二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、April 22nd every year marks the beginning of Earth Day. Started in the year 1970, it is now celebrated in more than 190 countries each year. Every year, the event is celebrated under a different theme. The theme for 2016 is “Trees for the Earth”.

However, Earth Day is not just an event to be celebrated on one specific day. It is primarily a reminder for all to do our rightful duty every day to save our planet. Below, we have made a list of four things you can do to celebrate Earth Day (apart from planting trees).

Leave your cars at home. Cars, being the greatest source of air pollution, can be left at home this weekend. Travelling via public transport is the better option. Ride a bike or walk if your workplace is not that far away from your home.

Be a little dirty. We don't mean it “that” way. We simply mean to say, don't take a bath. A day or two without a bath won't harm you, but it will certainly do a lot of good for our planet. A daily shower isn't a matter of health; it's a matter of comfort.

Volunteer yourself. This is one of the best things you can do. It will do you good too. Join other like-minded individuals in a common task, such as planting trees, cleaning a park or simply coming up with ways you can preserve mother Earth.

Green-up your home. This is one of the most common things that people do, that is, switch off your lights. However, this is not something you should do just for a day and for only an hour. Switch off all power electricity points whenever they are not in use.

You know what the best way to celebrate Earth Day is? Extend your celebrations. That's right! Do something every day that will improve your surroundings to make the planet a better place to live in. Always remember that every step, every action counts.

    【1】Why is Earth Day started?

A.To help people live a healthier life.

B.To call on people to plant trees.

    C.To help protect the environment.

    D.To use less natural recourses.

【2】What does the author mean by saying “Be a little dirty”?

    A.To save water.

    B.Never to take a bath.

    C.Don't shower on Earth Day.

D.Showering daily is bad to health.

【3】What is the best way to celebrate Earth Day according to the author?

A.To go to work on foot.

    B.To be a volunteer.

    C.To save electricity.

    D.To do small things daily.

    【4】Where is the passage from?

    A.An environmental magazine

    B.A science report

    C.A geography text

    D.A travel advertisement

  • 22、Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

【1】The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to _______.

    A. use for their schoolwork

    B. access the Internet

    C. work at home

    D. connect them to libraries

【2】Which of the following is true about Westlake College?

    A. All teachers use computers.

    B. 1500 students have laptops.

    C. It is an old college in America.

    D. Students there can do everything.

【3】A window on the world in the last paragraph means that students can _______.

    A. attend lectures on information technology

    B. travel around the world

    C. get information from around the world

    D. have free laptops

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The program is successful.

    B. The program is not workable.

    C. The program is too expensive.

    D. We don’t know the result of the program yet.

  • 23、Fishing is a popular activity and every fisherman knows the rule: Keep the big ones, throw the smaller ones back. The idea behind it is simple —the larger fish are probably older. If you keep the smaller ones, they won’t be able to reproduce, and the fish population is in danger.

But fishing out the largest fish from a population has an unwanted effect: Over time, fewer adult fish get really big. If only the smaller fish reproduce(繁殖), then future generations become smaller. This is an example of evolution(进化)in action.

One scientist, Dr. David Conover, has spent the last decade studying the effects of the “keep the big ones” rule and if they can be reversed(颠倒).

To set up his experiment, Conover and his team caught hundreds of silverside fish and divided them into six groups. For two groups, Conover followed the “keep the large ones” rule and took out the biggest fish.

For two other groups, he removed only the small fish. For the last two groups, he removed fish at random (随意的).

After five years, he measured the fish in each group. In the two groups where the largest fish were regularly removed, the average(平均) fish size was smaller than the average size in the other groups. Here was evolution in action: If only small fish survive(生存) to reproduce, then future generations of fish will also tend(倾向) to be small.

For the second five years of his experiment, Conover changed the rules and took fish randomly(随意) from each group. At the end of the experiment, he found that the fish that were in the “keep the large ones” group for the first five years had started to get larger again, although he calculated(计算) it would take at least

12 years for the fish in that group to return to their original(原始的) size.

In other words, it takes less time to shrink(变小) than it does to recover(恢复).

【1】The underlined word “it” (Line 2) refers to “_____”

    A.the activity

    B.the fish

    C.the rule

    D.the fisherman

【2】Why do many people follow the “keep the big ones, throw the small ones back” rule?

A.It helps to protect fish numbers.

B.It helps to protect fish size.

C.It is the custom in most countries.

D.They will be punished if they don’t.

【3】What did Conover find after the first five years of his experiment?

A.The “keep the big ones” rule made no difference to fish size.

B.The “keep the big ones” rule made fish smaller on average.

C.The “keep the big ones” rule made the fish bigger on average.

D.The “keep the big ones” rule affected all fish populations in the same way.

【4】What can we find according to the experiment?

A.If small fish reproduce, the future generations will be smaller.

B.There was no largest fish in “keep the large ones” group for the first five years.

C.it would take 10 years for the fish to return to their original size.

D.It takes less time to become bigger than it does to recover

【5】What is the author’s intention(目的) in writing this article?

A.To encourage people to fish more carefully.

B.To urge governments to change the rules of fishing.

C.To describe the results of a scientific experiment.

D.To introduce the rules of fishing to readers.

Jim loved adventures when he was a little boy. He was also a strong-minded boy who didn't give up easily.

One day when he was thirteen years old, he asked some friends to climb a mountain with him. The boys agreed and they even decided to camp at the top of the mountain. Then after they got ready, they set off. It was a beautiful day and the boys started climbing the mountain happily after they got to the foot of it. The mountain was very tall and it was tiring for the young boys to climb it, but everyone was passionate about the activity and no one complained.

When it got dark, they finally reached the top and they all shouted happily. Then Jim started counting. To his shock, there was one missing.

    “Where is Mike?” he asked.

All the boys looked around and they didn't see Mike around. They got concerned.

“Mike, Mike…” they started shouting. But there was no response. Worrying that Mike might be in danger, the boys knew they must return to find him. However after climbing the mountain for hours, they were all tired, so Jim asked the other boys to camp there and then he went down the mountain to find Mike alone.

Jim left the boys and started going down the mountain with a flashlight. Though tired, hungry and cold, he still didn't give up because of worrying about his friend. But things got even worse when his flashlight suddenly stopped working,

Jim almost became desperate. Out of despair, he started calling his friend’s name. To his joy, finally, he got a weak response. Mike was just nearby.

Jim felt his way in the darkness and walked toward his friend. Luckily the moon got out of the cloud and Jim could finally see again. He found his friend who had been trapped in a hole for hours. Jim managed to pull Mike up from the hole, and Mike was finally safe. However, Jim was so tired that he fell and rolled down a slope and lost consciousness.
