Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. New research into the reasons for shark attacks(攻击)suggests that sharks don't like the way humans taste! In fact, most people who are attacked by the shark are still alive after receiving only one bite(咬). Why is this?
There are many opinions to explain why sharks sometimes attack people. One opinion is that sharks are just curious. We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. Naturally, that means they are curious when they meet something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet, the only way they can find out an object is to bite it! It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.
Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨头). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can't pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that's why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly!
Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for seals. An example of this is when a shark attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they have thick fat.
Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.

26、In the future, people may travel to Mars(火星) by water-powered spaceship! Today’s spaceships are fine for getting things into space, but they are not so good at travelling long distances. These spaceships burn chemical fuels(燃料) and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water-powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. The idea is just in the planning stages now, but scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.
The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine(发动机) Regular engines push spaceships burning fuel. The water engine will use steam. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars. Today’s spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will be able to do it.
One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of a strong material. Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filled with air “Balloon” spaceships could be very large and carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!
Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be its cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. Such savings naturally encourage continued research into balloon spaceships and water engines. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in a spaceship powered by water.

28、 When visiting a foreign country, it’s normal for us to ask the way. Since we are not native 【1】 (发言者), we should ask for 【2】 (方向) in a proper way. Here are some tips.
● Starting the 【3】 (交谈)with a greeting is a must. If you want to get a nice explanation from a person who you meet with, begin by saying hello first. For example, if you want help from a person who is 【4】 (经过) by, you can say such as “Hello!”,“Good afternoon!” or “【5】 (原谅) me, could you please help me?”
● Know how to ask a question 【6】 (正确地). And it’s a good idea to use some modal verbs. For example, you can ask like “Excuse me! May I ask you how to get to the Eaton Center?” This sounds much more 【7】 (有礼貌的) than “Hi! How to get to the Eaton Center?”
● Don’t be afraid of using landmarks. Every city in the world has its own landmarks. You can save some time if you know what the important landmarks are in the city. There is no 【9】 (仓促) to get to the place you will go, or you may get lost. And don’t laugh at yourself if you truly get lost. We may all get lost now and then, 【10】 (尤其)when visiting a new city.
29、Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 55 I got when I was in high school.
The test was the final for a course. I remember waiting anxiously as my teacher Mr. Right handed out our papers one after another. It was a rather test. I heard my classmates groaning (叹息), and I could tell by the groans that the scores weren’t looking good.
Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, circled to draw attention , was my score, 55! I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that you wanted your classmates to see.“The scores were not very good, none of you 7 ,” Mr Right said. “The highest score in the class was a 55.”
A 55. That’s me! my sad look didn’t look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better.
I walked home alone that day with the low but high score. My mother knew that I had a big test that day and asked me as soon as I got home, “How did you do in your test?” “I got 55,” I said. A frown(皱眉) now stood on my mother’s face. I knew I had to immediately. “But Mum, I had the highest score in the class,” I proudly stated (陈述). I thought that explanation would make a difference. “You failed!!” my mother replied. “But it’s the highest!” I insisted. “I don’t care what scores others had, you failed. What matters is what you do!” my mother firmly (坚定地) said.
For years, my mother was in that way. It didn’t matter what others did, it only mattered what I did and that I did it excellently.
We often don’t understand the of good parents until we ourselves stand in the parents’ shoes. My mother’s words have carried me throughout life.
