  • 24、As we know, there are differences between Western cultures and our Chinese culture. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let’s look at the words about animals and plants.

Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog” “a mad dog” “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative (消极的) meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive (积极的) actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person’s serious illness, they may say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very tired.

However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is cruel (冷酷的). There are many other examples of how “cat” is used differently as well.

The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some western countries. People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.

  • 26、My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his CF & thr 3:-@ kids FTF ILNY, its gr8.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can't, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation" of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it's great.

Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破坏)the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes cxan be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).

Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. "People get better at writing by writing," he says, "Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents."

Linguist James Millroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today's teenagers become tomorrow's parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted"; they simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia McVey says, "I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future."

Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, "I wouldn't use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun"

【1】What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

    A. To give an example of a foreign language.

    B. To show an example of creative methods.

    C. To express worries about using Netspeak.

    D. To lead in the topic of Netspeak.

【2】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A. Cynthia McVey points out teenagers can deal with Netspeak properly.

    B. Geoffrey Nunberg believes Netspeakers can write Standard English.

    C. David Crystal thinks Netspeak helps develop the habit of writing.

    D. James Milroy says that language is changing and improving.

【3】The expression "bet your bottom dollar" in Paragraph 5 means ______.

    A. be fairly sure   B. be greatly surprised

    C. think it a pity D. find it interesting

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

  • 27、A 19-meter sperm whale (抹香鲸) was saved from the beaches of Xiangshan county in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, on April 20 after becoming beached (搁浅的) during low tide (潮汐). This is one of hundreds of whales washed up on beaches around the world every year. Why do whales become stranded?

    Sickness and injury

“Quite often animals that turn up on a beach are getting tired and exhausted. They’re malnourished (营养不良的) and unhealthy, or they haven’t eaten because they’re ill,”   Simon Ingram, a professor at the University of Plymouth in the UK, told the BBC. “They can be in the final stages of being ill or die at sea and end up getting washed up on a beach.”

“Yet sickness or injury mainly plays a part when a single animal is found stranded,” Ingram added.

    Group effect

Whales are sociable animals. They travel together in groups, often following a leader and are known to gather around injured or painful whales. When one member of the group is sick or in trouble, its painful calls can cause the other members to follow it to the beach, Kris Carlyon, an Australian marine (海洋的) scientist, told Reuters. This may explain group strandings, as whales in pain could change the direction of other whales that then become lost and confused.

    Depth

Whales’ echolocation (回声定位) ability is designed for deep water. Some areas near the coast are not deep enough for whales to navigate. If animals don’t notice that they’re moving into shallower waters, it can cause trouble when the tide turns. “The water simply drops away,” Daren Grover, the general manager of an environmental organization in New Zealand, told National Geographic. “They’re left high and dry.”

    Other human activities

Fishing, pollution, ship strikes and more are responsible for many of the injuries that lead to strandings. Overfishing also causes the lack of whales’ main sources of food. This leads them to take risks to look for food in coastal or tidal waters.

If you see a beached whale, do not try to move it, as this may harm the animal. While waiting for help, keep the animal upright, wet. Avoid getting water in its blowhole (喷气孔), and cover it to prevent sunburn.

【1】What does the underlined word “stranded” mean in Paragraph 1?

    A.In sadness.

    B.In excitement.

    C.In loneliness.

    D.In danger.

【2】Which of the following can be the best subtitle for the last paragraph?

    A.More possible reasons

    B.Importance of saving in time

    C.Helping beached whales

    D.Looking for whales in danger

【3】How many reasons for beached whales are mentioned in the passage?

    A.3

    B.4

    C.5

    D.6

【4】Why is the beached sperm whale in Xiangshan county mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To lead in the topic of the passage.

B.To call for saving animals in danger.

C.To attract readers’ attention to the whale in Xiangshan.

D.To explain the serious problems whales face nowadays.
