  • 24、   I am a girl called Yuan Ningfei from Beijing. Now I live in London and I’m a student at City of London School for Girls. In my school, music is not just for people who play an instrument. It is for everyone.

We have music lessons once every week. Not everyone plays a musical instrument, but everyone is expected to learn a little bit about music. After all, it is never too late to pick up an instrument. During our lessons, we learn about musicians like Beethoven and Schumann. We not only listen to the music they composed (作曲), but also learn about their personal history.

We have concerts each grade. And it’s not just musicians who take part in our concerts. Everyone can take part! The students play the main role. Teachers give non-musicians some simple percussion (打击乐器) instruments because they’re easier to play. When I was in Grade 7, my classmates and I performed(表演) for our parents. I have a few friends who don’t play music. But they played these percussion instruments for that concert. I asked them what it felt like. One of my friends said, “It made me feel confident even if I didn’t think I could be there!”

Except the concerts, we have many other musical activities as well. Last month, I took part in the Young Musician of the Year Competition, which was organized (组织)by my school this year. I played the piano and won an award (奖项). I felt like I was a star performer onstage. I was so proud!

We all love music, and we believe music is an important part of life and that everyone should have the right to enjoy it.

My dad was in the radio business when I was growing up. He always got tickets to a lot of different sporting events, and in 1984 we went to Madison Square Garden during Michael Jordan’s rookie season (新秀赛季). My dad took me to see Jordan put on a show.

I remember looking at my dad as an eight-year-old kid and saying, “I want to be Michael Jordan one day.” Dad laughed a bit and then turned to me and said, “Son, I love you, but you’re probably not going to be Michael Jordan.” Then my dad pointed to the man standing next to Jordan at the time, his agent David Falk. My dad explained how Falk worked closely with players, and since then, that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

Years passed and I became a sports agent. My Job is simply to help professional players find jobs. No two days are the same, which I find exciting. If it’s in-season, I’m talking to players about how they are feeling and how they’re performing from week to week. During the off-season, I try to make sure players’ lives are managed, so they can focus on (专注于) improving on the field.

Not everyone can be a sports star, but it’s more possible to work on the business side of sports. I always tell the students I meet to go out of their way to introduce themselves to people. Relationships are so important in this business, and they can take you a long way.

    3David Falk was ________.

    A.Michael Jordan’s agent B.Michael Jordan’s teammate

    C.The writer’s agent D.The writer’s teammate

4Why does the writer think his job is exciting?

    A.Because he likes Michael Jordan.

B.Because no two days are the same.

C.Because he can help players in many ways.

D.Because he wants to be a basketball player.

5What does the writer think is important in his business?

    A.Knowledge. B.Working experience

    C.Relationships. D.Abilities of communication.

At the first Olympic marathon in 1896, runners ran a shorter course (跑道) than today’s 42.195-kilometre event. Even so, the winner finished the race within three hours. However, runners have improved. On Oct. 12, 2019, 34-year-old Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya became the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. Clocking in at 1:59:40, Kipchoge crossed the finish line. “No one is limited. This shows the spirit of sport,” Kipchoge told the BBC after the race in Vienna, Austria.

Besides Kipchoge’s strong willpower and excellent physical condition, science and technology helped him achieve success. Hills and turns slow runners down, so Kipchoge’s team picked the best course in Vienna among many. The city’s cool and dry weather was also important. It helped keep Kipchoge’s body running better throughout the race. A special pair of shoes also played a big part. According to The New York Times, the shoes Kipchoge wore were designed to help anyone wearing them in a race perform much better.

One other key to this achievement was Kipchoge’s pacing strategy (节奏策略). He ran with a dream team formed by sports scientists. Five runners formed a V-shape in front of Kipchoge, reducing drag (空气阻力), and two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. Kipchoge stayed in the centre of the formation (队形). The team changed members every five kilometres. There was also a car driving 15 metres in front of everyone, casting a bright light on the road to keep them on track.

“Few world records today are technologyfree,” noted The Telegraph. Though hard work is still the most important part of sportsmen’s achievements, science and technology are helping them do better.

    根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

C.cool and dry weather D.a special pair of shoes

3What did Kipchoge’s dream team probably look like? (○= Kipchoge, ●= other runners)

    A. B. C. D.

4What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A.To discuss what the spirit of sport is.

D.To show how science and technology help sportsmen perform better.
