23、 I cannot stress too much the importance of watching your opponent (对手), of knowing exactly where he is on the tennis court and what he is doing. It is usually possible to work out the pattern of his game very early in a match. Test him at the front of the court. Try hitting one or two balls up high to see what his shots are like.
Now and again it may be good idea to give your opponent an opportunity of making a mistake. If, early in the match, it seems that he is a very accurate player, but not a forceful one, then you should tempt (引诱) him to play a winning shot. They will try to play an attacking game, but they cannot quite finish it off. The way to break up their steady game may be by putting them into the front of the court.
It is obviously wiser to try to decide at the beginning of the match whether your opponent is weaker on his left-hand or on his right-hand side, and then play a little more than fifty percent of your shots down that side. A number of players experience more trouble than others in the back comers of the court-always be ready to recognize this weakness. Perhaps an opponent has a favourite backhand shot, but lacks certainty with his forehand shot. Tempt him to play the forehand shot.
There are advantages in learning as much as possible about another player even before you play him. When you know, in a competition, who your next opponent will be, try to watch him play beforehand. It is only under match conditions that his weaknesses are likely to show—you are certain to pick up some information, even if it’s a basic thing such as slowness in reaching the front of the court. My team always pool their knowledge of their opponents so that rarely does a member walk onto a court without knowing what to expect.
【1】What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To advise tennis players to play accurately rather than forcefully.
B.To advertise the good performance of the writer’s team.
C.To stress the importance of avoiding making mistakes.
D.To tell tennis players how to find out an opponent’s weaknesses.
【2】What should a player do if his opponent has difficulty playing shots one side?
A.Hit one or two balls up high.
B.Put the opponent into the front of the court.
C.Play more shots to his opponent’s weaker side.
D.Tempt his opponent to play his favouritc backhand shot.
【3】Before playing a match, what is a player advised to do?
A.Observe his opponent playing match.
B.Watch his opponent's daily practice.
C.Share information with the other members on his team.
D.Think of a way to slow down his opponent on the court.
24、“I don't speak English”—these are the first words I learned when I came to America. Soon I was able to pronounce the four words clearly, and said them whenever an American tried to talk to me. This answer was very effective (有效的) at ending our conversation and saving me from another uncomfortable situation, or I would have to communicate in a language that I was not familiar with.
Before coming to the States, I thought I knew English pretty well. But the truth is that the grammar-based and vocabulary-based English that is taught in overseas (海外的) schools is not the English people speak in America.
But fear not! Once you are in America, you can immediately begin to bridge the gap (弥补差距) between the learned English that you have already known, and the spoken English that is all around you. To do this, first of all, it is important not to fear when you realize that you may not be as prepared for daily communication as you thought. For me, as soon as I stopped worrying about my accent and started speaking, I made rapid progress. Often the people didn't notice my mistakes because they were so glad to finally be able to communicate with me.
Another good idea is to listen carefully and pay attention to the way in which ideas are expressed. For example, if you are working hard and you want to stop working and rest for a little while, you can either say “I would like to stop working and rest for a while” or “I want to take a quick break from work”. The first sentence, I quickly learned, sounds dry and too formal for any kind of communication, while the second is an idiom(成语) that is widely used in American English conversation.
Finally, use what you have already known—the vocabulary, the grammar and the spelling. Try to use these into the spoken language for more impressive and accurate(精确的) speaking results.
【1】What's the main idea of this passage?
A. You'd better say “I don't speak English” in the USA.
B. How you can improve your spoken English in the USA.
C. Idioms are widely used to express your ideas in the USA.
D. Listening is the best way to improve your spoken English in the USA.
【2】At first the writer preferred to use the sentence “I don't speak English” to ________.
A. admit he is a foreigner
B. save much time for himself
C. prevent himself from being laughed at
D. avoid getting upset in communicating with others
【3】What's the problem with the English taught outside the English-speaking countries?
A. It is quite different from what the natives speak.
B. It is taught in boring and wrong grammar.
C. It has nothing to do with English.
D. It has a too small vocabulary.
【4】When did the writer make rapid progress in spoken English?
A. As soon as he paid attention to the way Americans spoke.
B. The minute he found what has been learned useless.
C. The moment he got rid of the fear of speaking.
D. Immediately he arrived in the USA.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a baby,my parents always gave me anything I waned. Then my dad died when l was three, and I got even more stuff as my mom, fiends and family tried to make me feel better. Mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world changed.
My mom had thought buying houses was a good way to invest her money. But the real estate (房地产) market crashed. I went from the kid who got an iPod when his tooth fell out and who had the coolest house to hang out in, to literally haying nowhere to stay. Mom's best fiend Auntie Loren, took us in until Mom could figure out what to do.
After the real estate crash, when I asked fora new toy, or bike, or even to see a movie Mom would say "maybe for your birthday" or "I'm sorry honey, but we can't really afford that now." I didn't know it then, but Mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games were not helping my mom, who was already a widow, deal with her feelings about our new crisis-our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing "no”. So for a year or two I kept asking.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said I wanted a new video gaming system . I didn't know it was expensive. All knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On my birthday believing that I would get what I wanted, I opened the gift.
