二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   For 38-year-old Justin Herald, the journey to wealth began one Sunday morning at a church in Sydney, when he had a quarrel with one of the churchgoers.

“You have an attitude problem,” she told him.

The accusation sparked something in him, and the then-25-year-old borrowed $ 50 from his brother to have four T-shirts printed with the slogans: “I don't have an attitude problem, you have a perception problem" and “When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you”.

“It was the best $ 50 I ever spent,” laughs Herald. By the end of the morning he'd sold three of the four T-shirts. With the money, he had another six printed, then 12, then 24. “That first year the turnover was $ 980,000," he says.

His business, Attitude Inc, is now a multi-million dollar concern with a wide range of products selling in 3,500 stores across Australia. His success was due to clever marketing—the public loved the slogans—but also, he admits, luck. In those days there was very little competition in his sector of the clothing industry, and he was in the right place at the right time.

The media spotlight also helped, with people picking up on Herald's likeable personality and infectious passion for his business: the night of one TV appearance, 187 stores rang to get his products into their shops.

“The consumer liked the person behind the product. They really did support me as an individual as well as the brand,” he says.

Herald sold the business three years ago, by which time it was turning over $ 30 million a year, and now spends his time as a motivational speaker. His message: anyone can be financially successful if they set their mind to it. “You have to have a lot of stick ability——not everything is going to work the way you plan it.”

Money has meant he has been able to enjoy his other passion—fast cars—but essentially he says he's the same person he's always been. “Time and freedom and choice are more valuable than having a lot of money in the bank,” he says.

1Why did Herald have the slogans printed on the T-shirt?

A.To fight back the woman. B.To encourage himself.

C.To try a form of marketing. D.To show himself off.

2What happened to Herald after his appearance on TV?

    A.He opened 187 branches. B.He became a public figure.

C.He sold his business. D.He received more orders.

3Why did Herald give up his business three years ago?

A.He wanted to change his lifestyle. B.His business expected to lose money.

C.He feared to fall into the trap of wealth D.He wanted to be a professional speaker.

4What can we learn from Herald's story?

A.Time is money. B.Mindfulness pays off.

C.Passion is based on money. D.Luck is the key to success.

  • 22、As a self-described military brat (小家伙) , Kathryn Miller has always loved the armed forces. In the summer of 2020, Miller teamed up with her friend Kailyn Rowland to create a documentary for National History Day, a nonprofit organization that holds an annual contest for students. Their documentary, Women at West Point: Breaking Barriers of the Long Gray Line, tells the story of the first women who graduated from West Point in 1980.

In March, Miller and Rowland were announced to have been selected for a Special Recognition of Champions Award as “individuals who have made exceptional contributions to women in the Army” “What we did was never for an award or for recognition; it was about sharing the story of these women, so to receive the award was really special,” Miller said.

Miller and Rowland spent countless hours working on their documentary, reaching out to the 62 women of the class of 1980 and interviewing more than 25 percent of them. “This was hours and hours of research and interviews,” Miller said. “We did Face Times with the women, we met in person, we called them, and so we had so much information, so many news articles going back 40 years. “Miller, whose mom was a veteran (老兵) and dad was a teacher at the United States Military Academy, lived in West Point as a child. “I always saw female cadets (学员) , and it always seemed like, ‘Oh, boys and girls, that’s completely normal, ‘so it was such a shock to me when I realized that girls didn’t always have that opportunity. “While making this documentary, Miller also realized her love for sharing other people’s stories. “I came to realize how much power there is in getting the story right, “she said, “And we were able to experience the gratitude from these women for sharing their stories and showing them that the younger generation really appreciates the doors they opened for us.

  • 23、   The Assassin's Creed series has been about building immersive (沉浸式的)and accurate historical worlds. As their newest game releases f Assassins Creed Origins, they have also released their Discovery Tours. These tours give players a chance to walk the streets of ancient Egypt, explore Alexandria and the pyramids, and learn about wildlife and geography. For students, experiencing the ancient world in this interactive way can be more interesting and effective than just reading a textbook or watching a documentary about what they are studying.

Assassins Creed is not the only game series that can be educational either. What is important about the role of historical games is the level of choice. When watching a film, students are passive receivers of content. However, when playing a game students have an active role to play in history. A focus on choice and consequence is an important element of teaching and understanding history, so historical games can be a valuable teaching tool even if they aren't completely historically accurate. They have the power to immerse students in faraway worlds and allow them to think critically about cause and consequence, think about why historical events unfolded the way they did, and even think about possible alternative outcomes. All of these are critical for historical thinking processes. No longer do students need to rely only on reading textbooks or on instructors for knowledge.

When carrying this out in your class, remember that not all students enjoy playing video games, but they can still be a valuable learning tool. The instructor also needs to be an active facilitator and taking note of teachable moments. A video game is not going to teach a class ; it requires an awesome instructor to make everything come together. With the power of video games, ancient worlds no longer need to be limited to the pages of a textbook.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “this interactive way“ in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.Walking an ancient street.

    B.Playing a new game.

    C.Reading a textbook.

    D.Watching a documentary.

【2】What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Assassins Creed?

A.Why it is different from the film.

    B.Why it gains popularity.

    C.How it benefits teaching.

    D.How it came into being.

【3】Who plays a core role in game-aided teaching?

    A.The teachers.

    B.The players.

    C.The designers.

    D.The audiences.

【4】What's the key message of this text?

A.A vivid description of ancient architecture.

B.An account of a new history learning method.

C.A detailed explanation of a social problem.

D.An online advertisement of a stylish trend.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jack,a clerk at the local bank, was wandering alone on the street. It was a cold, silent winter night. His mind was on his wife Linda, who had been in a car accident two months ago and was now lying in a hospital bed, waiting for more money for her operation.Jack had sold everything he had,and he had tried his best to borrow money from all the people and banks he could. But the real world is cruel.

A large amount of money was still needed. To Jack,it would mean a great deal of suffering to see his wife die without any help.“I have only one option left,”Jack said to himself. Then he went to the bank, his workplace, again. For several days,he observed the bank and planned a theft

The next day,he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal:he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm,the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However,at that moment,Jack was in the bathroom, and the guards didn't notice him,of course. When the noises coming from the street were replaced by silence and everything turned dark,Jack came out from the bathroom. He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase.

He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools,he then easily opened the doors of the safes. The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later,Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.
