  • 25、I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say anything bad to anyone.

Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.

Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food festival”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.

By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with thebountyof the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!

Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. It is good to know that your parents will provide you a shoulder to cry on when you meet setbacks(挫折). Would it still be welcome if your mother gave up her job in order to be closer to you all the time?

Many parents in China have chosen to do so. They stay home to cook healthy food and help children with their homework, reported 21th Century Business Herald and some even rent(租) a small room near their children’s school to save their time. Such parents have got the nickname of “helicopter parents”, which means they always closely hover around their children.

“This is harmful to their children as they will not be able to learn self-dependence,” said Chicago family expert(专家) Danielle Sines.

However, parents have their own reasons. Most students in China are only children, and so parents are willing to do everything to help them stand out among the fierce(激烈的) competition. said China Youth Daily.

This June, Liu Lu began her last year in high school in Hebei. Her mother rented a small room near her school so that she could do the washing and cooking for her. “I’ll have to be there for my children as she is making that last push for college. What I do will save her a lot of time so she can better prepare for the national college entrance exam. It’s worth it.” Her mother told the reporter. In fact, schools in Northeastern states in the USA, such as Connecticut and New York, have the same trend(趋势). In September, students moved into their dormitories but many had some extra equipment(装备): their parents.

However, students are still advised to face new challenges standing on their own two feet.

【1】The underlined expression “hover around” in Para.2 probably means ________.

    A.deal with

    B.pick up

    C.look after

    D.turn to

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Many Chinese parents do much for their children.

B.The writer is strongly against what helicopter parents do.

C.The expert Daniclle Sines supports what helicopter parents do.

D.American parents always let their children face difficulties by themselves.

    【3】What’s the passage mainly about?

A.The study of “helicopter parents” in America

B.The parenting style—“helicopter parents” in China

C.The relationship between parents and children in America.

    D.The importance of children’s self-dependence in China.

【4】You can probably find the passage in ________.

    A.a guide book

    B.a newspaper

    C.a novel

    D.a story
