21、Trump smoked heavily. He got lung cancer when he was sixty years old. He only had six months to live. His chance for recovery was 1 in 500.He lived in Baldwin Street, in New Zealand, a very special street in the world. What he did with cancer was also special.
He could see the worry, depression and anger in his life. He wondered, “If illness can be caused by negativity(消极性), can wellness be created by positivity?”
He decided to make an experiment of himself. Laughing was one of the most positive activities he knew. He watched all the funny movies he could find. He read funny stories. He enjoyed talk shows and cross talks. He asked his friends to call him whenever they said, heard or did something funny. And he also told jokes to his friends and his family. He even built a club called “Laugh and Life”.
At first, his pain was so great that he could not sleep. Then, he found laughing for 10 minutes could relieve the pain(减轻疼痛) for several hours so he could sleep.
He fully recovered from his illness and lived another 20 happy and healthy years in the end. He thought his success was because of the love of his family and friends, and laughing.

22、 A new series of Chinese Maths textbooks was published in the UK following the success of the previous edition, with an expert saying Chinese Maths textbooks are generally more difficult for UK students. However, new Chinese Maths textbooks teach UK students learning skills.
Yi Ke Yi Lian, or One Lesson, One Exercise, is a series of popular textbooks for primary and junior high schools in Shanghai. For about 20 years, this series has helped students to practice what they have learned in class. This summer, the Maths textbook series was published in the UK.
The British version has 11 volumes (册), as there are 11 grades from primary school to high school in the UK. The publishers cut out part of the content in the Chinese version to go with the curriculum setting (课程安排) there. They also changed some terms (术语) and background knowledge. But the overall difficulty level is the same.
The move follows the British government’s efforts to learn from Shanghai’s Maths teaching methods starting from last year. In the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA.国际学生评估项目), Shanghai students got the first place on the Maths exam while British students got 24th place.
In September, the British government invited 60 of Shanghai’s top Maths teachers to British schools to share their teaching experience. A number of teachers from the UK also visited Shanghai for experience.
“It seems that the Shanghai teaching methodology (方法) uses resources much more effectively,” said Liz Truss, a government education officer. We have stagnated (停滞) in our Maths performance for the last 15 years, and it’s time for us to learn and apply good practices.”

23、 Rabbit Shiny and tortoise (乌龟) Smily were neighbours. One day they were reading a story about their great grandfathers: Shiny’s and Smily’s great grandfathers decided to have a race. While Shiny’s great grandfather went to sleep during the race, Smily’s great grandfather won the race by slowly walking towards the finish line.
Smily said, “If your great grandfather didn’t go to sleep, my great granddad might never win. So his win was not a real win.”
The next day there was a notice in the jungle (丛林) newspaper. It said that there would be a race and the winner would win many prizes. The race started from the bear’s house. From there, the runners had to cross the river. But most of the animals could not both run fast and swim fast. So they didn’t know what to do. Shiny and Smily made a plan.
Shiny ran, while smily was sitting on his back. He and other animals, like the deer, reached the river side at the same time. But they saw the swift water and stood there because they were worried. None of them liked the idea of crossing the river. Smily quickly got into the water and Shiny sat on his back. Smily started swimming. Soon they reached the other side of the river. Shiny got down from Smily’s back and Smily climbed on Shiny’s back again. Shiny ran fast. They reached the finish line first.

24、 There are about 80,000,000 mines (地雷) under the ground in more than 60 countries. It is difficult and dangerous to clear these mines. About 50 people including many children were killed or hurt each day. In 2003, APOPO, a Dutch research company that trains the animals, came up with the idea of using rats to search for the mines.
The animal trainers found that a kind of rats from Africa were clever and had a sharp sense of smell. The rats were about 75 cm long and weighed about 1.35kg, light enough to run across a minefield without setting off the mines.
In January 2004, the APOPO started this project. First, the trainers let the 4-week-old baby rats get familiar with humans. A few weeks later, the rats were not afraid of people and the things around them anymore. Then they were trained to connect a click sound with food. After the rats had learned that, the trainers then taught them to tell the difference between the smell of mines and other smells. When the rats could do it, the click was sounded and they were given a bit of banana. The method was called clicker training. "The training isn't easy," said trainer Abdullah Mchomvu. "You have to be patient. Sometimes I get angry, but then again, I tell myself these are animals".
After nine months' training, the rats were taken to a minefield. They ran across the minefield, stopped, sat and searched the ground to tell the domineers (排雷员) that they smelt out a mine. Then the mine was cleared. It had taken two domineers a day to clear a 200 ㎡ minefield, but with the help of two rats they could finish it in two hours.
The rats and the domineers saved thousands of lives, "The rats did this job much better than we expected. So far they have helped to make almost 2,000,000 ㎡of land safe. "They are heroes". Said Bart Weetjens, the head of the APOPO.
