四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

I’m punctual(守时的) in my work life, but not in my personal life. However, it’s OK in my country. We, Brazilians, are always late: if the party is at 8, everyone shows up at 10 and everyone, including the host, is happy that we are on time. Cheers!

    Lisa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

I’m a Japanese working in Colombia. It is good manners to arrive a little late for a party in Colombia, which I have never understood. I always try to be early for everything, or I consider it impolite.

    Mike Tokyo, Japan

Of course! My friends and I all believe that showing up late for an appointment or class is an insult(冒犯) to the person(s) we are meeting. It seems to say, “My time is more important than yours.”

    Vera Lausanne, Switzerland

Not only am I “punctual”, but I am always early for most events in my life. The secret is (and it really works!): I keep all the clocks (except my computer) in my life 10 minutes fast!

    Wang Cai  Shenzhen, China

For an appointment, I always make sure I’m on time. Once I had a friend who was always late for every meeting. If we made it at 9 and it was a 45-minute trip for her, then she would arrive at 9:45. I liked her a lot, but could not stand the unpunctuality.

    Bud Berlin, Germany

1If you attend a Brazilian’s party and are 2 hours late, the host will ______________.

    A. ask you why B. think you are impolite

    C. think it doesn’t matter D. ask you to drink with him

2Where is it OK to arrive a little late for a party?

    A. In Japan. B. In Colombia. C. In Germany. D. In Switzerland.

3Suppose it’s ten o’clock in the morning. What does Wang Cai’s watch say?

    A. 9:50 am. B. 10:00 am. C. 10:10 am D. 10:20 am.

4Who was always late for every meeting?

    A. Vera B. Vera’s friend C. Bud D. Bud’s friend

    5The material is probably from_____________.

    A. a website B. guidebook C. a school notice D. a science magazine

  • 25、Do You Go To Sleep In Class?

The “Acronym”, our student newspaper, reports that most students go to sleep at 1: 30 a. m. Even if that’s an exaggeration(夸张), it’s too close to the truth. Scientists say teenagers should sleep nine hours each night. But that’s hard to do.

Some even “pull all-nighters”. These are lazy students who have homework due to(到期) the next day that they haven’t done. In the morning they don’t look healthy and you can tell who has been doing it.

One of my classmates did a survey(调查) on the problem. She found that most kids pull all-nighters to finish homework, but some do it for other reasons, such as playing computer games!

Maybe our lack of sleep is because of laziness — I think I’m a lazy student — or maybe it’s because we have too much to do in American high schools.

I usually go to bed around midnight. If I stayed up past 1: 30 a. m., I wouldn’t get any work done. I’d be falling asleep at my computer. My classes begin at 7:30 a.m. I’m partly awake in my first class. By the second, I’m slightly tired and sleepy. By my third class, I’m sleepy. By midday I’m finally wide-awake. But by 3: 00 p. m., I’m slowing down again.

Most American high schools seem to have such a problem.

High school classes start at 7: 30 a. m., so students have to wake up one and a half hours before that to get ready and catch the bus. It’s believed that lack of sleep can do harm to both grades and health.

Some schools are paying attention. Classes in those schools start at 8:30 a. m.

1What’s the problem talked about in the passage?

A.Many kids have too much homework to do.

B.Many teenagers don’t have enough sleep.

C.Many children are crazy about playing computer games.

D.Many kids are too lazy to finish their homework on time.

2The underlined expression “pull all-nighters” most probably means ________.

    A.开夜车 B.上夜班 C.睡懒觉 D.补作业

3Which of the following is NOT a reason mentioned in the passage?

    A.Laziness. B.Homework. C.Housework. D.Computer games.

4What’s the idea suggested at the end of the passage?

A.Later start of classes. B.Less homework.

C.Going to bed early. D.Eating healthy food.

  • 26、   Do you remember where you were when you heard about a traffic accident of involving (牵涉) a close friend? The answer is probably yes. Do you remember what you were doing on your birthday that year? You may have to think a little harder.

People remember bad memories more easily and in greater detail (细节) than good ones. Why is that? A new study found that people do this because of evolutionary (进化的) reasons.

Elizabeth Ken Singer and her partners at Boston College, US, did a study looking at this. They found negative feelings like fear and sadness cause an increase in brain (大脑) activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain that controls memories. So memories caused by negative feelings are kept in greater detail than other kinds of memories.

For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.

According to Ken Singer, it is easy to understand this from an evolutionary (进化论的) point of view. She said that people pay attention to dangerous information so they can use that information to guide their actions and save their lives. They can also use it to plan for similar events in the future.

The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember bad memories. This line of research could help solve stress disorders (失调).

1According to the passage, good memories are remembered ______ than bad ones.

    A.more in detail B.less often C.longer D.more easily

2The underlined word "negative" in the third paragraph means "______" in English.

    A.simple B.bad C.unforgettable D.similar

    3When a girl breaks into tears, ______.

A.she probably has a stress disorder.

B.she can control her memories well.

C.her brain activity will be kept in greater detail.

    D.her brain activity will increase.

4What does the writer want to tell us by using the example of a man holding a knife?

A.People pay more attention to dangerous information.

B.People can learn from bad memories.

C.People can plan for similar events in the future.

D.People have the ability to save themselves from danger.

5What would be a good title for the passage?

    A.Brain activity controls memories.

    B.How we remember bad memories.

C.Bad memories are easier to remember.

D.Bad memories can cause stress disorders.
