25、
One afternoon, Sally was alone at home washing clothes. She heard shots in the distance. “Another battle. More soldiers will be wounded,” thought Sally. “One day I will give mother good reasons to let me help father in the field hospital!” Then she took the clean wet clothes outside to the clothesline. She nearly jumped out of her skin when a man called to her. Then she saw a wounded soldier. Quickly, she tore a sheet and wrapped it tightly around his wound to stop the bleeding.
“Thank you. I’m George. Could you help my friend, please?” begged the soldier. “He got shot in the leg.”
His friend was not far away sitting against a tree with a badly bleeding leg. Sally gave him some water, and then she washed away his blood with the water, but the blood quickly covered the wound again. She saw enough to know that a bullet(子弹)was not very deep in his leg.
Sally ran back home to get some of her father’s tools. She tore a bandage from the sheet, and then pulled the bullet from the soldier’s leg. Next, Sally quickly wrapped the bandage tightly around the wound. The pressure from the bandage would keep him from losing too much blood and passing out.
George watched Sally work. “You bandaged his leg as well as a doctor,” he said. “Where did you learn to do that?”
“My father is a doctor.” said Sally.
“He must be very proud of you.” said George.
Sally hoped so, but she knew her mother would be angry if she found Sally covered in blood, wrapping bandages around men’s legs. “No man wants a doctor for a wife.” Mother always said.
Sally was so focused on her work that she did not hear her father and brother as they came up behind her.
“You did a good job, Sally.” said her father.
Then she saw her mother walking toward them. “What’s going on? Are you hurt?” asked her mother.
“It looks like we have another doctor in the family,” explained Sally’s father. “Maybe she can help me at the hospital.”
“No man wants a doctor for a wife!” Sally’s mother’s face turned unpleasant.
“Mother,” Sally said seriously, “I have been secretly watching father work for years. I know what to do and what would be expected of me. I have dreamed of being a doctor. Please let me help father.”
Sally watched as emotions ran across both her parents’ faces—fear, anger at having been fooled, and even a bit of pride.
【1】Why didn’t Sally’s mother let her be a doctor?
A.She hoped Sally to stay at home to help with the housework.
B.There were no women doctors in their hometown at that time.
C.She didn’t think a man would like to have a doctor as his wife.
D.Sally’s father didn’t allow her daughter to be a doctor either.
【2】Why could Sally deal with the wound so well?
A.Her brother taught her step by step.
B.She practiced it by herself at school.
C.She learned from her father in secret.
D.Her father trained her for many years.
【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Sally’s parents were proud of her in the end.
B.Sally’s father didn’t think she could be a doctor.
C.Sally’s mother expected her to be a doctor at first.
D.Sally didn’t care about her mother’s feeling at all.
【4】The story mainly tells us that ______.
A.everyone should always be ready to help people in need
B.we should keep our dreams in mind and work hard for it
C.it was not easy for a girl to be a doctor in ancient times
D.girls were expected to stay at home and do housework
