二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How do you make sure whether a watermelon is perfectly ripe? Well, one theory is that if you knock hard on the outside, the sound you hear will help determine if it’s ready to eat. That theory led to a huge online debate in China about what kind of people tend to engage in the art of “watermelon knocking”.

The discussion, which thousands of people contributed to on the Chinese micro-blogging site Sina Weibo, was kicked off by an unknown event thousands of miles away in Italy.

It all began when a Chinese social media user posted the picture of a sign in an Italian supermarket asking customers not to knock on the watermelons. The sign was stuck in a full box of watermelons which read, “Please stop knocking on the watermelons. They will not respond to it!”

There was no indication that the supermarket was targeting this message at customers with Chinese heritage. The sign was in Italian, not Mandarin. But somehow it was taken as an attack on a practice which some Chinese observers regarded as being unique to their national customs.

Many shared jokes aimed at the supermarket sign.

Online users are keen to show they know better, especially on the subject of watermelons.

A quick online search will reveal that Chinese social media users are not alone in their thinking. Watermelon knocking and listening for a hollow sound is indeed a nearly universal concept. It even appears in films. The popular Russian cartoon, Nu, pogodi!, includes watermelon knocking as part of an episode.

There are no absolute guarantees about what to do when it comes to choosing fruit. But at the risk of causing an international diplomatic incident we would suggest some common ground about what to look for to choose the perfect watermelon.

Feel the weight of the melon. The heavier, the better.

Press on the watermelon. It should feel firm and if it springs back, it’s ready to eat.

Look at the markings on the melon. A yellow patch on one end indicates it’s ready.

Of course if all these fail, you could always, knock and wait for a reply.

【1】What was the cause of the heated discussion?

    A.Whether the watermelon is ripe.

    B.The art of watermelon knocking.

C.The picture of a sign in an Italian supermarket.

D.The traditional Italian customs in the supermarket.

【2】The author writes the article in a(n) ________ way.

    A.serious

    B.approving

    C.critical

    D.humorous

【3】Which method of selecting watermelon is not suggested by the author in the text?

    A.Pressing

    B.Observing markings

    C.Feeling the weight

    D.Waiting for a response

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

    A.To present a research result.

B.To give practical advice by telling a story.

C.To introduce the traditional customs of Italy.

D.To bring up an international diplomatic incident.

  • 22、As an English teacher, I found that English slang (俚语) can be more difficult for those who learn English as a second language to understand. This became clear when I was talking to one of my students, Cathy, in Japan. “Excuse me, Miss White. I want to go to buy a notebook outside the school.” “It’s bucketing outside,” I said. It is an English slang expression which means “it is raining”. However, she didn’t seem to understand what I said.

The point I’m trying to get across is that being puzzled about English slang in the beginning is perfectly natural because it is what makes the language special. But learning some slang is a fantastic way of understanding the culture of a country. English does have some interesting slang. Here is some of my favorite slang which is common in Northern Ireland.

To keel over: If someone keels over, it basically means that he/she has fallen over because he/she has passed out or died.

To be in bed with your head: This is used to describe someone who has gone to bed because he/she has a headache.

To upset the apple cart: This means that someone has caused trouble or upset someone’s plans.

Dead on: This means “exactly right”, “perfect”, or shows that someone agrees with what you’ve said.

Slang can be difficult to learn but it’s really impressive when you get it right! Slang also helps you sound friendly, so it’s great for making friends. If you can use some of these English expressions in a conversation, people will be amazed!

【1】How did Cathy feel when the author said “It’s bucketing outside”?

    A.She was unhappy.

    B.She was surprised.

    C.She was worried.

    D.She was puzzled.

【2】What does the author say about slang?

A.It tells us the history of a country.

B.It is created by language teachers.

C.It shows the culture of a country.

D.It is used to impress foreigners.

【3】If someone says “Does the word mean ‘elevator’?”, what could you say?

    A.I keel over.

    B.You’re dead on.

    C.You upset the apple cart.

D.I’m in bed with my head.

【4】In which part of a newspaper can we read this text?

    A.Culture.

    B.Science.

    C.Travel.

    D.Lifestyle.

  • 23、Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops.

In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.

Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.

From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.

Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

【1】We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of .

    A.loud noises

    B.some crops

    C.video cameras

    D.angry bees

【2】As mentioned in the passage, Lucy .

    A.works by herself in Africa

B.needs to test more elephant groups

    C.has stopped elephants eating crops

D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms

【3】Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?

A.To record the sound of bees.

B.To make a video of elephants.

C.To see if elephants would run away.

D.To find out more about the behavior of bees.

【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.

B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.

C.Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.

D.Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.

  • 24、Making my way slowly along the cliff (悬崖) face, I gazed (注视) at the great appearance of each temple I passed. As I entered the first cave and looked up at the feitian—an imagined flying god in Buddhist art, I wondered how many hundreds of thousands of others, from near and far, have looked at the same great paintings and statues.

Sometime between the 4th and 14th century, Mogao was an important   Buddhist center   connecting East Asia and South Asia. Hundreds of caves were carved into a cliff face running along the Daquan River. Located on the ancient Silk Road, one of the great trade routes in ancient times, it created an environment of artistic and cultural exchange between the different cultures.

My personal adventure to Dunhuang had taken me, by way of train and bus, from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, and through the Jiayu Pass. From there, I continued on through Yumen Pass, also known as the Jade Gate, and crossed the Gobi Desert to find this small and sleepy desert town, and to see these caves for myself.

As I explored the temples, I was amazed by the vividness of the paintings and statues. It was almost as though they were painted or carved the day before. I had discovered the reason why people travel.

There are more than 2, 000 coloured statues that were carved 1, 500 years ago. More than 1, 400statues are well-protected so they can still be appreciated. During the thousand years of artistic activity, the style of the wall paintings and statues changed. The early caves show greater Indian and Western influences, while during the Tang Dynasty the influences of Chinese painting styles became noticeable.

Today, the Mogao Caves stand out from the desert like a shinning pearl on the Silk Road.

【1】Which is the writer’s travelling route according to paragraph 3?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

    【2】What made the writer amazed?

    A.The well-protected temples.

    B.The large number of tourists.

    C.The preserved coloured statues.

D.Some paintings made not long ago.

【3】Which of the following best describes the wall paintings and statues?

    A.Highly developed.

    B.Plain.

    C.Culturally mixed.

    D.Noticeable.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Style Changes Over Years

B.The Pearl of the Silk Road

    C.Influential Western Culture

    D.My Views on Dunhuang

  • 26、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

They’d been planning this forever. From her birth, most likely. Mya's mother, Helena loved hosting parties. And Aunt Beatrice loved birthdays. Together, they'd make her Sweet Sixteen a hundred times bigger, bolder, and brighter than it needed to be. They selected a theme every year and stuck to it. Her fourteenth had been the “Snow White” and her ninth had been the “Frozen”. They never told her what the theme was the day before. She'd just wake up her birthday morning, a brand new birthday outfit (一套服装) laid neatly on her dresser (an outfit related to the theme, of course) and she would open her door to see the adventure that lay ahead of her that day.

Mya had a few guesses as to what this year’s theme would be. A play on the words “Sweet Sixteen” was likely — a candy themed party, perhaps? But she’d had a baking party a few years ago — and Helena was anything but repetitive. Mya didn't have any interest in cars, so she doubted a sports-car party was on the menu. She’d tried to look through her mother’s purchase history online, but her mother had been careful enough to delete everything recent. So the only clue left was the birthday outfit she would receive the next morning.

May 1st, Mya woke. The bright sunlight begged her eyes to open and she loved the day that her birthday took place. It was always nice out on May 1st and it never rained. This morning was no different than her previous birthdays. She sat up in her bed and looked to her dresser before slipping out of bed and inspecting the outfit. She unfolded it and held it against her body, seeing how it was like. It reached down, just above the ankle. Mya dressed, eyed herself in the mirror and found it was not so much a pretty outfit as she had received before. It was totally one for blue-collar workers!
