  • 24、Most people have a place to call home on Earth. What about in outer space? The International Space Station (ISS) became our first “home” in space in 2000. It welcomed its first scientist that year, designing the way for 20 years of future research.

“You just have this impression that we’re all citizens (公民) of not a country, but of the planet,” former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly told National Geographic about working in ISS. “We’re all in this thing called humanity(人类)together.”

Over the past 20 years, the ISS has mainly been used as a science lab, hosting 241 people from 19 countries, according to NASA. They have gone on spacewalks, done research on how space affects the human body, and even grown plants in space.

  • 26、I hid the long black bag in the garage(车库) for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.

It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to finish my plan.

First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 1030 p.m. was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would know my secret.

Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.

It was already eleven o'clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer(锤子).

After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 400 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn't be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas brought them this year.

1Why did the man feel nervous?

    A. He left the party too late.

    B. He was afraid of the darkness.

    C. He didn’t know where the black bag was.

    D. He worried that others would discover his secret.

2The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refers to __________.

    A. thieves   B. parents   C. children D. neighbours

3In what order did the man do the following?

    a. Read the kids a story.

    b. Had a shower.

    A. e-d-a-b-c B. e-a-d-c-b

    C. a-b-e-d-c D. a-e-d-c-b

4What did the man want to do after finishing his plan?

    A. Go to sleep. B. Wake up his children.

    C. Open the bag.  D. Call the police.

5How would the children feel when they saw the man’s work?

  • 27、Many of you may wonder what else to do besides watching TV or surfing the Internet on weekends. Why not have a picnic? Junior 2 students at Beijing No 4 Middle School had a “King of Cooking” competition.

Earlier this month, about 300 students at the school went to a suburb (郊区) of Beijing to have the contest. They were divided into 24 groups. Each group had buyers, slicers (掌刀), firemakers, washers and cooks.

Firemakers faced the most problems during the time. Some of them had no idea how to keep fire burning. “The fire kept going out. We had to blow at the sparks (火星) and put on corn leaves and old newspapers,” said Wu Mofei, 13.

“It took us an hour to make the fire. Our eyes had tears from all the smoke and our faces became dirty,” he added.

When the fires were finally made, the cooks became the busiest people. Huang Lanye made fried celery (芹菜) and ham, pickled cabbage and tomato soup.

She was proud of her work. “It’s my first time making Chinese dishes. My group members ate them up in minutes and said they were as delicious as what their parents made!” said the 14-year-old girl.

Finally over ten students were titled “King of Cooking”. Wang Xiaoyue, 14, was one of them. “My group got a mark of 98 at the competition,” Wang said. “We have learned a lot while having so much fun! We are the best!”
