rowed one oar with both hands. Together we pulled the oars, and the oars pushed the water back so the boat would move forward. After three hours of practice, we often felt very tired, because rowing is a very physical sport. When you row, you do a lot of work with your thighs and back.
Though the practices were very hard, I chose to do them because I like the joy hard work brings. At every practice, I always did my best. Even when the coaches were not there, I kept rowing hard with my hands because I wanted to find out how well I could do. In order to move the boat fast, everyone on the team must keep the same pace (速度), so we needed to work together.
The hard work I did during the rowing helped me develop my teamwork qualities. The experience also taught me that if you want to get something, you need to pay something first. As Americans like to say, “No pains no gains!”
