  • 24、Holmes said, “Somebody sent a letter with five pips (桔核) in it from India, and arrived seven weeks later to kill John’s uncle. Then they sent five pips from Scotland and arrived three days later to kill John’s father. Now they have sent five pips to John from London!”

“The letters are all from sea ports (海港). The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied.

“Very good, Watson! And John’s enemy is in London already!”

“Well, I hope they won’t kill young John,” I said.

But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo station. Holmes was very angry about it.

“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I’m going to find them, if it’s the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.

At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased, he said, “I know the names of John’s enemies! And now I’m going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange and put them in an envelope (信封). On it he wrote “S. H. for J. C.”

“I’m sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”

“How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.

“Ship’s papers,” he said, “I’ve looked at hundreds of them today. Only one ship, the Star, was in the three ports at the right times, this morning the Star left London to sail back to Georgia. I found out that the captain and two of his men, all Americans, weren’t on the ship last night, so I’m sure they killed John. When they arrive in America, they’ll get the pips and then the police will catch them!”

  • 25、

Do you want to know about my staying in America? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different between textbook English and everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I am tired.”

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused(困惑的). I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn't know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures. To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter.”

I also surprised by how hard-working. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented, I feel sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

1According to the writer, textbook English is _________ everyday English.

A.quite different from B.the same as C.easier than

2The word “tan” mean _________ in Chinese.

    A.能量 B.变白 C.晒黑

3A good US student spends his/her time ________.

    A.only in doing homework

B.on sports or music and public work

C.on studies, sports or music and public work

4Which of the following is NOT true?

A.The writer is now in US.

B.American girls love to have white skin.

    C.US students are talented.

5The best title for the passage is ________.

A.My Own Travel in the US

    B.My Opinion about the US

    C.My Studying in the US

  • 26、   One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison (监狱).The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.

At that moment, I thought to myself, "Why aren't most adults this way?" Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don't even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they're not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure (失败).

However, with kids, when they fall down, they don't consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected "falling down" with the word "failure". What's more, they probably think to themselves that it's quite okay to fall down and that it's not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they remain energetic.

I was deeply impressed by the boy's persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.

1What did the little boy do when he fell down?

A.He cried and lay on the grass. B.He asked his mother for help.

C.He got up and went on running. D.He got up and stood there crying.

2In the writer's opinion, what might the little boy regard his falling down as?

A.A failure. B.A joke. C.An interesting game. D.A learning experience.

3In the writer's opinion, why can't many adults succeed?

A.Because they are afraid of being embarrassed.

    B.Because they can't find a good excuse.

C.Because once they fail, they won't attempt again.

D.Because they don't allow themselves to make mistakes.

4The underlined word "attempt" in Paragraph 2 means ________.

    A.facing B.doubting C.trying D.giving up .

5What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Practice makes perfect. B.Failure is the mother of success.

C.All roads lead to Rome. D.Each coin has two sides.

  • 27、Some people have a very poor sense(感觉) of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. So I used to walk round in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive help-less or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If any-one ever asks me the way somewhere, I always say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work, I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary (秘书) showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!

1】The writer always refuses to give people directions because _________.

    A. she’s a stranger to the city

    B. she doesn’t know the people

    C. she has no time to help others

    D. she’s afraid of giving wrong direction

2】A man stopped the writer on the way to _________.

    A. sell her something   B. ask for the time

    C. make friends with her D. ask for the direction

3】The Friendship Building is the place where the writer _________.

    A. lives B. studies C. works D. teaches

4】The word “embarrassed” in the last paragraph means “_________”.

    A. 尴尬   B. 困惑   C. 激动 D. 拮据

5】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The writer is too shy to help others.

    B. The writer has a very poor sense of direction.

    C. The writer never got lost when she was young.

    D. The man was quite nervous.
