Joy began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. He had one.
It started when one boy laughed at him. He asked his mother, “Why am I different?”
“He actually told us he was mad for making him that way,” his mother Lewis says. How could she provide answers to her son’s question when she’d never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home and turned on the TV to a news story about a fourteen-year-old boy, Jim. He had become famous after posting videos of his dunks (扣篮), and like Joy, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Joy in. He was riveted, watching dunks again and again.
At the time, it seemed that watching Jim would simply be an exciting moment for Joy. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a friend had already asked the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Jim to build Joy’s confidence.
The boys met at Washington Middle School a couple of months later. Jim talked about their left arms. He told Joy that the way he was made was perfect. He wouldn’t let anyone discourage him and no words would shake his confidence.
Since that meeting, Lewis has seen a great difference in her son. He recently started wrestling (摔跤运动) and loved it. The meeting made Joy understand that there are others like him.
As for Jim, his relationship with Joy made him look forward to helping more kids.
