Realizing the importance of reading in national strength, China has gradually raised “Reading for All” as a national strategy(策略).

There are still problems, however, such as a lower reading rate compared with the world’s main countries, less public resources, and mixed quality of reading materials. A national survey showed that Chinese people read 3.26 e-books and 4.58 paper books on average in 2019, compared with an average of 16 books in Europe and the United States. The United states introduced the Reading Excellence Act and the No Child Left Behind Act. The Republic of Korea and Japan have also introduced laws to call on reading.

Our country encourages schools, colleges and universities to open their libraries to the public, and calls on bookstores to offer reading space and organize reading for people.

Reading is not just an important professional skill. It is also a way to enjoy informative(教育性的), creative, and inspiring works in literature that enrich our life experiences. • 25、Kites have a long history. They may date back(追溯到) long time ago. They were made of bamboo and silk in China. Nobody knows exactly how or when a kite was first flown, but it is said that when a Chinese farmer tied a string(绳子) to his hat to keep it from blowing away in a strong wind, the first kite was born.

Children like playing with kites. Kites for work or play are made of wood, bamboo, paper, or silk. In 478 B.C., a Chinese philosopher(思想家), Mo Zi, spent three years making a kite out of light wood and bamboo. The earliest record of kite flying was in about 200 B.C. when the Chinese General(将军) Han Xin of Han Dynasty flew a kite over the walls of a city. He wanted to know how far his army would have to travel.

In the 13th century, Marco Polo wrote about how the shipping businessmen flew the huge kite in the wind before the ship set sail. They predicted the voyage(航海) in this way. If the kite went high and straight it meant a quick and successful voyage, but if it did not fly well, it was a bad omen(预兆). In the late 1500s, the kite was introduced to Europe by the Italians. Kite flying was first mentioned in England in a popular book in 1589.

  • 27、Many people often spend hours watching videos on their phones before sleep, with the lights off. However, do you know that using your phone in the dark is not a very good idea? The screen of your phone sends out blue light, which is quite harmful to your eyes. It can also be hard for you to go asleep.

What is blue light? Blue light is everywhere. It is sent out both by artificial (人造的) light and by our biggest light— the sun! Blue light is the part of visible light which has the second shortest wavelength. Light with shorter wavelengths have greater power. The strong energy of blue light allows it to pass easily through the cornea (角膜) of our eyes. Therefore, blue light is quite harmful to our eyes.

However, blue light isn’t all that bad. After all, it is a part of sunlight. In fact, it can help to improve our sleep. The problem, however, lies in the bright screen lights we stare at each night. In other words, the problem isn’t exactly the exposure (暴露) to blue light, but the timing of our exposure to it.

Some scientists studied the difference between reading a paper book and an e-book before bedtime. They found that it took longer for people who used an e-reader to fall asleep. These people were also less smart in the following morning.

    A.Blue light affects our lives.

B.Blue light can improve our sleep.

C.Don’t use your phone or watch TV at night.

【4】What does the underlined word “stare” mean in Paragraph 3?

    A.阅读
