二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Getting paid to stay in bed all day sounds pretty good, but what if someone pays you $ 23, 000 to stay in bed for two months? That’s the deal that a medical research team in France is offering to 24 volunteers.

The researchers are looking for volunteers to help them study the effects of weightlessness (失重状态) on the human body and find ways to stop problems. Lying in bed isn’t exactly the same as being weightless, but the effects are alike.

When astronauts spend a long time in an environment with no gravity, their bodies change in many ways. After several months, their hearts don’t beat as hard. Their muscles become smaller and weaker. Their bones may be broken more easily. There may also be changes in the astronauts’ immune systems (免疫系统) and sleep habits.

The study will take 88 days. During the first two weeks, the volunteers will be tested to make sure of their levels of fitness. Then they will spend 60 days lying in bed with their heads lower than their bodies. They will have to do everything while lying down, including eating, brushing their teeth, and going to the bathroom. The rule is that they must have at least one shoulder touching the bed at all times. The last two weeks of the study will be spent trying to build up the volunteers’ fitness again.

Volunteers must be men between the ages of 20 and 45 who are in perfect health. The researchers completed one study in April. A second study will take place from September to December.

    FACELESS

    by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

This is an amazing book about a girl named Maisie, who gets in an accident, and ends up having a face transplant. Part of Maisie’s face got burnt off in a fire, so now she has her cheeks and nose replaced by a different girl’s cheeks and nose. However, if you think about it, the idea seems quite scary. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and it had me hanging on its every word.

WE ARE ALL MADE OF MOLECULES

    by Susin Nielsen

The story focuses on two main characters, Stewart and Ashley. Despite missing his mother, Stewart decides to make a new life with Ashley when he and his dad move into her house. Ashley doesn’t like Stewart for his personality, but things turn even more complicated when a schoolmate, Jared, enters their lives. I LOVE this book because it teaches us that if we all put aside all of our differences, we can work together to solve problems in the world, no matter how big or small the problem might be.

    HOUSE OF WINDOWS

    by Alexia Casale

This book is about a 15-year-old boy named Nick who is at Cambridge University. While there he faces many problems, he is not helped by the fact that his mum is dead and his dad cares more for his work than for him. Luckily, this book has a happy ending.

    MIND YOUR HEAD

    by Juno Dawson

This book is a great mix of humour and advice, differing from the more formal help books that you might read. It won’t necessarily defeat your problem, but it will hand you the sword and encourage you to do it yourself.

【1】Which word can best describe FACELESS?

    A.Moving.

    B.Inspirational.

    C.Educational.

    D.Appealing.

【2】What does WE ARE ALL MADE OF MOLECULES tell us?

A.Different people can also work together.

B.Friendship is based on shared interests.

C.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

D.One false step will make a great difference.

【3】Which book will offer you fun and help you with your daily life?

    A.FACELESS.

    B.MIND YOUR HEAD.

    C.HOUSE OF WINDOWS.

D.WE ARE ALL MADE OE MOLECULES.

  • 24、Travelling with some of your favourite people is an exciting experience. If done well, group travelling can be the most thrilling experience ever, filled with games, laughter, and unforgettable memories. 【1】 Read on for some of the things you need to note and do for an enjoyable experience.

    【2】

Ideas are usually exciting when they are fresh. The longer you delay, the more you’ll find excuses not to go. Let all interested parties meet as soon as possible to decide on dates, locations and budget. It’s best to plan the trip three or four months in advance.

    Assign roles

For the trip to be successful, it has to be well organized. You’re going on a trip far from home, not the shopping mall. This is why the group should assign a leader who would be responsible for planning and organizing the trip. 【3】 Break them down further. For example, choose someone to handle booking a hotel and another person to take care of the meal.

    Budget pool

【4】 You can do a weekly or monthly payment plan before your trip. Once you decide how much would fund the trip, members can start contributing the money weekly or monthly. The leader would then use the money to pay for accommodations, meals, transportation and more while you’re on vacation. If there’s money left in the end, split it up or go wild one last night.

    Create a flexible itinerary(行程)

An easy way to create and share an itinerary is through Google Docs. Add the group members to the document and give them permission to edit it. Suggest one or two optional activities per day which do not require advance bookings, such as a local hike or museum. 【5】

    A.Start early.

    B.Get fresh ideas.

C.So how do you plan for your group trip?

D.Collect a set amount from everyone before your trip.

E.Don’t forget to create room for something unexpected.

F.Also, divide the other responsibilities as they arise so that everyone participates.

G.The group leader generally keeps in contact with everyone, handling most of the detailed work.
