24、Can you remember a world before the Internet? If your answer is “No”, then you are probably a millennial. Millennials are the new generation of young Americans. They were born between 1982 and 1992. There are 33 million of them, and they are just starting to enter the workforce(劳动力). Many experts believe that millennials are different from young Americans of past generations. They also believe that millennials will change the workforce in important ways.
How are millennials different? They are the first generation born in the computer age. The Internet has always been a part of their lives. They spend about 16 hours a week on the Internet, and this doesn’t include e-mail. And they spend 72 hours a week using other electronic media, including mobile phones and video games. They are “ nation speakers” of the language of the computer age. People who were born earlier will never be native speakers of that language. Why not? They did not grow up “ speaking” it.
How will millennials change the workforce? To answer that question, it is important to understand how millennials use the Internet. They use the Internet to communicate. They visit websites such as Face Book and My Space every day. They share ideas, music, information, games and friendships with people all over the world. When they start working, they will want to share their work and ideas with others.
It is also important to understand the way millennials grew up. Their parents and teachers gave them a lot of attention. They taught them that their opinions were valuable(有价值的). As a result, many millennials are very confident. At work, they will expect their co-workers and bosses to listen to their opinions.
Millennials also grew up with a lot of structures in their lives. Many of them went to school from the age of two or three and played on sports teams. At work, they will expect the rules to be clear. They will also expect a strong but fair boss, like a coach on a sports team.. They will follow the person in charge(主管) if he or she is fair. But they will not follow an unfair boss. They will also expect their work to be fun and creative, similar to their experience on a sports team.
These are a few of the changes that experts believe millennials will bring to the American workforce. But the world is changing very fast. There will probably be more changes that are difficult to imagine today.

25、Most people will answer a ringing phone. Usually you don’t know who is phoning or how urgent their business is, so a ringing phone is difficult to ignore. In one experiment, a researcher wrote down the numbers of several public phones in stations and airports. Then he called the numbers. Someone nearly always answered. When he asked why, people usually said, “Because it rang.”
A few years ago in New Jersey, a man with a gun killed 13 people. Armed police surrounded his house but he refused to come out. A reporter found out the phone number of the house and called. The man put down his gun and answered the phone. “What do you want?” he said, “I’m really busy right now.”
Imagine you’re at work and the phone is ringing in someone else’s office. Do you answer it or not? In one survey on telephone use, 51% of participants(参与者) told researchers that they did. We can’t ignore the phone and for that reason, it forces its way into our lives. It interrupts(打扰) what we are doing and on top of that, the caller is often someone we don’t really want to talk to. However, in the survey, 58% said they never turned off the phone, and 67% didn’t mind if someone called during a television program. For 44% it wasn’t a problem if someone rang during a meal, while only 28% were angry. If someone phoned in the middle of the night, 40% told researchers that they got nervous or frightened, while around 30% got angry.
Of course, when someone is really angry, you can choose to hang up on them. This is in fact one of the rudest things you can do on the phone, but 79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases. Only 6% told researchers they never hung up on people.
【1】The gunman answered the phone because ____.
A. he decided to give in to the police
B. it was difficult to ignore a ringing phone

D. he decided to be friendly with the media
【2】How do people feel while someone rings during a meal?
A. 67% of the participants got angry.
B. 44% of the participants didn’t mind.
C. 40% of the participants got nervous or frightened.
D. 30% of the participants got angry.
【3】What does the sentence “79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases” (in
the last paragraph) mean?
A. They were angry with the rude callers.
B. They were prepared to become those rude callers.
C. They were likely to hang up on annoying callers.
D. They never hung up on others because it was rude.
【4】The purpose of the survey is to find out ____.
A. how the phone helps people’s work
B. what role the phone plays in people’s lives
C. why people mind a ringing phone sometimes
D. when the phone communication is more welcome
26、 You probably enjoy visiting the zoo, but at one time people visited a zoological garden. Zoo is short for zoological garden. When a word has been shortened, it is called a clip. For example, a ref is a short form of the word referee. Over time, many words in English have been clipped. Perhaps you go to and back from school on a bus. Students traveled on an omnibus in the past. Math and exams are short for mathematics and examinations. A mike is a short form of a microphone. Something that is a curio was once a curiosity.
When you visit a zoological garden, you may see "rhinos" if you are lucky enough. This animal certainly has a big nose ﹣﹣ in the Greek language, "rhinos" means "nose". In English, a rhino is the same as a rhinoceros. Other words have rhinos in them, too. A rhinovirus might affect your nose. This virus is what people get when they have a cold. When you have diseases in the nose, you must see a rhinologist, who can treat you.
But on the other hand, some words are really combinations(结合体)of two or more words. The new words are called blends. The meaning of a blend shows the meanings of both words it comes from. For example, the words smoke and fog blend to make smog. Do you know what motor and hotel make when combined? You're right ﹣ it's motel. Which two words do you think brunch comes from?
【1】Which of the following is a clip?
A. Examination.
B. Referee.
C. Curio.
D. Motel.
【2】Which of the following is a doctor?
A. Rhinos.
B. Zoological.
C. Rhinovirus.
D. Rhinologist.
【3】What does the underlined word "brunch" mean?
A. 早午餐
B. 长板凳
C. 大树枝
D. 浅海滩
【4】What can you conclude from the passage?
A. It is hard to learn clipped words.
B. Riding on an omnibus was not safe.
C. Clips are easier to pronounce and spell.
D. People don't like to use short words.
【5】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Combining smoke and fog.
B. Learning about blends.
C. How motel got its meaning.
D. Forming combined words.
27、Monty Roberts was the son of a horse trainer who would go from farm to farm and ranch (大牧场) to ranch, training horses. One day, while he was still in high school, Roberts was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be in the future.
That night, he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal (目标) of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail (细节) and even drew pictures of the ranch.

You come from a poor family. Buying a horse ranch takes a lot of money. There’s no way you could ever do it. Change it.”
Roberts went home and thought long and hard. One week later. the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.
He said. “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”
After that, Roberts worked very hard, little by little, and many years later, he finally owned a 200-acre horse ranch.
