In the Chinese lunar calendar (农历) there are 24 solar terms (节气) in a year. Start of Summer means the coming of a new season — summer. And it usually begins in May. The temperature rises quickly during this time. Here are three things about how Chinese people celebrate Start of Summer.
Checking one’s weight. The habit of weighing people at Start of Summer is still popular in some places of China today. It’s said that this practice will bring health and good luck to the people weighed.
Eating eggs. In the old days, Chinese people believed a round egg was a symbol of a happy life and eating eggs on the day of Start of Summer was a good wish for good health. People put tea into the boiling water together with eggs to make “tea eggs”. Today it has become a famous snack in many places of China.
Taking care of the heart. According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine, Start of Summer is a key time to protect the heart. When it grows hot, heat can influence health. So people prefer food such as fruit and vegetables.

26、 If life can be compared to a meal, I think the mistakes are like salt and the success is a candy.
“Hey,” said the boy whose name I couldn’t remember, sitting next to me. “Don’t worry. Take your time.” And so I did. But I still couldn’t correctly pronounce my Chinese name that was given by the teacher. I was so embarrassed on my first day of learning Chinese.
I took Chinese classes during my summer vacation. Every morning I walked for 25 minutes to the class while having a Chinese pancake from one of the breakfast carts(推车) on the way. Learning Spanish in school was a cushy job for me, because I could speak French and Italian which helped me with it. However, learning Chinese was difficult at first. As a boy who was born in America and grew up in America, I knew nothing about the language and had no experience of learning the language. I chose it mainly because my goal was to teach and work internationally.
As the classes went on, I slowly found that I was making connections. My 10 years of playing the piano has allowed me to perform for others. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. As the teachers helped me build up the confidence, I soon began tasting the sweetness.
So what did my summer really taste like? It tasted like the Chinese food that, for the first time, I did not order in English, my mother language.

27、“ Listen carefully to what I say.” the time traveler said. “I shall tell you something that you will not agree.”
“Why will we not agree?” I asked.
“Because the science and mathematics you know are not correct,” he said, “You believe there are only three dimensions(三维空间)---length, breadth(宽)and thickness.”
“There is nothing to agree with that,” the youngest member of our little group said.
“Exactly!” the time traveler answered. “But there is also a fourth dimension---time.”
“We all know about time,” another member of the group said,” Time passes.”
“I do not agree,” the time traveler said. “Length, breadth and thickness do not pass. They stay in the same place in space. We move about them. I can prove that time is the same. It does not pass. We move in time the same way that we move in length, breadth and thickness.”
None of us believed the time traveler, and we argued with him for many hours.
“If we could travel back in time,” the scientist said, “we could do things to change the future.”
“If we could travel forward in time,”the doctor(博士)said,“We could do things that change our present.”
The time traveler smiled. “It is clear,” he said, “that there is only one way I can show you that I am right. We must do an experiment. Please wait here.”
He left the room and soon returned, carrying what looked like a clock.
“This is a model of a time machine. It took me two years to make it.” the time traveler said, “I want all of you to understand that when I start the machine, it will immediately travel in time and disappear from present.”
He turned to the youngest of us. “Give me your hand.” he said.
The young man put out his hand. The time traveler took it and placed it on the machine. Immediately, there was a sudden wind, and the little machine disappeared.
I was certain this was not a trick, but the doctor was not so sure.
“Are you asking us to believe,” he said, “that the machine is now in the different time?”
“Certainly! In my laboratory, a full-size machine is almost complete. As soon as it is complete, I shall send myself on a journey through time. Would you like to see my machine?”
“Are you serious about this?” the doctor asked.
“I have never been more serious about anything,” the time traveler said, “Come.”
