Barcode(条形码)technology makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. You’ve probably seen the black-and-white zebra stripes(条纹)on the product. George Laurer invented it 51 years ago. It was widely used two years later. It is such a great invention that barcodes are scanned(扫描)over 6 billion times every day and used by 2 million companies worldwide today.
The next generation of barcodes, such as QR codes, can hold more information.
A barcode seems to be a simple idea, but we couldn’t simply print the number itself. For example, a misprinted(错印的)“8” could look like a “3” , while “6” looks similar to “9” if you turn it upside down. In order that they can be read correctly at any situation, each number in a barcode is replaced(代替)by seven equal-sized blocks. These are either black or white. For example, the black and white blocks in this picture on the right shows how “1” is replaced. Even if you turn it upside down, it can’t be confused with any other number, so there will be no mistakes.
The first part of a barcode tells you the country where the product was made. For example, 690 is the barcode for China. The next part tells you who made the product. The final part is about the product itself.
【1】When was the barcode invented according to the passage?
A.In 1973.
B.In 1971.
C.In 1975.
【2】Why is each number in a barcode replaced by seven equal-sized blocks?
A.Because blocks are easy to print.
B.Because blocks can hold more information.
C.Because blocks can be read correctly at any situation.
【3】What does the underlined word “confused” mean in Chinese?
A.混淆
B.比较
C.覆盖
【4】What can NOT a barcode tell us?
A.who made the product.
B.where the product was made.
C.why the product was made.
【5】Where can we probably read the passage?
A.A guidebook.
B.A science magazine.
C.A novel.

“Can’t you see? You’re behaving like the bullies,” Tara said sadly.
Ziggy looked at Tara. He knew Tom very well. Tom wasn’t usually violent(暴力的). On the contrary, he usually solved problems in a sensible and calm way. Tara hated violence and she didn’t like Tom being so angry. Tom hated violence, too. It scared him.
