  • 23、   【1】   Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what makes us ill. They may give us something to take. The medicine often makes us well again.

But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. A sick person does not get well.

2   This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he wasn’t well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” was his own sense of humor. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened.  3    Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to feel well again. And he told his story in a book. He said that laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor thought so, too.

Another man was ill, and he had a terrible pain in his back.  4  So the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it as a real dog. And it was biting(咬) his back. It was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head. He made friends with the dog. And his pain went away.

5   But more and more people are getting well in this way. So call on the “doctor” inside your own head. And stay happy and well.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

It looks like a steak. It cooks like a steak. And according to the scientists who made and ate it, the thick and juicy meat smells and tastes like a steak. But appearances can be deceptive. Unlike any steak found on a menu or store shelf today, this one didn’t come from an animal.

Scientists printed it with a bioprinter, a new kind of 3D printer. The difference is that this type uses cells as a form of living ink. “The technology involves the printing of actual living cells,” explains biologist Neta Lavon, who helped develop the steak. Those cells are grown in a lab. They arc given nutrients and kept at a temperature that lets them keep growing. Using real cells this way, she says, is a real innovation over earlier “new meat” products. This allows the printed product to look, smell and taste much like a real steak.

Researchers call this meat “cultured”. Interest in it has grown in recent years, partly because the technology shows it is possible. Supporters say that if meat can be printed, then no animal would need to lose its life to become human food.

But don’t look for these products on the store shelves just yet. Making meat this way is much harder—and therefore costs more—than raising and killing an animal. “The technology will need to reduce the cost greatly before cultured meat will be widely available,” says Kate Krueger, a cell biologist in Cambridge, Mass.

One of the most expensive parts, says Krueger, is the cell-growth medium. This mix of nutrients keeps the cells alive and dividing. The medium contains expensive ingredients called growth factors. Unless the cost of growth factors drops, says Krueger,“cultured meat can’t be produced at comparable prices to animal meat.” If scientists can find lower-cost methods, this technology may stand a chance of giving beef without the moo.

  • 25、 A man once visited a temple(寺院) which was being built, where he saw a sculptor (雕塑家) making an idol (神像)of God. Suddenly he noticed a similar idol lying nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor,” Do you need two statues of the same idol?”

No,” said the sculptor without looking up, We need only one, but the first one got damaged during the last stage (时期).”

The gentleman examined the idol and found no damage on the outside. Where is the damage?” he asked.

“There is a scratch on the nose of the idol.” said the sculptor , still busy with his work.

“Where are you going to place the idol?” he asked the sculptor .

The sculptor said that it would be put on the top of a pillar(柱子) twenty feet high.

“If the idol is that high up, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?” the gentleman asked.

The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman , smiled and said ,“ I will know it.”

  • 26、When you are busy with schoolwork and making friends with others, have you ever envied (嫉妒)babies? They don’t seem to care about anyone or anything. They just do whatever they want. But a new study says this may not be the truth.

Two-year-old babies care about how others see them. They even try to manage their image when others are around them, according to scientists from Emory University in the US.

Scientists did tests on 144 babies between the ages of l4 to 24 months. They showed the babies a robot with two buttons on it. When the babies pressed the buttons, the scientists gave them different feedback(反馈). When the babies pressed the first button, the scientists would act happy and praise the baby. But when the babies pressed the second button, the scientists would pretend to be unhappy.

They found that when there were no adults around, children would press the second button more often. But when there were adults watching, they would press the first button more often.

Older children and adults tend to show the same kind of behavior. When others are watching, people like to behave better. When no one is paying attention, they behave badly, Sara Valencia Botto, the writer of the study, told the Telegraph.

Earlier studies found that children around the age of 4 start to care about what others think of them. But this new study suggests that the age is earlier. In addition, 2-year-old children will change their behavior to get a more positive feedback, Botto said.

Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people only think about it while others avoid ever climbing at all. But one thing is certain that all people come across mountains in their life.

When I was a little girl, my parents moved us to the tiny village of Otongo, Hidalgo, Mexico. This town was built at the bottom of a big mountain.

One day after school, while exploring(探索) the green woods of this mountain, I came upon a lot of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Could this be the way to the top?

I was so curious that I started climbing up those mysterious(神秘的) steps.

I climbed and climbed, but still there was nothing in sight. It was getting really dark, and I wasn’t even close to the top.

The voice of reason told me to hurry back home and try again the next day. I ran back home in the dark while trying not to get too afraid. I didn’t tell anyone about what I found that night. I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain we lived on. Could there be a handsome prince, treasure or ghosts up there?

Ah...such childhood fantasies(想象)! Those were the days when we could dream. We could do crazy things. We believed! I'm all grown up now, and life has shown me a beating at times.

I did live on a mountain in a town as described, but I created this childhood fantasy to make my days so much more fun as a kid. This story is a good metaphor(比喻) for life today.

You might ask, "What was at the top of that mountain?" I ask you, "What would you have wanted to find?"

Dream about what's at the top of your mountain. What do you want out of life?

Tomorrow is another day, and still, you must climb. Whatever you do, never ever give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, "You can't."

【1】Which word is the best to describe the writer as a child according to the article?

A.How the writer reached the top of a mountain.

B.A childhood story told by the writer.

C.Advice the writer gave on climbing a mountain.

D.What the writer's favorite mountain was like.

【3】What does the word “mountains” stand for in real life?

    A.Dreams.

    B.Treasures.
